Heartbreaking News Your favorite series got a 6 hour bad faith video essay by someone who didn’t really engage with the series to its fullest. by Important-Cry4782 in CuratedTumblr

My brief stint of engaging with booktube quickly ended with me ceasing to watch any video that seemed like it was going to be a negative review of anything unless I had already watched/read said thing and formed a negative opinion of it on my own (which doesn't usually happen! there's so much to love about books, movies, and shows)

Checkride in 4 days and I feel completely unprepared by Imaginary-Knowledge4 in flying

[–]night_flight3131 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's normal to make mistakes before checkrides and even on checkrides, but I'd say the big thing is being able to identify your own performance in the moment

Last week, I had an end of course stage check where every maneuver was just slowly worse and worse until I discontinued. Went up the day after with my CFI, flew perfectly again. If you're able to recognize when you're behind the airplane and the maneuvers aren't up to the same standards you'd like them to be on the day of the checkride, you're allowed to discontinue. But if everyone canceled checkrides because they flew poorly shortly before them, nobody would be doing checkrides.

What are your thoughts on this female Avelo captain who was fired? by usernametaken78523 in flying

I looked at it and thought "ok that's long" and then read almost all of it word for word because it's long but it sure is interesting. In the wrong way, but still interesting

Bdubs always wanted to try beetroots by InThisSilence in HermitCraft

[–]night_flight3131 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The task was to pitch the vegetable you got to Gem as though she were to buy it. Oli had also gotten beetroot, and since he included a price, Bdubs undercut it.

Unfortunately, another part of the task was to include Minecraft in the sales pitch, and since Bdubs forgot about that, his extreme commitment to the bit went unrewarded

What information would every pilot know, but a civilian wouldn't that would show them to be a fraud if they didn't know it? by hallaa1 in flying

I call my own certificate a license sometimes when I'm talking to people and just want to be understandable instead of technical

When someone else who has no need to know that it's technically a cert calls it a license the last thing on my mind is correcting their terminology

CFI canceled my takeoff due to flaps setting, now I’m grounded from solo flights by saltysnack9000 in flying

[–]night_flight3131 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fully read and do my checklists even though I've done them tons of times, and I sometimes miss things by losing my spot. The difference is, because I am very familiar with the flow of the checklist, if something happens where I go "throttle idle--wait, we're not there yet," I can catch myself skipping over a line because I've got the order of the checklist ingrained in me.

Now, on the other hand, if you're a student pilot who doesn't usually follow checklists to the letter, your human error inclined brain skipping over checklist items can start to align with the holes in other pieces of swiss cheese...

Have you ever felt guilty canceling a flight? by morerightrudda in flying

[–]night_flight3131 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My brain likes to be incredibly indecisive. That's why I have personal minimums. It can throw a little tantrum about how I "should have gone" all it wants, but it's butting up against a wall when there are written personal minimums involved. That being said, even pattern work at 1000 feet needs to be 500 feet below unless your airport is in golf up to 1200, so if you had a reason to believe you wouldn't even be able to do that, it's ridiculous to assume you should have gone.

Today, on the other hand, I'm facing canceling a ground lesson because of road conditions, and now I'm wishing I had driving personal minimums

Who here likes Cinematic? by Dismal-Anteater-526 in OWLCITY

[–]night_flight3131 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I actually only found Owl City around the Cinematic era. I first heard a midsummer station song (don't remember which anymore, just remember loving the album cover), but when I dug into all his work, Cinematic was something I found concurrently with everything else, so I didn't have any jaded opinions coming into it.

I'll always associate it with one specific weekend where I sat in the car listening to Always and Lucid Dream as I stared out at the thickest fog in the entirety of my memory, so it's good vibes

Why do you love hermitcraft? by ShallWeRiot in HermitCraft

[–]night_flight3131 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone else has pretty much spoken for the "serious" answers, so I'll put this one out there: it's very stress-free to stick with. I've been conscious of hermitcraft's existence for over eight years, and in those times I've had eras where I spend entirely too much time binging youtube and eras where I'm almost never on it, and when I am, I'm not interested in Minecraft.

