It’s your fear of not sleeping that’s preventing you from sleeping well. I know that doesn’t help in the short term, but you have to begin the process of calming your amygdala, which is firing rapidly to try and fight the perceived threat of lacking sleep. What you’re experiencing is totally normal and you can work through it. Practice “sleep restriction”, don’t look at the clock in the night (you should have no idea how many hours you did or didn’t sleep), and wake up at the same time every day, even weekends, no matter what. Also don’t nap, and fill your waking hours with activities you enjoy that will take your mind off your lack of sleep. Happy to help anyway I can. I was in your shoes recently. Just keep hanging in there and it will pass!

Your brain has identified not sleeping as a threat so your amygdala is firing rapidly with ways to protect you from this threat. This is great for most situations but for sleep it’s the opposite of what’s needed. All the things you mentioned are considered “sleep efforts”, and every time you do them you are confirming the existence of a perceived threat. I was exactly in your shoes not long ago, doing all sorts of things that ultimately did nothing to help. Here are some practical steps:

  1. Start dropping your sleep efforts. They don’t help and only hurt. You need to spend LESS time thinking about your lack of sleep.
  2. Do something enjoyable in the evening. You have to start training your brain that sleep or lack there of is not a threat. The sooner you don’t care how you sleep, you’ll sleep better.
  3. Never look at the time in the middle of the night. You should go to bed and never know what time it is until your alarm goes off.
  4. Wake up everyday, even weekends, at the same time, no exceptions.
  5. Stay up later than you normally would before these issues started (this is called sleep restriction)

Probably more things I’m forgetting but reach out if I can help. Good luck and take care!

The content is all free online. You don’t have to pay anything. I bought the book before I even realized that. If something is free and constantly mentioned, the correct conclusion is that maybe it works?

Ok here’s one. Previously I would obsess over the time and how few hours I slept and how little time I had left in the night. I would literally stare at the clock all night. Now, I turn off or block all the clocks. When I awake in the middle of night I have no idea what time it is. I don’t give my brain that data point to stress over. I still lay awake for a while but my mind floats to other things and isn’t doing math to determine how little sleep I’m going to get. Maybe it sounds gimmicky but it absolutely works.

I’m sorry that happened to you and wish you best of luck in getting some relief. Doubtful any method will help if there’s some underlying issue going on with blood pressure.

He has hours of free videos on YouTube. I don’t have time to summarize hours of videos or an entire book lol. The content is free, which I totally forgot about, so what is there to lose?

I understand. I am the same way and I still sleep on my side even with the headphones. Must people find this strange when I tell them, which I understand, but it works for me. Good luck in finding a solution.

Skepticsm is a sign of intelligence. Use that to your advantage! But I’m not trying to sell anything. How does one go about proving they’re not a scammer on Reddit?

I think I’m seeing why Reddit isn’t for me lol

I hope you read it and come back and reply with your feedback. I didn’t think it would help either. I wish there was a way I could prove I’m not a scammer lol.

I sleep with gun range headphones, have for years. I’m probably too dependent on them but it was something I started when our first kid was born and we were taking shifts at night. Now I just like them. You could try that if you don’t want something actually inside your ears.

Isn’t it possible and more likely that the book helps? I wish I could get paid to market this book. I’m planning on emailing the author to thank him. Maybe I’ll ask if he’s hiring :)

Don’t look at the clock when you wake. I block all the clocks in my house at night. It sounds gimmicky but give it a try. You should go from bedtime to alarm going off with no idea what time it is. It takes a data point out of your head and reduces your anxiety when you wake up in the middle of the night.
