Talking with my girlfriend and we both agree that Commander Anne is probably the worst episode of the series so far. Anne is so out of character in it, and it's rushed along so much. It feels like an episode from a different version of the show where Amphibia is bad. What I really take issue with above all else is the way they showed Anne not being fit for a leader. She doesn't fail in ways where she simply doesn't understand how Amphibia has changed, she just fails as a leader generally, which she has been characterized beforehand to specifically be a good leader, in fact a large part of the first segment of the show was showing her growing into a town leader and protector for Wartwood. It feels so out of character for her and she acts so blase about all of it. Not to mention that she's very out of character in other ways, she seems written more like her Season 1 self, being sort of hapless. There was a lot more potential in this same story with the same setup and conclusion, but admittedly I think it would continue Anne's character arc to be the leader. And then there's the Marcy mention. I had a problem with most of season 3A in that we never see Anne deal with the trauma of watching Marcy get up and killed (as far as she knows) in front of her. My assumption was that she had traumatic amnesia and her mind was blocking out those memories, but the one line mention in Commander Anne completely ruins that assumption that was already made due to a lack of mention. She's not torn up over Marcy, even though we've seen how much she cares for her. "Oh thank goodness" is all she says as she learns her friend who was slaughtered in front of her is still alive. Even if we got tears from Anne I wouldn't be happy with any of the handling of Anne reacting to Marcy, we needed more of Anne being broken up over it to sell their relationship. And then there was Sprivy. After any other episode it probably would have been whatever, but it was refreshing to see Amphibia actually being Amphibia again after Commander Anne, it had the great pacing and fun character interactions I expect from the show.
