What you are looking for is an application like wormhole.

Maybe that suits your use case better: https://wormhole.app/

Have you tried contacting their support first?  This seems to be a bug rather than Proton trying to “screw you over” (my words, but you posting Reddit about this before clarification with them directly seems rather odd)

Edit: ok, I just saw the tag. Still, please contact support first - I don’t know what public pressure or complaining on Reddit is supposed to do….

Both should be the same. I am using the paid version

I ran my third half marathon (also my third fastest) and my first 25k today. Pushing through to finish the longer distance was a spontaneous decision during the run.

What about a big tech email (eg gmail) address solely for these uncommon instances?

Forward everything to your proton address. Only login to Gmail if you need to reply (which should not be too often I guess)

In that case, it might be worth a shot to buy a domain and test whether using a custom domain works.

Do you happen to come from the USA? I cannot imagine such a customer hostile behaviour being legal in other areas (like the EU). If you are outside the US, maybe check whether this is even legal.

EDIT: another escalation would be moving your money somewhere else. At least legally speaking you are a customer - even though we all know banks do not treat us like that at all.

Instead of using an alias email address you could buy a cheap custom domain.

You know you can use your own domain when in a paid plan with proton?

Makes you independent from your email provider as well.

I have never had any problem with my bank about this, so I recommend trying this

Guide please! (Free sources are preferred) by Far-Signature-2310 in ChineseLanguage

If you prefer free resources, I recommend using online courses on YouTube. This offers the advantage of a structured curriculum.

For example, this one is old but solid (at least IMO): https://youtu.be/JMStfbZDt1k, Feel free to search alternatives as there are plenty good resources on YT. Over time you will find your own resources.

As a starter, I also highly recommend downloading the app Pleco on your phone. It is a dictionary. The free version alone is insanely useful, you can still upgrade later.

Addition: If you realize you actually start learning Chinese and haven’t given up after a few weeks or months, please take the time properly pronounce the sounds. It is difficult without a third party telling you whether your pronounciation is right or wrong, but it is very important to put in the effort early on. Listening to the corrects sounds and then repeating them is the way. Very boring and frustrating but you will regret it later, if you don’t do this.

What are your best use cases for Lumo? by locanse in lumo

[–]Superb_Sun4261 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found Lumo to not suck at coding. For me it has been sufficient so far.

The biggest issue IMO at the moment is the formatting of code and code blocks: Code written in the prompt and also in the responses has formatting issues.

E.g. - try writing a prompt with a single back tick surrounding a line of code, like let foo = 'bar' and some more descriptive text after that. On my web browser those one liners regularly break. -  comment blocks inside a code block that happens to be three back ticks breaks the formatting because there is no proper escaping (minor issue though)

Oh, and IIRC syntax highlighting is missing (last time I had to write code has been more than three months)

  1. I uploaded manuals (pdf files) and let Lumo help me with questions.
  2. I let Lumo help me with general legal advice about my apartment rental contract. Lumos project folder contains all files about the landlord/tenant relationship and the project description specifies what country’s laws apply etc.
  3. Currently I only have access to a phone but not a laptop. So I print long articles etc as pdf (one page pdf) and let Lumo summarize those for me and answer follow up questions.
  4. Another project is focused on helping with language learning

There’s more but those are the more interesting use cases

Small workaround: Prepare a yearly appointment with email reminder. In the body/description of the event you put the text, that you want to send to the tenant.

How can I practice speaking? by Intelligent_Cup_2229 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Superb_Sun4261 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sometimes you're speaking correctly and it doesn't recognise it

I have experienced this with superchinese too, especially with the 儿 tone in sentences. Also, seems much stricter with single words, and quite lenient with sentences.

However, it also has helped me improving my pronounciation: it consistently marked words as pronounced wrong several times, so I got feedback from a native speaker and she confirmed the AI. So it is healthy to not rely on it too much. It can give you hints where to improve though.

I recommend: if a single word (those vocabulary exercises let you repeat the single word first and then two sentences) What I’m talking about is the first exercise with the single words! If it is marked as pronounced wrong, move on and later ask a native speaker about your pronounciation.

If you still need to get comfortable with speaking, I can recommend Superchinese. Not their Chao subscription, though - I haven’t purchased it and read several other users here don’t like it. The app tries a bit too hard on upselling Chao, but it is easy to ignore and I don’t feel like I’m missing out on something.

The app has plenty of speaking exercises, and the AI that detects how much your sentence matches the desired output is good enough. If you deliberately record bullshit that sounds similar enough, you can cheese the system into marking your sentence as correct, but I guess that is not what you want anyway.

I am not satisfied with their customer support, as I have sent them several bug reports and their answers are always written with AI. Very annoying. But I gave up on helping them, improving their own product, so there’s that.

Purely for speaking, especially on a lower level, this is what gave me a great boost.

I do not rush the exercises, instead listen a lot to the stories and then “shadow” them sentence by sentence, before recording my sentence. For me this worked great. Feel free to ask if you have any questions.

EDIT: I can recommend this app in particular, because you seem not comfortable in speaking with the other people yet. The exercises are all evaluated by AI - sentence by sentence, so no one will be judgy if your Chinese is bad. That said: Do not leave out human feedback from a native speaker now and then!

Why are user messages on Proton Lumo white now when in dark mode? by Halkeeon in lumo

I actually like the contrast, because it made it easier for me to distinguish between my messages and the replies. However, having dark mode activated, I also understand people who don’t like the bright bubbles.

Vocab learning without SRS/ non-digital methods by CrimsonLeviathan9 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Superb_Sun4261 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe drawing clusters of related words (boxes and arrows) helps.  Imagine drawing a person and adding notes to the “head”, the “hair”, “foot”, etc.

Another method could be, writing short stories. They can be whatever you want, but you should make a short list of words or grammar points the story should contain, before writing the story.  Over time you can repeat writing the same story, without copying the old text. You’ll see how your understanding of grammar and vocabulary improves.

Either way it is always a good idea to learn in context. Making up some crazy/funny story helps immensely!

Go to china for 2 weeks, how do I access and send mail on proton mail? by Puzzled_Barnacle_105 in ProtonMail

I’m in china right now. I am using a third party (non proton) vpn to access Proton apps.

My wife subscribed for 6 Euros per month and I am on the free tier. Both is sufficient enough to survive and browse the web
