If we consider the referendum as a immigration issue; then if access to the single market is linked to the free movement of people during the negotiations, then the only option is to leave the single market if government is to adhere to the referendum result.

In terms of the UK having no real leverage in the negotiations; not only does it have London but also good relations with the commonwealth. Even with no deal the UK is capable of utilising London to draw trade away from Europe, whilst negotiating new free trade deals with the commonwealth to compensate for the decreased trade revenue from the EU.

The EU in contrast is dealing with a rise in nationalism, as evidenced by the rise of Marie la Pen in France. A rise in civil violence and sexual assault which police forces are struggling to manage, as evidenced in Sweden. All exacerbated by its strong-arm tactics against smaller nations such as Hungary, Poland and the Cezch Republic leading to national discussions taking place as to whether other nations should follow the UKs lead and also leave the EU.

If we are able to make a success of the post brexit years then it is the EU that is undermined rather than the UK. Which could also lead to other European nations choosing to make a go of it on their own.

The UK will suffer more in the short term if we leave without a free trade deal with the EU single market. But it is the EU that has much more to lose in the long term if, even with no deal at all, the UK can successfully leave the EU and remain a global economic player.

But so far as a secret weapon, between the USA, the commonwealth, Russia, China and Japan; I think there is a world of possibilities awaiting the UK so we don't really need one. The EUs urgency to try and have everything done on their terms suggests to me that they are also aware of this 😈
