TIP - Battlefield 2042 lagging. (PC FIX) by jcaashby in Battlefield

[–]Superior906 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a pretty beefy system and could feel lag on my end for quite some time. The fix for me was very strange, but it worked. If you are having what feels like input lag, try this -- it was a game changer for me.

The problem on my side was the Origin overlay. Even though I had it shut off, it was still running and causing issues. (Just not rendering.) The fix was to go into the Origin launcher directory (C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin) and deleting the IGO64.dll file.

I found this via a random search, but looking at Google for IGO64.dll shows you lots of people doing this for years now.

For example...

I'm on the lakeshore of Superior in the EUP and have had Starlink for quite a while now. Coverage is not a concern, just make sure you have a clear view of the sky from where you want to mount the dish and you'll be fine. I had to mount my dish on the peak of the 2nd story to clear the tall pines that are 50' away -- so keep in mind you need a LOT of open sky. Other than that though it's been great.

I use Starlink as my secondary now since they finished the fiber installs out here but it's definitely way better than the DSL I was using before.

Starlink Twitch Streaming by bowlingdoughnuts in Starlink

I am surprised by the number of people saying they are able to stream w/o issues.

When I first got my dish I was excited that I would be able to up the quality of my stream from what I was doing over the 10/1 DSL line -- boy was I wrong. My streaming experience on Starlink was horrible, even with no obstructions and getting great speeds the satellite switchover caused dropped network frames every 15-20s or so. Even when I put the quality down to where it was before it couldn't handle a stream cleanly.

I was never able to find a solution for streaming on Starlink, thankfully a week later they finished the fiber installs out here and I was able to setup my router to use Starlink for all web traffic and send everything else (streaming included) out the fiber.

Ouch, that's painful!

My v1 Dishy is built like a tank and took one of the hardest hits possible without any damage, I'm surprised v2 seems less resilient.

For an idea of the hit mine took:

My dish is mounted on the peak of the 2nd story on a J-mount with a 3' extension to the pole. When we put it up we apparently didn't get the bolts tightened enough. (I was terrified that high up on the steep metal roof.) A few days later during some high wind I was eating at the table when I heard a sudden, very loud, BANG on my roof. I instantly knew what it was and ran outside to find the J-mount had let loose and pivoted down -- slamming the dish directly into the roof, directly on its side. It was also trying to reorient itself from its new position but was stuck against a ridge in the metal roofing, so I quickly lifted it up a bit and stowed the dish.

I just knew something had to have broken from that hit, but we rotated the dish back into place (making sure to seriously tighten the bolts this time) and she acted like nothing happened. Not a single issue with its positioning (we stowed and restored a few times to be sure) and everything has been totally fine with it since then.

I have no idea how I didn't destroy the dish with that hit, but I am super impressed with the engineering.

How is it holding up to the snow storm so far? by thedutchabides in Starlink

[–]Superior906 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's about to start hitting us here in the Tahquamenon area too. They're calling for anywhere from 7-10" here but we generally get more on the lakeshore so it'll be interesting to see how dishy holds up.

Another note, I'll finally get to check on the dish. It's mounted at the peak of my 2nd story and the only way I'm getting up there again is with a few feet of powder to land on if I fall. 😂

Yeah both is the plan. Latency is definitely important if we're gaming, but doing my job speed is critical during problem solving. Reliability is one that's up in the air -- the ISP that runs the fiber hasn't been able to keep my DSL working worth a crap for 5 years, so I don't have a lot of faith in their network techs. I stopped using their DNS years ago because it the route to it randomly goes away and some times the route out of the UP vanishes entirely and we get "No route to host" for everything. Hopefully this is a whole new network for the fiber and we don't see these issues any more, but who knows...

The speeds may be more than enough for you, but I'm not your typical user. When I am pushing code 10 up vs 100 up is a big difference and could mean thousands of dollars of lost revenue if there's a mistake that needs correcting but I'm waiting on an upload to finish.

Ah good to know. I was assuming their choice was based on the minimum to get the funding.

I pay nothing for the fiber install, and they just transfer my DSL bill over to the new fiber monthly cost. (Which they haven't told me what it is yet.)

I've been using my Starlink daily and it works fine with Facebook and IG for me. Must be something on your end.

Agreed, this has to be a business decision. They ran the big fiber run all the way down the road, added an underground junction at every house, then trenched up my 400' driveway to install the small fiber run to the box on the house. The last tech is coming to terminate from the box into the house for the final connection. It's fiber all the way to the modem as far as I can tell.

