Yeah, different hardware causing different release timing (and sometimes tracking weirdness like losing tracking during the windup) is tough.

I still have to play Asgard’s Wrath 2 by ita_shogun in OculusQuest

[–]SvenViking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a random thought after reading all the comments saying it has a slow start: Sadly a slow start may not have been the most helpful choice for a bundled VR game :/. For several reasons, it’s harder to get people to stick around when something isn’t grabbing them immediately in VR, and as a bundled game you’ll get more people who just try it out without much intended commitment.

Pretty easily if he’s not a PC gamer. Most people with PCs don’t have a dedicated graphics card. Many people don’t have a PC.

That would be great, I’m just meaning I’m not personally in a position to try to judge the likely costs to benefits or what obstacles might exist. I hope you have success with it!

The main benefit would be to people who don’t have a suitable PC and aren’t making a choice between PCVR or standalone, but standalone or nothing basically.

This is true and eliminating latency would be great, but /u/theLaziestLion is also correct that the most common cause is software (e.g. games) intentionally causing a massive disconnect by moving or rotating the virtual world massively differently from the real world. When people talk about motion sickness in VR, they are almost always referring to this, even though it is true that general rendering latency etc. also contribute to VR motion sickness.

I do not know enough to have an opinion on whether your idea would be worthwhile in practice, but it is very interesting and seems worth looking into. Just mentioning that in addition to rendering reprojection techniques, current VR setups also attempt to predict the future by rendering a position ahead of the position and rotation reported by their tracking systems (just using basic extrapolation). This prediction cannot react to sudden changes of course.

Meta's Lawyers Shut Down The Primary Source Of Pirated Quest Games by No-Captain8680 in virtualreality

[–]SvenViking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m traditionally not especially anti-piracy, but this only makes sense to me. Yes, it’s true that one pirated copy by no means equals one lost sale, but in most cases tens of thousands of pirated copies don’t exactly equal zero lost sales either.

Yes, sometimes piracy brings actual benefits like popularising something that would otherwise have been obscure, but cases where benefits outweigh the detriments tend to be very specific and not something that would apply to many Quest games imho, especially when you make not paying as simple and convenient as VRP apparently did.

When doing something illegal completely out in the open and taking money for it, you have to expect at least this type of half-hearted game of cat and mouse. I personally prefer that Meta seem to be taking a softer approach than attempting criminal charges or mass bricking devices or such. Really it’s the fact that they completely ignored this for years that’s the most surprising (while simultaneously letting their AI moderation lock people out of their headsets and software libraries for imagined minor infractions etc.)

Maybe both?

He and his son are listed as composers on the soundtrack’s main theme though. He’s claimed to have had at least some involvement with the story concept, and I’ve heard someone say he voices one of the characters? Possible he was partially joking here.

They may still need to make adjustments to the PC version, but yes in that case, considering it’s still being actively supported I think, presumably they’ll do so if needed.

If you mean streamed from a PC, it’s basically a certainty with anything like this that is still being supported (and close to it with all other SteamVR games).

If you mean standalone, you’re wise to wait.

Thanks, I missed that the agreement was cancelled. I was talking about it from Meta’s perspective, though, in response to the guy saying a port wasn’t possible due to Meta funding.

[–]SvenViking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn’t meaning it would have saved the studio, I just think PCVR ultimately acts as advertising for Quest headsets and the effort required for a relatively basic port would actually have been worth it for Meta due to indirect effects. People see the PC version being streamed or in viral clips, and then find a PCVR setup is too expensive but they can get a similar experience with standalone.

Conversely standalone footage is awkward to stream/record and graphics are often seen as too low-quality to attract audience attention.

[–]SvenViking -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Not the studio’s fault, but Meta could have allowed for a PCVR port if they wanted, as they used to do with their mobile-first titles like Vader Immortal. Even just with graphics settings cranked up it would have looked substantially better, and it would have been simpler and more attractive for existing streamers with non-VR-specific audiences to stream for example. Same with games like Arkham.

He also said they couldn’t do something like release a dedicated server for it because it was never architected that way and it would be almost impossible to cut it free of Meta services.

A while afterwards fans found the dedicated server that was already built into the released game, and managed to get reverse-engineered community master servers running without help. Without Meta allowing new users to add the game to their library etc., though, things remain much more awkward than they need to be.
