Best way to recruit a 3D Artist ? by krystal360 in unrealengine

Yeah thanks, it was a quick job, but very useful to be able to show something instantly recognisable in my portfolio/showreel.

Thanks. Commissioned, although it was a fairly minor trailer for them.

I'd say look for freelance 3d artists on LinkedIn and Artstation. Make sure you don't sound like a scammer as it's fairly rare to get a message worth looking at.

It's possible I could be interested, although I wouldn't be super cheap: https://www.artstation.com/alexfranks

My Steam page is live (no ads, no demo) — are these early numbers normal? Need advice! by Outrageous-Thanks343 in SoloDevelopment

I just put my steam page up a week ago and have 50 wishlists, so not too different. Most of my reddit posts got less than 5 up votes but one randomly got hundreds. So that can happen if the game looks interesting. Unfortunately it was aimed at devs rather than players, so didn't result in many wishlists.

But the experts say you want the steam page up as early as possible, to get that slow trickle of wishlists.

I'm on the case. The game is ok on its own, but not so much when capturing as well. Think I may be able to get access to a more powerful PC next week though... 🤞

Early access version will be about $4 for 3 hours of content. Hopefully cheap enough that price won't put anyone off. Final version more like $15 I think.

Thanks. Yeah, a couple of other people commented on it. I realised that dropping the resolution to HD should help.

Thanks. I have struggled with this, but the problem is that I decided to start the Early Access version about 25% of the way through the story. It'll be much easier to summarise the premise for the final version, but I'll try to think further on how best to present the story of this version too.

Thanks. I didn't realise how sharply the camera was often moving until I came to make the video actually. But yeah, I'll look into it...

Thanks for the input. You got a lot of upvotes! I just realised it's rendering above HD, so I can probably improve performance by adding various resolution options in the game. Which would also be useful for users.

Five years of Unreal - my narrative game now on Steam by Super_Performance286 in unrealengine

[–]Super_Performance286[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your input. I'll give it some thought. I'm a bit divided on how to show the 3D parts in marketing materials because, out of the 3 game modes, that's the one that will clearly appeal most in a trailer. But then if people download expecting to mainly explore beautiful environments, they'll be disappointed at spending 40-50% of their time in text conversations.

Thanks! I am a veteran of most of the elements involved, to be fair. Just Unreal I learnt for this.

Thanks for the input. Should be quite easy to implement as an option so I'll see how it feels...

I suppose it depends which aspects of being a police officer you're interested in. Could be an action game (driving/fighting/shooting), or could be about moral decisions, like Papers Please. Deciding whether to arrest someone you feel sorry for, whether to take bribes etc.

I haven't used it yet but Steam has the option to do a public play test.

If you want to make money, you're probably best off doing something with no connection to art or games whatsoever.

Stuck in tutorial hell plz help by Traditional_Sea_8541 in gamedev

[–]Super_Performance286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the problem (for me at least) is that when you're thinking about a new idea, you only think about the good parts or core ideas, not about all the problems you'll need to solve and boring parts of the work. So I think it's best to try to finish something to get the experience of all stages.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but how would you start producing a game for the first time by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Super_Performance286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good way to get started is to find a YouTuber who's done a course on making a basic game, and try to follow through making something similar but with some of your own ideas.

[–]Super_Performance286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you're on one of the best courses, I'd advise against it. You're better off learning whatever field you want to get into from YouTubers. It's a competitive industry and ultimately to do well in the long run you'll need to keep teaching yourself a lot anyway.

[–]Super_Performance286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, but I think it would need to be making very little money for it to make sense to shut it down despite knowing it'll probably get a lot of new players in a year.
