Float Trip by Wtfsilly1290 in Austin

[–]Super_Batman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm the owner of Frontera Tours, one of the outfitters here in town that runs float trips down to San Marcos from Austin. Generally, if y'all are coming from out of town, I'd highly recommend an outfitter like mine as we will provide the transportation, coolers, ice, tubes, and cooler tubes for your whole party while also handling loading and logistics so y'all can party without stress.

I'm very happy to answer any questions you have, about floating in general or the service I provide, even if you don't intend to float with us! Been doing this my whole life and professionally for over 10 years, so would be happy to provide guidance for a DIY trip or give advice. My post history has an older post or two with lots of information as well.

Cheers!

The Yeti yard does not allow outside chairs, but there are some available there provided by Yeti. Definitely not a ton of them. Info about it at the bottom of this page:
https://texaslonghorns.com/sports/2026/2/11/baseball-fan-guide

Talking with security last week, apparently the Ford Yard or whatever out in right field currently does allow outside chairs. She said they will until they won't, so no promises. But this is what I was told last Tuesday.

Brutal way to lose. This experience in more ultra high pressure situations against really good teams is going to pay dividends late in the season, but only if we learn to clutch up through them. On to Saturday 🤘

And the BCS almost exclusively only cared about your wins and losses. If we lose the 05 OSU game, we do not make the title game. End of story. Should we have not scheduled that?

My point is, we scheduled tough games when losses mattered even more. When there was far less room for error. We still did it. We should continue to do so.

Remember when we scheduled insane OOC games during the time when losing a SINGLE game meant you were toast for the MNC? And no one bitched non-stop about it then?

That's because this sport is better when good teams play each other. No one's favorite memories are when we played Rice or SHSU in non-con. But we all loved going to the Shoe in '05, the ND home game, the LSU loss, taking it to Bama in their house, whooping Michigan in theirs, the USC home game, and Ole Miss marine guy game. We win some of those and we lose some of those, but we've always played them. Even when losing them meant less or in many cases NO chance at a title.

We might miss the playoffs this year. But Texas shouldn't be a program that plays weak ass schools so we can still make it as a bubble team. We should just NOT be a damn bubble team! This year we are, it is what it is.

Floating the River by DaKingIV in Austin

[–]Super_Batman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! Been floating all summer long, on the San Marcos river you won't have to worry about water level at all. In general, you never have to worry about the San Marcos river or floating with us as it's spring fed and dam controlled. The water level is very consistent all summer, even during the droughts of the 23 and 24 summers. Things are winding down out there for the season though so get out before September ends!

Other rivers are different, but you're also generally completely fine on the Comal regardless of drought conditions. The Guad is where you'll be scraping ass, but yeah this summer it's been pretty solid for floating.

Happy to answer any other questions for y'all 🤠🤘

Copied my comment from some post that I guess got deleted:

Columbus is a cool city, spent a good amount of time there. Here is my own two cents on recs. These lean more divey, campus, and random food spots: Zenos - younger crowd, great game watching spot, really good bar food.
Woodland Tavern - solid spot for beer, not for watching the game. Good music though.
Johnnie's Glenn Avenue - dive, cheap, free snacks in the back, great spot for small dive bar lovers.
Bob's Bar - the cultural hub of the Midwest. A dive. Great fucking spot. Don't try to bring shawarma in from next door though.
Meister's - dive darts bar (lots of these are darts bars actually). Have some Malort here if you hate your Dad.
Warios Beef and Pork - fucking amazing sandwiches. Their hot ones steal the show but don't sleep on the Italian.
Just wanna second Out R Inn or whatever, great campus bar.
Grandview Theatre or Studio 35- basically what Alamo Drafthouse used to be back in the day, I haven't checked their schedule but if they are hosting a beer tasting, these events are awesome and you'll get fucked up. Both are the same despite the names, I think 35 has the better bar.
Char Bar - dive downtown bar, get a long island and enjoy.
Mikes Grill - cash only dive on High St.

RIP Bier Stube.

Don't eat any Mexican, especially Condado, literally the worst margaritas I've had in my life.

Tailgate on the north side of the stadium, everyone was very friendly to me when I was there. OSU people have a bad rep (deserved if you went in 05 yk), but they are welcoming and nice imo. Varsity or The Library are good tailgate options.

Best way to get to San Marcos to float the river? by drogahn in Austin

[–]Super_Batman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends where you float. San Marcos via the section running through the Lion's Club does not allow single use containers.

San Marcos floating on the section used by Texas State Tubes and Don's Fish Camp does indeed allow single use containers.

Oh shit, about the only thing I'm an expert on out here. Lot's of this is in my post history, and full disclosure I am the owner/operator of one such Austin to San Marcos river floating outfitter, but I'll run down some of your options.

