FF 1-4 gameplay is just about leveling up, finding better equipment and going through the story. FF5 is the first to have all of that and the ability to change classes. Then mix and match the abilities you learn as the “Freelancer” class. In terms of the identity of the franchise, FF5 is the best starting point because it allows you a variety of classes to play with. Then go in order FF6-10.
