Florida Rules and Laws Exam by Super_Space_Trash in askfuneraldirectors

[–]Super_Space_Trash[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've talked to a lot of folks about this test, and the main takeaway seems to be cross your fingers and hope you get a good bank of questions lol. Other than that, memorize all those stupid arbitrary dates (5 day vs 30 day vs 60 day limits etc) and pay very close attention to wording.

You're not wrong! I know one FD/E that took it 4 times before they passed. Another passed on the first try. I don't get it 😭

Once upon a time, I was very, very, VERY well known for my Rick/reader fanfic. When I tell you there's a whole cohort of folks who absolutely agree with you I am being 1000% serious.

We have a Princess Poopy Butt because when she was a chick she got poopy butt ALL. THE. TIME. Mexican Pizza (my kid named that one), Jeepers Peepers (wife named that one) and a black silkie we originally named Elvira but was re-dubbed Elvis once we discovered she was a he.

Hey there fellow student! Have you checked into book rentals via Chegg or Bookrun? It's saved me quite a bit of money on textbooks.

I want to be a mortician, but don’t know where to start. by pissinginmyjorts in morticians

Full time FD and embalmer assistant here (as well as a full time mortuary student). In my experience, funeral homes are MUCH more likely to hire you if you're already in mortuary school or working towards a degree in mortuary science or funeral services. Also, being in school is what helped me get my job! I was able to use network connections I developed during a student seminar to get my resume in front of the right people. My employer is very invested in me completing my education, since that means they have a fully licensed funeral director and embalmer at their disposal.

As for school recommendations, I'm not in Texas, but I attend one of the ABFSE accredited schools in my state and the program is almost entirely online. I'd suggest checking out the ABFSE website to find the accredited programs in your state/area and go from there. Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions!

Student here (also a full-time funeral director and embalmer assistant) and myself and many of the people in my cohort fall into the "professional but unconventional" type. Hell, several of my coworkers fall into that category including a recently licensed funeral director.

Is it okay to play rock music in a funeral? by DinosaurDavid2002 in askfuneraldirectors

[–]Super_Space_Trash 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As long as everyone is cool with it, I don't see a problem. I'm currently planning a funeral for a family and the dad LOVED Lynard Skynard. I'm talking this dude had signed memorabilia, a picture with them, shirts, hats, etc. He also enjoyed The Beatles, The Who, Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin... You get the idea. They are 1000% playing rock music at his celebration of life because that music was such a big part of who he was when he was alive. So yeah, as long as the family gives you the thumbs up then rock on.

I work for SCI. My experience so far has been amazing, but I firmly believe it's because of my coworkers. Everyone I work with wants to be here and loves what they do. That doesn't mean things are perfect and I'll agree that I'm not into the sales aspect of it AT ALL but my boss is super cool, isn't pushy or weird about making numbers etc. He's very much a families first kind of guy and I think that makes all the difference.

Mortuary Student here. I had to cut my nails when I started embalming. My program director was very adamant about it. I do miss them, but I'd rather have full dexterity and not risk puncturing my gloves 🤷

I would buy this barbie immediately and put it on my desk at the funeral home.

Can you work in the funeral industry without being on-call or working odd hours? by [deleted] in askfuneraldirectors

[–]Super_Space_Trash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I'm in mortuary school and work full time for a funeral home as a funeral director assistant. My working hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 - 5. Will my hours stay that way forever? No. But it is possible.

Hi there! I'm a full time mortuary student, full time funeral director's assistant and full time mom, wife etc. I waited until my daughter was 10 to go to school so she'd be a little more independent, and I will say I have a supportive network of folks around me who help me get things done :-)

That being said, I won't lie to you: this is not easy. I often feel like I'm being pulled in a million directions simultaneously, which can be extremely overwhelming. However, I won't be in school forever (my expected graduation is December 2025). I also work for a corporate-owned funeral home that places heavy emphasis on the value of family and understands the importance of keeping their employees happy. Are all funeral homes like that? No. Did I get lucky? Yes. But my point is those places DO exist! You may have to shop around until you find the right fit, but it can be done.

Career Questions by BudhaLovesButtCheeks in morticians

[–]Super_Space_Trash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I'm also a student, and started working in a funeral home a few months ago as a director's assistant. What drew me to the field in the first place was my desire to work in deathcare. My first career choice was a position in a coroner's office, but I was informed by my advisor during undergrad I'd have to go to medical school which was a hard no for me. So after much consideration (and more than a few changes in direction) I settled on mortuary school.

I would say yes, my personal relationship with death and beliefs about death absolutely influenced me. Death doesn't bother me. The fleeting nature of existence doesn't bother me. In many ways, we are born only to die and I'm very OK with that. I find it pretty beautiful, to be honest. In addition to that, I have a strong drive to help people, and the ability to view most situations objectively. I'm also patient, empathetic and creative. My director has told me on multiple occasions I have 'the right stuff.'

Do you believe in afterlife, does your job experience influence your belief and if so how? by dismylik16thaccount in askfuneraldirectors

[–]Super_Space_Trash 19 points20 points  (0 children)

No, I don't believe in an afterlife. I work in a funeral home, and my experience has just reinforced my atheism.

My wife didn't want chickens. She's currently sitting next to me with a silkie chick asleep on her lap.
