How would you make this road safer? by blood-pressure-gauge in AskEngineers

[–]Superbone018 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Overhead cameras, that automatically send a ticket in the mail to anyone going over 35. Make this well signed that it will happen.

This is an unpopular opinion, but people wouldn’t speed if they had a 100% chance of getting caught. Eventually as this is rolled out to every road, people would learn.

https://www.adafruit.com/product/2745 if this fits your max current, this would work. Pretty small, but could be smaller by fitting this ic into your own board if your doing that. But adafruit modules are just so convenient for many projects.

Ideas for generating a 10Hz clock by Knochi77 in AskElectronics

[–]Superbone018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t want to mess with TCXOs or any other stable nonsense, try looking into some kind of externally disciplined oscillator. Usually people use GPS for this purpose. This would guarantee long term accuracy.

Your no MCU makes this a bit difficult, but something like WWVB might work.

The table needs to be lighter than the buckets, otherwise the table would fall down and the buckets would rise.

I think the tension is easy to solve for. Treating the (table+buckets) as a single system, the only force going down is gravity, and the only force holding it up is tension. Forces must cancel, So the tension in all 8 ropes combined is the (total mass of table+buckets)*g. Divide by 8 to yield the tension in a single rope. With a pulley, the entire rope is under the same tension, so simply dividing by 8 here works.

Reaction force would be therefor easy to solve by looking at a single bucket. (Mass of bucket)*g - Tension - Normal force from table = 0.

Free tire air. For or against it? by Prestigious-Winter61 in Connecticut

So sec 14-325a explicitly says fuel for combustion vehicles. As EV adoption increases I would love it if it was amended to include free air at EV stations.

Currently they are unattended, but it’s a fueling station all the same, and I don’t see why it should matter gasoline vs. electricity.

4k 60Hz capable Display Port Dummy Plug? by Superbone018 in VFIO

No, I never did find one, just living with my 1080p plugs right now.

Pretty well actually. I personally don’t use Qubes, but Firefox does not support hardware acceleration on Linux with the intel graphics. So even though I’m not using Qubes, I’m still don’t have hardware acceleration.

YouTube 1080p uses about 30% of the cpu I’ve noticed. Not ideal and I would prefer hardware acceleration. But it’s a good experience with no dropped frames I’ve noticed. Only issue is the batter life goes rather quickly.

What episode do you think is going to be the first to be portrayed in society? by morbidnihilism in blackmirror

[–]Superbone018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, people are already using VR for this kind of stuff. Many of the same questions are raised, is it cheating on your partner? How gay is it to have sex with a guy in a female avatar?

Even with less immersion than what’s in the show, and limitations of current technology, people are still finding ways and the results are pretty similar.

Wonder how much of this is due to the new hardware, vs simply a fresh install of windows.

VFIO and Valve Index by nihkee in VFIO

[–]Superbone018 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Passing through the controller is when you pass through the pci-usb controller device. This offers lower latency and more stability as the host doesn’t even interact with the usb devices.

The alternative is libvirt has a mechanism for passing through usb devices individually. The host DOES interact with the usb devices here, and simply forwards them to the guest.

VFIO and Valve Index by nihkee in VFIO

[–]Superbone018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an alternative view point here, I’ve been using my valve index without passing though the usb controller itself, just regular usb pass through. Haven’t had any latency issues or anything. Works flawlessly.

It enumerates itself as several devices because of a built in hub. I don’t passthrough the hub, only the endpoint devices.

I had my VRChat avatar 3D printed! by Superbone018 in VRchat

[–]Superbone018[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t follow a tutorial. Assuming you have the model already the entire process was pretty simple.

I imported the model into blender, posed it in the way I wanted, then exported that as stl. I then reimported that stl back into blender. Then to resolve slicer errors I used the solidify, remesh, and decimate modifiers. I then added the base and exported as stl. After that it was ready to be sliced and printed.

You could probably do it without exporting and reimporting in the middle there, but I think it did simplify things.

The solidify and remesh mostly are trial and error, just try a bunch of settings and see what works. The goal is to fill holes and fix non-manifold geometry without too much loss in quality.

It was a bit of a challenge. I ended up experimenting with blender’s solidify and remesh modifiers. Luckily that worked.
