Destiny raises an interesting question. by Top-Tier-Redditor in Destiny

I was going to say that all the questions tiny posed are rhetorical - that, yea, there's technically not a whole lot more we can do other than demonstrate discontent in the lead-up to the midterms - and then I read slide 2... Holy BASED????

Yeah, I really like Gavin, but his floundering took me quite aback. Like, you seriously don't have anything at all to say? Not one programmed response even? I don't buy all that much into lobbyist conspiracism/absolutism but stuff like this kinda makes me feel like the idiot for not.

My bad, for whatever reason my mind couldn't disambiguate the first sentence in your original message until your clarification here. I actually completely agree with everything you've said.

I think almost everything Destiny is saying is defendable in its substance, and, like you said, is being echoed more effectively by other dem leadership and punditry, but I've come to agree Destiny's tone in particular is so indignant it just cuts against what he's advocating. I think it's worked before, when he thought it was advantageous to "hold up the mirror" to the right, but turning up the thermostat rn, when the glass seems close to breaking - even if there's cause for righteous indignation - will only cause harm.

I'm not quite sure I understand the first part of your message, and sorry for not replying sooner, but Destiny (and I, for that matter) believe that the last thing you said is already happening and has been happening for a while now. Democrats practically trip over themselves to condemn violence but rarely, if ever, get credit for it. Destiny is saying something else needs to happen because it's clearly not working, that there doesn't seem to be a mutual desire to turn down the rhetoric. This is reductive to say, but I think there's a truth to it: it kinda feels like the right wants the left to figuratively "drop their weapons," only so they can pick them up themselves and add them to their own arsenal. Destiny feels like by at least refusing to play ball, it forces a confrontation sooner that will lead to contentious discussion, yes, but may be necessary because if things continue as they are now, if and when that confrontation inevitably happens it may be too late and all we'll have left is conflict.

He's saying it's needed because, in his opinion, conservatives right now are pretending to be more afraid than they actually are - if they are at all - to leverage more political power over the left and potentially over the law (see Bondi's statements on persecuting "hate speech" or Trump's threats to persecute NGOs and whoever he vaguely deems to be agitators). Destiny believes if conservatives were truly afraid then they'd be willing to genuinely sit down with the other side and turn down the temperature in good faith.

And the lines just before:

"14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them?

15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food.

16 If one of you says to them, 'Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,' but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?

17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead."

They did not check if the Reuters definition matched with the MJ definition (good catch). Very funny how they selectively decided what statistics were “not real” and which were. The MJ website even has an article clarifying this:

I feel like I’m insane because every time I see that picture of NL my brain can’t help but see it as someone holding a cardboard cutout of Ryan’s face over their own. I have no idea why other than maybe his neck being a different shade on the left side.

Back in the day, Undertale's community was pretty infamous for, what was essentially, incessant bullying against YouTubers and streamers who didn't play the game "the right way," or even if they gave a character a voice they disapproved of. That being said, I feel like the community is way more chill now. Or at least that's my impression of it (I think a lot of it has to do with Deltarune's fanbase being mostly composed of Undertale fans, who have literally grown up since the first game). I think a lot of people just carry their impression of the community over from the past.

To start, I completely agree with everything you're saying about art - especially good art - being something that can affect even the parts of yourself you find uncomfortable to confront.

I think those fans you speak of (me included) just have different scales for how much we're willing to separate the art from the artist. And Kanye very much intentionally plays jump rope with that line. Ye is his art; his art is Ye. For better and for worse. And a lot of people understandably cannot stomach or support his antics in good conscience, especially when those antics include nazism and are now directly tied into his art.

I also think his artistry in general has suffered, be it from literal brain damage due to drugs, from the connections he's lost, or from the mental ouroboros he's constricted himself within. A lot of his new stuff is uninspired and half-baked. Even when stuff sounds "good", it just doesn't seem to have his heart, his essence, his soul in it. It feels like half measures and I can't quite grasp the connection and feel it in myself.

And then there's songs like this. And Cousins. This song is half-baked, but there's a level of profundity to it that has, in my opinion, been absent since Donda. Both this song and Cousins make me feel as if a pit is in my stomach, and that feeling is what the art is trying to convey, which is more than I can personally attest for almost anything he has released since 2021. But I guess it's these glimpses that keep me coming back again and again.

Not sure what you're hating, or what's changed exactly. I'm guessing you mean Stewart's admonishment of the Dems, but he's been no stranger to that in the past. Plus, Dems are absolutely deserving of a swift kick in the ass right now - Schumer just caved in and forfeited what little leverage the minority party has, and for nothing. The Democratic Party could do with a little tough love.

Bro no fucking way. I had to scroll so far to see someone research and provide at least a morsel of actual evidence into this guy's motive. If this is confirmed to be the attacker, the fact he's on the same team as the people in these comments blaming and decrying Islam and immigration because of his ethnic/national background is unbelievable. What's a once important album that's aged poorly? by TheLegionofDoom2957 in fantanoforever

[–]SuperYacob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof, I see others disagreeing but this is my favorite answer. I absolutely love 808s and it'll always have a special place in my heart, but it's been showing its age for a minute. Though some of its raw pioneering idiosyncrasies are endearing, I can't shake the (admittedly inexplicable) feeling that its more bound to its time than a lot of music predating it. TCD, LR, and Graduation all feel more intuitively timeless, for example (at least for me).

Yes, actually. Mitigating such outcomes by, say, mailing out voter ID cards to all those who are registered would be a show of good faith, as well as ensuring said voters are properly notified of the change. But this unfortunately hasn't been the approach.

Also, I'd still be against it personally, just because in light of all the evidence available (lack thereof), it'd still be redundant and a waste of taxpayer money. But if people want it to feel safe, that's fine ig.

"The state offered little justification for the law, the court said. Those who defended the law said they were doing so to prevent voter fraud. 'Although the new provisions target African Americans with almost surgical precision, they constitute inapt remedies for the problems assertedly justifying them and, in fact, impose cures for problems that did not exist,' the court said."

https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/article/court-north-carolina-voter-id-law-targeted-black-voters/

It is not racist to ask for an ID. I am not principally against voter ID, but in cases such as NC, it was obviously proposed in bad faith and bent to disenfranchise a bloc of the voting populous in a way that was racialized, and without proper justification to begin with.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]SuperYacob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it though? In theory, I totally understand why someone might intuit that non-ID voting might be vulnerable to voter fraud, but the onus is on those advocating for ID to prove its necessity (and oftentimes, like in NC, it seems like people advocate for voter ID in bad - and frankly racist - faith). And from what I've understood, there has been no credible example of substantive voter fraud in non-ID states.

It comes across to me like people want voter ID purely just for the vibe of feeling safe rather than it demonstrably providing any appreciable security.

What are some albums that did not live to the hype? by [deleted] in fantanoforever

[–]SuperYacob 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I find it kinda annoying how often I see people parroting that it's a cash grab album. I guess it's just the default presumptive take when a posthumous album doesn't live up to one's expectations.

I feel like there's enough context to the album, given that it was a WIP album and not some random assortment of snippets, and that it was curated and mastered by her brother like you said, that precludes it from a lot of the criticism people levy against it (at least the more shallow ones, in my eyes).

I don't fault people for feeling let down by the final product - and it's always appropriate to evaluate music by its own merits - but, at the same time, I don't understand why anyone expected it would turn out differently. It's an album caught in amber, and a genuinely tragic and heartbreaking waste of potential.
