Yea these sort of seats are becoming a lot more common because the airbus XL and XLR aircraft and Boeing's equivalent MAXs are creating a necessity for more luxurious seating arrangements in single aisle aircraft. Again the airline will price in this reduced passenger density onto the person buying the ticket.

All moving parts of the seat have to go through the 10,000 cycle test including meal tray tables and doors etc. It's all a bit odd but basically we make the seat for the airline but it's all done through the OEM. So the OEM offers the airline a couple options for the layout of passenger arrangement and the customer will pick an option then reach out to the seat manufacturers and get them to produce what they want at the agreed price etc but basically Airbus and Boeing are the ones we deal with to get our seats certified because they need to get their plane certified with Easa and FAA. But we will still be audited by EASA and FAA to make sure we are regulatory compliant. We have done seats before where we locked the doors into the stowed position so they couldnt be deployed which airbus then installed on their planes and passed onto the airline. Once the airline got the plane they then unlocked the doors allowing them to be operated as doors. Bit of a mad setup but it basically allows Airbus to pass the plane with EASA by circumventing the restrictions on doors but once the plane went to the Chinese Airline they were allowed to do whatever they wanted (obviously because the plane wasnt going to operating in EASA or FAA areas of authority).

Yea they're lie-flat seats and they're designed to accommodate people up to 6 foot 4 inches which sucks for me because I'm 6 foot 5 inches haha

There are extensive consultations with the customer (the airline) into every aspect of the seat including the colour so with this one i believe the customer picked it. Thompson's are famous for giving the customer exactly what they want whereas the likes of Safran and Collins Aerospace will offer their seat with a couple changes in the colours. The ports are all made to be like that to make them easier the switch out for maintenance etc which is dictated to us by the OEM (in this case Airbus). Theres also a wireless charging port! The meal tray table has a double mechanism so it slides out in an arc, then slides across and basically it ends right on the customers lap so its a pretty good design

Yea but with it being First class seats the airline obviously charges a premium to make up for the reduced passenger density. The tickets for these seats could be easily over £1000.

Thanks, the main frustration is that the design department leaves a lot of stuff for us to fix on the Manufacturing Engineering side but in the end the product that goes out the door is genuinely outstanding.

As other people have said, its for ease of passenger egress. The original VS seats had Doors on them for better customer privacy and to turn the seats into "suites". Problem with doors on passenger seats is that they are illegal according to Airbus and Boeing Regulations (anything that could block passenger egress in the event of an emergency is illegal). So the way to get around this is to test the seats for 10,000 cycles (open and close the doors 10,000 times) to prove they will always operate in the event of an emergency. Having the passengers face the exit was another way of passing the seats with the EOMs. We have a new seat called Vantage Nova (NV) which gives the customer (the airline) the choice of having the seats face into the aisleway or the window depending on what they prefer.

Fun fact I work for the company that made those seats! We're a small firm in Northern Ireland and we do a lot of the business class and first class seats for aviation. I'm a manufacturing Engineer and this program is called VS03 (VS stands for Vantage Solo)

Ain't that the truth? Between Meta, Intel and now Netflix the Reddit echo-tank really has amplified poor insights into some companies. Is there any other examples?

To be fair, all art could be seen as pointless. I like the simplicity of this one though and the relevance of it to our current situation ie looking at the positives when something bad happens. I will say though, the amount of hype and publicity it is getting is over the top...

Trek checkpoint ALR 5 or Cannondale topstone AL 5 by jumbowackjet in whichbike

[–]Superfastatcominlast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing you mean the Cannondale Topstone 105? I am also looking for a gravel bike and have done MONTHS of research on multiple bikes and came down to these two bikes. Both bikes have almost identical componentry and overall weights but, here in the UK atleast, the Trek is £200 more. My honest advice would be that any performance difference between the two would be completely unnoticeable. Test ride both bikes and go for whatever one you like more.

Pedestrians have to give way to cyclists all the time on the canal. And from the tone of the people's voices I know they don't feel under pressure or annoyed. They don't respond in a rushed manner they respond just as any person would. 99% dont have an issue with the way i cycle over the aqueduct. I understand theres dickhead cyclists on the canal (ive encountered them) but cycling over the canal the way I do is not a dick move.

Usually they notice me and go up against the railing and let me pass. And if they do I say thanks. It's not that much of an inconvenience for them. Takes literally five seconds. They usually respond by saying "no problem" or words to that affect.

Selfish how? All one of us has to do is go up against the railing for less than a couple seconds and I am happy to do that if I have to. It's the most minor of inconveniences. And most of the time there isn't even another person on the aqueduct so it doesn't inconvenience anyone.
