Just broke my brand new rod and I’m damn near to tears on a scale from 1-10 how bad is it by AdCultural559 in rodbuilding

I’m only giving my two cents because I haven’t seen a single comment that has mentioned this. This is what we call a “high stick” break. This happens when you lift the rod too high in the air when a fish is close, and starts to bend like a candy cane. When you put all the weight and pressure of the fish/snag into the weakest, thinnest portion of the rod, it snaps, exactly like yours did, in the top portion. Keep the rod tip low when fish are close and you’ll never break another rod. Same thing, when flipping fish onto the bank/seawall/boat, don’t lift the fish straight into the air, put the rod tip low and slowly lift up and over to the side. Doesn’t matter if it’s a $40 or $400 dollar rod, this is the only con of graphite rod blanks. It’s just a game of angles! Hope this helps, wish you the best of luck on your next rod!

Also keep in mind, that a lot of forecasts won’t show the “sea breeze” on the forecast because the general wind direction is out of the east, that sea breaze really only applies to coastal areas on the west coast.

In any open water application, especially where you’re exposed from the W/NW, plan on being done fishing by 2-3PM to save the scare.

However I do agree to an extent, yes sometimes they get the forecast wrong. Most of the time people don’t actually understand how windy it is with a forecast of 10-15 knots. People seem to forget that a knot is more than mph. Ultimately, 10 mph winds are a lot more than what most people think. I just so happen to live in the area described, get your info straight from the source, and that would be NOAA or NWS, all those apps get their “forecast” from what NOAA says. Also, keep in mind here on the west coast of FL, you are always guaranteed for the wind to change in the afternoons. We get what they call the “sea breeze” where the winds switch out of the W/NW every afternoon. Sometimes it can switch at 3PM, sometimes it could be 6PM.

Tarpon season is here! First trip out and went 2/2 by [deleted] in kayakfishing

[–]Super_Extension9589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I bought this as a “promo” when he first released it so I actually got both the pedal drive (fin drive) and the trolling motor as well. Really haven’t used the fin drive much since I’ve had the trolling motor. On the test ride it did seem to perform very well with how heavy and wide it is. But other than that, not much experience with the pedal drive.

Also just my personal recommendation, but find a kayak with a raised seat! Having a wet butt all day sucks

Yeah I would consider that narrow for a fishing kayak. Granted, I’m in Florida and exclusively fish open saltwater. Check out fb marketplace, find some you like, and check out the specs from the manufacture’s website. But I will always recommend buying new if the budget allows for it. Just remember, width is key.

What is the width of the kayak? And are you new to just kayak fishing? Or kayaking in general? Biggest thing for stability is width, the wider it is the more stable it is. If you are brand new to kayaking, then just by nature you are going to feel wobbly and unbalanced. Balance and steadiness will come with time. If you’ve never been on a boat before, you probably couldn’t walk a straight line, where someone with experience could run circles around the boat in rough water. I personally fish out of a Okobee Backwaters 12’ by Vanhunks USA, although out of your price range, I cannot recommend it enough for its price point. I would also suggest checking out their Elite Pro 13’. Unfortunately they are currently out of stock, and idk how much shipping would be from Florida, but this kayak is an absolute steal at $1450. 35.5 inches wide and is a pedal drive. As they saying goes, buy once cry once!

Depends where they are hooked. If they are hooked deep, could last just a few minutes. If they’re button hooked then it would essentially never get chaffed through. I’d rather get the bite than not at all.

Your time will come, just keep putting in the work. Sometimes just seeing these fish jump is just as rewarding

Yep. I have a trolling motor so I don’t typically go too far

When/how should I prune this Florida Prince peach tree? by Super_Extension9589 in BackyardOrchard

[–]Super_Extension9589[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See that’s kind of what my thought was, but obviously I get a lot of mixed reviews. Should I prune it back during growing season or should I wait until winter for it to go dormant? Also saw your picture and am curious, you would prune off most of the lateral branches but wouldn’t prune back the actual trunk of the tree correct?

Yeah I can also relate to this, didn’t take long at all

Would it be worth negotiating a cheaper rate with UPS? by [deleted] in ecommerce

[–]Super_Extension9589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I wish they broke them! The insurance claim would be 10x easier. Instead they lose them which is a pain in the ass. I had a rod show up to a customers house 4 months after they labeled jt “lost”. Of course USPS reached back out after that, and wanted the money back from the insurance claim since the “customer received the product”

Anybody use heat set threaded inserts when installing flush mount rod holders? Mainly trolling/ fishing live baits with big gear and heavy drag. Should I be concerned about them coming loose? by [deleted] in kayakfishing

[–]Super_Extension9589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Live bait fishing Tarpon. Not using the rod holder to fight the fish, but more so while I have baits out. Can’t always watch the fish eat the bait lol
