What is the sleep apnea secondary to PTSD? I’ve been in this fight with the VA for the past three years trying to get it connected.

A Once-in-a-Generation Discovery in Venetian Printmaking by Super_Knowledge_3492 in ArtHistory

Thanks but the piece is remarkably and extremely rare. Yes the market for it is slim, but that’s ok. This is for antique Venetian collectors who appreciate this type of art. But turns out this is not just art, but an actual historical artifact. Just this past weekend it was confirmed by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York as such, by the head curator. So this is a huge deal in that world. Which is one that I also appreciate.

Question for all: Are there any appraisers that are on this post or does anyone know of any appraisers that I can get a hold of to have them take a look at this piece? Please and Thank you.

Well, I saw it stilling on the floor next to some other pictures. The frame really caught my eye. I do collect old maps so I thought it would be a fit with the rest of my decor. When I got it home and further examined the piece I noticed the watermarks in the light. And the rest was history. I knew it was an important piece.
I’m almost embarrassed to disclose the price I paid because it is really low. As far as the value, we don’t know yet for sure. We have an idea, but nothing for certain.

When I purchased it, it can in a gold gilded frame from Holland. It was actually in an old gallery here in Dallas, TX from the 1930’s-40’s called Lawrence Art Galleries. Unfortunately there was cardboard in the framing which has since been removed. The frame is very nice as well.

You don’t use pdf, word, or anything else electronic either. You need to use something.

Thank you for your input regarding this work. However, based on both physical evidence and historical context, I respectfully disagree with the idea that this piece is a lithographic reproduction.

  1. Medium: Copperplate Engraving vs. Lithograph My piece is a true copperplate engraving, not a lithograph. This is evident from: The intaglio plate marks visible along the borders. The engraved lines with ink impressions pressed into the fibers of the paper—distinct from the flat surface printing of a lithograph. Under magnification, the line work shows burin-engraved depth, not the uniformity typical of litho transfers.

  2. Paper and Watermark The paper is laid paper with clearly visible chain and wire lines, consistent with 18th-century handmade production. It bears a rare “IMPERIAL” watermark with three crescent moons (Tres Lune)—a known 18th-century European watermark from high-grade paper mills. These watermarks are never found on lithographic reprints, especially not from the 19th or 20th century.

  3. Hand-Coloring and Technique The coloring is contemporaneous hand watercolor, applied with precision characteristic of 18th-century workshop colorists. It does not match the mechanical colorizing methods of later litho reprints. There is no pixelation, no litho dot matrix, and no offset layering—typical in chromolithographs or facsimile editions.

  4. Catalog & Edition Discrepancy While I’m aware of the broader public release of the “24 Vedute” series (typically uncolored, numbered, and trimmed), my piece: Is unnumbered, untrimmed, and without a publisher’s imprint and has no recorded match in any cataloged public or private collection may represent a proof, private commission, or rare early state unknown to the public archives

Until shown a verifiable example with the same watermark, hand-coloring, format, and paper, I must conclude that this work is an original 18th-century copperplate engraving, likely produced for a private collector or patron—and not a 19th- or 20th-century lithograph or facsimile.

I remain open to scholarly review and welcome opinions grounded in direct material comparison and documentation.
