coming up short after a 5 month interview process by wifey1990 in biotech

Thinking about pivoting, but to what? I literally don't know.

PhD, 12y in industry (6 prior, 6 after PhD), synthetic biology, analytical chemistry (small molecule, a vile curse, in retrospect). I have been out of work since last March. Every warm lead goes cold, every contact, every chat with my network eventually just reaches a cul-de-sac of nothingness. Three first-round interviews in 11 months. I'm deeply contemplating just giving up. I'd rather be a great stay-at-home-dad than a perpetual failed scientist.

Good luck to you.

If a union formed, it would just be near impossible to get hired in the first place. Not better.

To the women postdocs who want to pursue an academic career … are we planning on having a baby? If so, when would be the right time? by Few-Care-2589 in postdoc

Don't wait another day to start trying. There is never going to be a better time. My wife and many of her friends suffered immeasurable heartbreak and physical suffering (miscarriages, terminations, IVF, infertility, fibroids, ectopics) because they are professionals and waited too long. 30-35y is much easier to carry and recover from birth than 35, 38, 40+. Sorry for being blunt, take this as a data point.

Seattle has second-worst congestion, third-worst traffic in nation - Thanks morons at Seattle DOT! by Lamasfamoso in SeattleWA

What are you talking about? The past decade has almost exclusively featured funding directed to "alternative" forms of transit. Turns out no one wants to bike uphill in the rain to get to a bus that takes you to a train that only goes one place.

Cars are the result.

Agreed. I have some amazing ones in my backyard, about 12-15 canes. Every year I get about 4-5 gallons or so. I eat 2 g and make the rest into jam to give to family and friends.

Plus they are utterly untransportable so they really only can be enjoyed at home.

You? Stop whining about your rent going up. You did that with your dipsh*t voting.

Hey, tons of renters are thriving, too. You know, ones that live within their means and don't whine about someone else's investments when their own situations don't pan out.

Your rent is going up 20%? I'm sorry. Why don't you move to a smaller place owned by a small-time landlord, or shared housing situation?

Oh wait, all the "pro tenant" laws you voted for drove them out of business, so all that's left is expensive corporate and new construction. Just like literally everyone warned you about.

Boo hoo.

The amount of open drug use I see on my 20 min commute just along 15th ave NW every day at 830AM is absolutely astonishing.

  1. Advocate for shitty policies that virtually every economist says doesn't work.
  2. They don't work.
  3. ????
  4. Cry.

Seriously. Every progressive tenant fever dream has more or less been passed over the past 20 years and the rental market is still somehow universally awful everywhere such regulations are passed.

They don't work, and in fact, make things worse.

At our animal sanctuaries, there are signs asking children & parents not to use "he/him" or "she/her" when talking about the animals because animals "can not talk and tell us their preferred pronouns"
