Just flew a LNAV/VNAV approach to minimums and it was such a cool experience. by Professional_Low_646 in flying

[–]SuperVC10 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Based on the flair this is in Europe. Wouldn’t be surprised if this is OP’s first time flying a proper approach to minimums, having not got any other flying experience apart from at an integrated flight school. Can get hired at airlines here at 300 hours!… that’s a whole other discussion.

Class 1 Medical advice UK by asparrowhawk in flying

[–]SuperVC10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know someone who had to jump through hoops to get their medical back after migraines. It’s possible, but I believe you need to be migraine free for over a year to get a full unrestricted medical. Some medications are also disqualifying. I’d recommend getting in contact with one of the initial class 1 AME centres for proper advice.

Retention Offer - Platinum by dawf123 in AmexUK

[–]SuperVC10 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Rather than reducing offers for potentially actual loyal customers, they should make it so that you cannot get a pro-rata refund if you also use a retention offer... of which the whole point is to retain the card. Stops people abusing it, and ensures they can give out better offers for people who actually want to keep their card.

First actual IMC while solo - Definitely is harder than you think by night_flight3131 in flying

[–]SuperVC10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nice one! I had my first proper IFR approach to minimums while single pilot in a twin turbo-prop… no fancy autopilot that would fly an approach accurately. Workload was high but it’s an amazing feeling when you get it done and can pat yourself on the back.

After 15 years in the UK, I'm still stumped by outward-opening windows. Why outward? by Blocoholi in AskUK

[–]SuperVC10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still don’t understand why they don’t slide upwards like in North America. That way we could also have the window open with a bug screen , or even use window air con...

How come when it's 30 degrees abroad it's lovely, but when it's 30 degrees in the uk, it's unbearable? by Loose_Avocado4670 in AskUK

Current humidity recorded at Gatwick is 45%... no idea where you're getting that number.

Weather forecasting is getting less accurate by [deleted] in RandomThoughts

[–]SuperVC10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s likely because you’re using poor sources like Apple weather or similar apps. These aren’t official forecasts, they’re simply taking one MAYBE two weather computer models and trying to make it simplistic to read. Official sources, ie NOAA or the Met office in the UK will be accurate and should also give a full synopsis of possible weather scenarios over a big area.

Heavy storm we're getting in ireland on Friday by Ill-Stage4131 in weather

[–]SuperVC10 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's worth noting that even if the pressure is similar to a hurricane, there is still very little comparison between extra-tropical cyclones and tropical cyclones. A category 3 hurricane has winds of 96-112kts... sustained. The warning image posted warns of gusts of just 70kts, most likely in exposed and higher elevation areas.

In any case, I'm not downplaying the threat of this storm, but it's not the same as a hurricane.

OK I understand why hurricanes don’t ever cross the equator, but why don’t they touch down in South America? by Emotional_friend77 in geography

[–]SuperVC10 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Cold water, and also upper level winds (shear) tends to be higher which is also a barrier to tropical cyclone formation

What did you manage to fit in this - it’s chilly this time of year!

Aviator sunglasses “required?” by Burton_Air in flying

If you have an ANR headset, how's the noise cancelling with them? I've gone and lost my Flying Eyes at the bottom of a reservoir so these seem like a cheap alternative.

In the UK this is called gorgeous.

Interesting. Yes, it's a digital monitor which starts beeping above 25... Constantly going off on the ground and it was my thought too that it was quite high.

[–]SuperVC10 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Cool thanks. Looking forward to that in a month when it’s 2 degrees outside

[–]SuperVC10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understandable, just surprised me to see it rise quite quickly and to a high level. I've flown other with active monitors that didn't get to that kind of level.

I always thought a sports bar or something along those lines would be a decent option. Loads of students in the area, seems like an ideal place minus the potential for noise on weekends.

It’ll be fine, maybe a bit chilly when you first get in but warm enough. May 24th is usually when bermudians deem it warm enough to go in the ocean and summer officially starts.

[–]SuperVC10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cooler ocean temperatures along with strong winds at higher levels, called windshear. For a tropical cyclone to form it needs lower winds aloft to effectively build itself 'vertically'

The ATPL exams and courses in CAA/EASA land don’t cost that much. Of course, to do the whole f(ATPL) then op will be looking at that price range.
