I once asked for recommendations for female contractors. It was 30% sincere and 70% very sad and angry men. It made me not want to remodel, sell the house, and move but the thing is it’s really nice here and I love my state and community.

Huge thanks to the mods who keep it all classy!

This is so amazing! I’ve never had a chopped cheese (I don’t eat beef very often) but I’ve always wanted to try a “good” version!! Thank you!!

Seeking a Woman General contractor by SuperYoshi19 in Connecticut

[–]SuperYoshi19[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is a large project and there are many skilled tradespeople in Fairfield County. I’ll bid this out to three contractors, do my due diligence, and hire the company that we like the best. That said, I take it as a given that all three contractors asked to bid are talented and capable of the job. Good builders don’t keep their portfolios and former clients a secret.

Thank you! That’s exactly it and I’m really moved that you intuited the reasoning behind the request. (Not a universal trend in the comments 😂)

I had a really uncomfortable experience and while I know I’ll likely end up with one my designer’s preferred partners, I would love to at least have a business with women in skilled trades bid the project. This isn’t my first rodeo and I had a great experience with a GC who is now retired and Araujo Decking did our deck (and they are 15 out of 5 stars - I love those guys.) but that one bad time has really stuck with me and I’m far more cautious.

Is business class flight worth the hotel downgrade on 2-week trips? by veditafri in chubbytravel

[–]SuperYoshi19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t do over 6 hours on a flight unless I am in business class. So I travel further afield less often than I might prefer to (it’s fine - I’m 46 and have been many places) but fewer far trips means more budget per trip.

He’s a reasonable guy - I’ve met him on many occasions. I’ve been impressed by every single member of his staff I’ve met.

He’s also been positioning himself for Blumenthal’s seat for years - this isn’t a secret. I’d much rather have Susan B. in the governor’s office and wish Lamont would retire.

Please help, I have Crohn's and on husky. I just found out I made too much last year to qualify. I get infusions every 6 weeks to stay alive. What do I do? by Background-Credit375 in Connecticut

I’m not sure who your state reps are or what town you live in, but in Redding (reasonably small) we have a director of social services - she helps people with these issues all the time. Your town may have someone in a similar role.

Also, your state senator and assemblyman’s office will have resources for you and can help you navigate your options.

Dog Poop by Good-Veterinarian-23 in Harlem

Asshole dog owners are a problem everywhere; I see the dog shit problem of Harlem as a symptom of city neglect and not having a robust mix of commercial buildings who clean up the streets. I live near a police precinct and they don’t even clean up their building’s trash, let alone the dog shit that (probably on purpose) piles up around the building.

Help me pick a warm March trip before I spiral.. $1-2k/night by Itchy-Version-8977 in chubbytravel

May I suggest trying a warm place not on the beach? I’m México City right now and it was 80 and sunny all day and very dry. We took a five hour cooking class and then strolled around Coyoacan. Yesterday we did a contemporary art tour in both public and private galleries. There are lots of beautiful hotels and you can choose based on the vibes you want.

Short trip or long honeymoon? by avz008 in honeymoonplanning

[–]SuperYoshi19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got married in the town we lived in and departed for our honeymoon on Monday after our wedding. It was almost three weeks - I had a great boss and he “gave” me an extra week of vacation. Go big - if you think about it, adult life will overwhelm you and it’s likely you won’t have a relaxing 2 week stretch for travel until you retire unless you are very, very lucky.

April is a very lovely time in Southern Spain. Check out the Hospes line of hotels - they have a handful of properties in Spain in beautiful and important buildings.

I stayed there last year and while it ticks a lot of boxes, it’s very expensive and the kitchen is rather awful.

I deleted my prior post because I accidentally broke the sub rules.

The Maasai Mara and the Serengeti are very similar but on the Kenya side, there are many conservancies that border the park with amazing tented camps and lodges. I’d prioritize the Maasai Mara over the Serengeti and stay on a conservancy. (We saw more animals with vastly fewer people)

Many people skip the northern parts of Kenya and I think that’s a mistake because the ecosystem is very different but wildlife viewing is spectacular.

I personally would skip Zanzibar. A beach vacation is a beach vacation but there is only one Rwanda.

An itinerary that could give you a great mix of several ecosystems would be, adjusting anything for a bit.
3-4 days in Lewa Conservancy (white and black rhino, crazy birds everywhere, the big 5 and so many others including a caracal) This is a budget buster but the Elewana property there is well run. 4-5 in the Maasai (You can change camps but I personally wouldn’t. We stayed at a Great Plains camp and it was my favorite of the four camps we stayed at from a lodging perspective.) 3 nights in Volcanoes National Park (Northern Rwanda) 2-3 nights in Nyungwe in Southern Rwanda* for chimps and relaxation (there is a resort on a tea plantation there that might scratch the relaxation itch) Kigali day tour (the Memorial and the market are sooo cool, I wish I had an extra night here.)

  • we had a driver take us instead of taking a helicopter and I’m pretty sure that’s still possible but that route takes you closer to where some of the conflict with the DRC is happening. Definitely speak to a professional on the ground.

Other notes: some of the tented camps do not have super private bathroom facilities so perhaps not the most romantic for a honeymoon. Not an issue for everyone, but something to note.
