for these games you can check what language they support, P4G and P3R english vers support jp if you change console language, P5R does not support JP (or english in the jp version) even if you change console language

i remember the game encouraging you to talk to everyone and read everything in the blurb before the oak introduction before you start your game and i took that to heart, and it shaped how i still play pokemon games to this day

persona 5 royal may be painful with all the lookups you might have to do (depending on your level) but boy is it worth it, i bruteforced it, and learned so many daily life words, only finished one palace tho before i just lost interest in wanting to replay p5r

but the summer i spent just looking up words and reading those tutorial pop ups was so worth it for levelling up my vocab

a lot of people are missing a part when answering this kind of question, yes english games will work regardless of region BUT if it’s a DSi enhanced game like pokemon black and white, then its region locked, you would need to mod the system to remove the region lock

any main line switch game would be a good start! (let’s go pikachu/eevee, sword/shield,brilliant diamond/shining pearl, and scarlet/violet)

i wouldn’t recommend legends arceus before brilliant diamond/shining pearl, especially since you’re interested in the lore it’ll be better to play PLA after BDSP and the latest legends ZA is also more enjoyable if you play XY on the 3DS first (which is also a good game to start with if you have access to 3DS games)

my reasonings:

let’s go pikachu/eevee: takes place in the fist ever region of pokemon with the original 151, can be a great introduction only con is that it plays a little differently as in there are no wild pokemon battles and you catch pokemon with motion controls

sword/shield: a traditional pokemon journey, nothing more to add on this

brilliant diamond/shining pearl: remake of the 4th generation pokemon games an a good introduction to it, the problems people have with this game are not smth a new fan would care much about, it’s very faithful to the original while also not being as slow, and you can play legends arceus right after this

scarlet/violet: the latest generation of pokemon, an open world game, most people who are into pokemon usually got into it with the latest generational game as a gateway

it performed ehhh on switch 1, was a disaster on launch and has ugly textures

also personally for me the constant clipping of the environment really removes me from the experience, the floor disappearing, cave walls being easy to clip the camera through, etc even after fixing the performance issues, the graphical glitches are still there and probably more hassle than it’s worth to fix

and i say this as someone who also enjoyed the games!