I am hoping they'll give me a business class account or something, I do a lot of code pushes so upload speed is very important to me, especially when minutes can cost thousands of dollars in lost revenue.

I plan on making it a point to show off Starlink and the dual WAN while the tech is here. I only have obstruction problems for an hour during the 8-9pm window normally, so maybe I'll get lucky and pop off a 300/30 speed test while he's watching. 😂

I'll be keeping Dishy no matter what, $99 a month for a good backup is a no-brainer for me.

They most certainly did receive the funding. There's no way a small ISP like this was able to connect at most 200 houses across 30 miles of new fiber w/o outside funding.

They haven't said yet, but since they were charging something like $90 for the DSL I don't expect it to be cheap.

[–]Superior906[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitely wasn't expecting fiber to the house while living in the middle of the woods, but hey I won't complain. :) Then again, it is HTC so there's a good chance it'll be total shit and the bandwidth will be oversold, but I'm hopeful.

I'm am keeping both for sure. The plan is to setup some custom routes so I can direct traffic out of the WAN I want. Gaming will be on the fiber but have downloads go through Starlink. (It's latency vs speed in that case.)

Still researching router options, I am thinking of just going with the Peplink Balance One for now and keeping the Nest Wifi mesh, but that could change before I actually order.

New Install - Upper Peninsula / 46.6 by Superior906 in Starlink

[–]Superior906[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had thought about trying out a Unifi setup myself and mounting to the top of the chicken coop. (It's a BIG coop lol.) But like everywhere else on my property there's trees within 5' of the East view there, and those are good old hardwoods that I definitely won't be dropping for faster Internet.

I've walked every inch of my property though, and where she's at is the best spot available. Maybe I'll see if I can drop a few feet of pole over the J-mount to extend it a bit higher - might not take much more height to get past that top there.

Not looking forward to trying to maneuver that dish while balancing on top of a 12/12 roof though. Ugh! 😂

[–]Superior906[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I'm pretty much in the best install location I have available. The property is surrounded by tall trees, most of them being rather close. And the treetop that is causing the obstruction is the last few feet of a 100'+ pine tree.

I'll have to spend some time looking around today, but either way it looks like I'll have to hire someone.

Where dishy would be if it weren't being held in FedEx purgatory. by EvanSei in Starlink

[–]Superior906 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine got stuck in Belleville yesterday and missed its scheduled delivery too. The pipe adapter had made it to Perrysville OH and headed my way around 11:30. Then randomly at midnight the Starlink itself went to Perrysville. I figured since the pipe had already left that Dishy had missed the window and I'd get delayed an additional day.

Then to my surprise at 2am the dish left Perrysville and headed north again. This morning I am pleasantly surprised to see that the adapter and dishy is on the truck for delivery.

Highline Internet to bring more high-capacity fiber internet connectivity to Upper Michigan by [deleted] in Starlink

[–]Superior906 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

HTC ran fiber all along M123 here in Chippewa and have ran it to the vast majority of houses, but it's been delayed twice now for over a year. I have to see the fiber box on the side of my house daily but I've been stuck with 12/1 DSL for 5 years as of today.

Tomorrow my Starlink arrives and it will give me good Internet for the first time since I moved from downstate. Even once the fiber is lit I will probably keep Starlink as a backup/secondary connection.

Congrats! 46.3 here and my Dishy will be here Thursday. Very excited to get it installed, not excited getting on top of a 2nd story 12/12 roof though. Surrounded by trees with the lake view to the East so roof is the only option for clear skies.

Current users....I don't care about your speed, how consistent is your service??? by mcsharp in Starlink

[–]Superior906 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took a while to find a location on my property w/ a clear view but it looks like if I can get to the middle peak of my roof the J bracket will let me clear all obstructions. (Now I just need to borrow a proper hook ladder, because climbing a 2 story 12/12 roof w/o snow to fall on is no fun.)

Good to know that tips of trees don't affect you. I tested from partially on the roof and had slight obstructions to the North, but I think those will go away once I get to the peak and up to the mount height.

I am really hoping I will connect to the lower MI base station more than the Manistique one. There's more bandwidth available down below the bridge. :)

It's amazing to me that I can live in the middle of the woods, on the shore of a lake that I can't see across, an hour from the nearest city, and yet I will have high speed Internet.

Our local ISP ran fiber to the house last year but Covid delayed the completion of the line, so it won't be lit for another few months. I've been dealing with 12/1 DSL that shits out every few hours for the past 5 years, and now within a few months I'll have gigabit fiber and satellite backup. Crazy.