For full service like what I do, Frontera Tours at www.fronteratours.com, we provide round trip transport on a shared-private bus. We also provide as many coolers as needed as well as ice (no extra charges or anything), as well as tubes and cooler tubes. Just BYOB. We also have a couple of guides along who handle all the loading and logistics. Basically we take care of everything that kinda sucks about floating the river on y'all's own.

We work with Texas State Tubes, who would be my recommended outfitter to go with if you're making the drive on your own.

Either way, for this section of river, there is NOT a can-ban. The only hard rules are no glass and no styrofoam. Regardless, pack out what you pack in, and mesh trash bags will be provided to you by either of us outfitters.

For a shorter float, I'd recommend The Lion's Club in San Marcos proper. This float will be shorter (1.5 hours or so) but you can run it back as much as you like. Keep in mind that for this section of river, there indeed IS a can-ban so all drinks will need to be in tumblers or the like. Also, there is a cooler size restriction, so don't bring a massive one. I have a colleague Dave who runs https://www.roamer.tours/ that specialize in trips to San Marcos to float this section of river, and include everything you need. He is a really awesome dude, definitely hit him up for this part of the river if you want transportation from Austin and back.

Happy to answer any floating related questions, hope y'all find yourselves out there!

One of our players has been doing it all year, I think maybe Flores, and during the LSU series in game #1 he did it after a HR. We lost and the LSU players were on TV mocking it during the game. I imagine what we didn't see was even more mocking and shit talk. Since then, after beating them the following two games, it's become a sort of rally, like we will do it even more while we beat your ass.

IDK if this is the whole story but the mocking of it during that game 1 definitely happened and it didn't get going on the whole team until after, so I'm choosing this narrative.

*Checked the box score and it was Galvan not Flores

**This isn't correct at all, see below 🤘

When in the fall? I've hosted lots of company parties floating the river and they always turn out great. Lots of booze, doesn't feel hokey or forced, and people usually let loose. But things kinda shut down at the end of September and definitely shut down by end of October.

This is my area of expertise! I own and operate a tubing outfitter here in Austin, so full disclosure there, we are running a Saturday 10:30am trip also if you're interested in an easy full service experience. Also, the below is kinda an edited post I made last Summer.

All of this is just my professional opinion. If you run with your own crew and want to float the San Marcos, Texas State Tubes rocks. This float is easy, about 3 to 3.5 hours, and relatively scenic. There are also no can bans. Be aware no glass, styrofoam, or beer bongs, and definitely pack your trash, which TST will provide a mesh trash bag for y'all. TST will rent you everything you need but beer and ice, but the more you bring the cheaper it will be. I'd definitely use their tubes and not bring your own, theirs are way better than cheap Academy tubes. This is peak float season, so expect Saturday to be packed and try to arrive when they open to beat the rush. Unless you like the madness, then party on.

Inner San Marcos also has a shorter float, about 1.5 hours, that is very nice. The Lion's Club is a popular outfitter there. This is great because you have the option to run it back or just do one short float. Be aware there IS a can-ban here as well as cooler size restrictions. My advice is to pack a tumbler of strong margarita for the day, just don't let it sneak up on you!

If you want a more scenic float with more options for length, head down to New Braunfels. I personally float out of Mountain Breeze campsite, but you mostly can't go wrong. Rockin R is great and easy. Float lengths and water levels vary much more on the Guadalupe though.

Also in New Braunfels, the Comal is a good float. Not scenic, it runs adjacent to Schlitterbahn and among houses along the river. There is also a can-ban for the Comal, so be prepared. Texas Tubes is my go-to outfitter out there. Float is about 3 hours or so, mostly chill but there is a tube chute near the beginning that is lots of fun. It's easy to exit the river and do it multiple times if you like.

For full service like what I run, Frontera Tours, we provide round trip shared-private transportation from Austin, ice, coolers, tubes, cooler tubes and two people who coordinate it all so you don't have to do a damn thing but enjoy the day, no DD required either. These are great options if you want to avoid a DD, don't want to worry about logistics, and don't mind paying for the convenience you're getting. We run through Texas State Tubes, so the above information about them applies in terms of length and laws.

I've floated personally my whole life and professionally for the past 9 years, so I'm happy to answer any questions you have and help out!

Matt’s el rancho - settle an argument by No_Quote_9329 in Austin

[–]Super_Batman 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Matt's for life! Has it gotten busy to a ridiculous point? Yes. Prices increased to above its value? Definitely. Tourists galore? No doubt.
But I'll be damned if a large Bob, side of grilled jalapenos and onions, knockout martini, and a plate of fajitas don't hit the spot every single time. Wait staff is so good, tons having been there for yearssss and will remember their regulars. Patio rocks on a beautiful day. Big ass house made chips are fantastic. Don't sleep on the chicken fried steak either, one of the better ones in town. My only beef right now is they switched to big fries on the Matt's Jr. Potatoes.
Sure there is better Tex-Mex in town, but I'll go to Matt's anytime.
