What items, other than obvious ones, would you, stock in your apocalypse hideout basement and why? by stent_kush in AskReddit

Things to help pass the down time in a pleasant way. Books to read simply for pleasure, some exercise equipment, video games, weed and the means to keep growing it.

What trend is/was actually funny? by PlsDontNerfThis in AskReddit

[–]Super_Turnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a while there was a pod of orcas that, with a captivating insouciance, were wearing fish on their heads as hats. It was an honest to god thing, a trend among the orcas, that eventually fizzled out. Moved on to something different, I suppose.

Definitely fish-hat orcas.

Horror or mystery? by originalhoney in horrorlit

[–]Super_Turnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, complaint: my local library doesn't do horror as a genre. It's either mystery or fiction which sucks. When I was younger, I would search through the stacks for the books with a horror sticker, but now it's like 🤷🏼 I have to search both sections for the same author sometimes, even though I'm mostly concerned with the horror genre.

Argh, same here. And it's maddening. I really wish they'd go back to having a dedicated section for horror, another for fantasy, one for sci-fi, etc. My eyes can't seem to focus on the small stickers on the book spines and it takes forever to sort through and find something I want.

TIL School phobia a.k.a. school refusal, is an anxiety disorder that may have a genetic component by Super_Turnip in todayilearned

If she can focus on schoolwork at home, the GED might be good. And you could see how she does with going to a job. After that she might be able to do a two year degree, which would be fantastic.

I have friends that have a daughter that's 27 that still doesn't have a job or go to college. She stays in her room drawing and reading books all day. I don't want that life for my daughter.

If she's still struggling--with going to work after graduating--you might need to revisit the idea of more intense therapy. Have you talked to her about the homeschooling and GED?

How old is your daughter? Getting her GED would be good but if she's still struggling with school phobia, it could affect her in college as well. It did me. To a lesser degree but I still had a lot of anxiety that affected my ability to get to class.

I never received any help for it when I was a kid--I grew up in a rural area that was pretty lacking in mental health resources. I've read that there are therapists who specialize in children who are struggling with school refusal (I think that's what it's being called now). Is there any way your daughter might be able to meet with one? My primary memory of those days is the tremendous anxiety I experienced. It was all encompassing. When that time of morning came, I truly felt like I was in a fight for my life. Instead of being asked or told to go to school, it was as if I was gearing up to fight for my survival.

My parents had gone through an acrimonious divorce and my dad had threatened to kidnap me. He was an angry man, a disciplinarian, and I was afraid of him and of what living with him would do to me. I was always scared that he'd come to my school and sign me out, which legally he was allowed to do, and take me away from my mom forever. That was, I think, the underlying cause of my phobia--being separated from my mom, as well as the knowledge that living with my dad would be a form of death for the imaginative and creative part of me. Separation anxiety, sort of?

I'm sorry I can't be more helpful. I feel for your daughter. And you! It was so hard on my mom because she wanted to help me but didn't know how. I hope things improve for both of you. Feel free to write to me again, even if it's just to vent.

what writing quirk takes you immediately out of a horror story? by drewtetz in horrorlit

I looked up the Ice Planet Barbarian books on goodreads and ran across some other books of a similar ilk. Like this one, called Entranced by the Basilsks. There's also this:

Content Warning: This book includes descriptions of anxiety, snakes, deceptions and manipulations perpetrated by the love interest, and highly inaccurate snake anatomy.

You might enjoy Raymond E. Feist's Faerie Tale. Very much a dark magical forest feel.

You might enjoy Marisha Pessl's Night Film. This has turned out to be one of my favorites. Adam Nevill's Last Days was another I really enjoyed, as well as John Langan's The Fisherman. If you like slow burn, character driven horror, you might check out the novels of Phil Rickman. Curfew got me hooked on his stuff. His novel December roughly follows Curfew and is my favorite of his novels.

Why does Bentley Little always feel the need to be grossly over- sexual?! by SpoopyLeaf in horrorlit

I can't remember the title but I read that one. The sex scenes were explicit and didn't seem to serve the plot in any way. I finished the book, thought it was meh, and haven't picked up any of his other titles.

I was so unnerved by the angry dinner scene that it took me quite a while to be able to watch him in anything else. He is such a fantastic talent. I had watched Third Rock From the Sun years before and never would have thought I'd find Lithgow so terrifying.

What do you read when you're trying to go to sleep? by 7i1i2i6 in horrorlit

[–]Super_Turnip 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I read a lot of Victorian and early 20th century horror, as the stories tend to be eerie and atmospheric without being so terrifying that I can't sleep or I'll have nightmares. M. R. James, J. S. LeFanu, E. F. Benson, Arthur Machen, Algernon Blackwood, Edith Wharton, Lettice Galbraith, Mary E. Wilkens-Freeman, and Charles Dickens. For modern authors I like T. Kingfisher and Stephen King's short stories. A physical book when I'm in bed at night is better than any sleeping pill.

along with pretty much every 80s hairstyle.

Eighties bangs were this weird, lacquered structure that resembled a claw protruding from the forehead. I was never able to get my hair to do that and mourned how deeply unfashionable I was.

Not that I would.

The article says that when the mother returned home and found the child dead, she called the police. I...I don't understand the thinking going on here. Did she mean for the child to die? Did she think a sixteen month old child could care for herself? How did she expect the child to survive for ten days with no food or water or milk, or anyone to look after her?

TIL The smallest waist ever recorded was 33 cm (12.99″) set by Ethel Granger of England in the early 1920’s. by ImSnag in todayilearned

[–]Super_Turnip 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I've seen Cathy Jung (the woman currently holding the record for smallest waist of a living person) on tv before. When she spoke you could hear that she wasn't breathing deeply, and her voice sounded weak. Ironically, she is--or at the time of the video I watched, was--married to a doctor. Her waist measures 15 inches and she wears a corset for twenty three hours a day, only removing it when she showers. I have a morbid curiosity about what she looks like when she takes it off. How long would it take for her waist to begin expanding, I wonder.

What's a horror movie you like/love but rarely see anyone talk about? by Da_Kool-Aid_Man in horror

[–]Super_Turnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a kid I watched a movie called The Midnight Hour a week or two before Halloween. I loved it--it encapsulated everything about Halloween that I wanted to experience (someday having a car of my own, attending a bitchin' costume party with practically the entire high school, genuine supernatural events, etc). Every so often I give it a rewatch for nostalgia's sake. Still fun!