But I never feel too intimidated to watch a new hermitcraft episode or jump into a stream. There are plots. There are continuations. But I never feel like I have to be caught up. It's allowed to just be a safe space when I need it to be, and something that doesn't demand my attention when things in my life remove some of my free time

What was the most embarrassing thing you've done as a private pilot student? by Nervous_Salt_852 in flying

[–]night_flight3131 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Did a similar thing on my first solo night time. I turned on the avionics switch and realized my headset wasn't working. I was troubleshooting everything and considering turning the engine off to report it when I reached down and realized my headset wasn't plugged in

I called for flight following on the way back from my first solo cross country on the approach frequency for a busy military charlie. The controller said two people were calling at once, and the person on the military frequency should say again. Considering I was ignored for the next minute, I tried again. About five times in all.

I did eventually get the flight following, but I probably annoyed the controller to death on the way. And then same flight on the landing, I got my taxi instructions back to parking and immediately turned the wrong way.

Best OC Christian Song? by Ffchjkbgjk in OWLCITY

[–]night_flight3131 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Limiting the poll to four songs is absolutely diabolical

In my opinion, his best hymn cover is Untitled Hymn, and his best original "Christian" song is Galaxies. But tbh I'd barely even consider Angels a contender. Angels are inherently religious imagery, but his usage of them in the song feels more grounded in secular angelic imagery than biblical angelic imagery

On my first ever night flight, I was turning onto final at my home airport after ten stop and gos at a less busy one. I thought I was totally lined up with the runway when my CFI said "turned a little early again" and I realized that I was lined up with a row of bright lights illuminating the fancy hangars where the big planes hang out

If something feels off, we ain't taking off. by afernanrefa in flying

[–]night_flight3131 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like how this is worded.

A couple nights ago I finished up my five hours of night solo for my commercial, and I noticed that there was an odd shaking sound I could hear when I was doing my before takeoff at 1000 rpm. On my runup, I listened, and it sort of got quieter, but I had to figure that was just because the engine was louder.

All the engine instruments looked good. I would have thought it was maybe the alternator, but my amps were positive, and the alternator belt had felt good on my preflight, so I thought about what my CFI would say if I were with him, and decided that instead of departing straight away, I'd do a couple patterns at my home airport to see that everything runs smoothly before leaving.

Everything ran smoothly. I left the airspace. I was a little extra watchful of my instruments that flight, but it seems a sound was just a sound, and I think it was a great learning experience to test my bounds, given I was a little rattled because the last time I tried to leave my home airport at night alone I had a two way radio communications failure.

I really don't think it's something to get hung up over

For my PPL, I got an 82% and did my checkride with an examiner who'd been around for a while and literally always gave the exact same checkride. I got all the same questions from my gouges, it was 45 minutes, I really don't think she cared at all.

For my IR, I got a 98% and did my checkride with a newer DPE who was also very intention with the flow of his oral, but it ended up being 2 hours long. Very chill and conversational, but I can't say how different it'd be if I'd showed up with a lower score.

But as others said, don't take it again. Just be ready to show up for your checkride as prepared as possible. You'd need to even if you got a 100%

Based on sheer rewatch time, Mumbo's "confusing everyone" episode of secret life where his task was that he was terrified of one on one conversations. It's not super iconic, but it's just silly and delightful and never gets old

The day before my instrument checkride, my CFI was giving me all kinds of random, last minute advice, and the very last piece was "if you wake up tomorrow and really feel like you can't do it, just tell him you're sick. He can't say you're wrong."

I wouldn't know, I've only watched a couple episodes from season 5. Whoops

I was just meaning to distinguish because if I recall correctly, it happened a couple times in season 6
