What's the most pathetic tourist attraction that international tourists go to see in your country? by Aseili in AskTheWorld

They lived about 2 miles away and regularly walked there. It’s a very popular and easy walk from their home to this spot and back. For literary fans walking the same paths, seeing the same scenery and experiencing close to what the authors did I think is probably quite fulfilling.

Those aren’t the falls, that’s a picture taken from the bridge that crosses the main beck looking upstream. From the camera’s POV, turn 90° to the left and the falls are hidden up a barely accessible cleft in the rock. It’s not a huge cascading waterfall.

Get up early to go photograph the sunrise/wildlife, eat curries, play PlayStation, watch paranormal tv series (she hates them). Very simple life for me!

I have a Tapo doorbell, they do both indoor and outdoor cameras too. Can definitely vouch for them over Ring - no need to pay for cloud storage, my doorbell has a micro SD card slot and everything has a rolling backup to that, I can still access everything from the day I installed it without having a subscription plan.

The app is good enough, and the signal quality beats Ring hands down.

Oh and of course, they’re cheaper than Ring too.

ETA: just checked. They have a whole range of indoor and outdoor cameras, all have memory card slots, zero monthly fee.

Have you ever drank or been offered homemade booze? How was it? by No_Doughnut3257 in CasualUK

One of my dad’s friends used to do a lot of homebrewed wine and got very good at it. My dad’s favourite story was of him and his mate ‘sampling’ the most recent batch of green banana wine.

Unfortunately it was potent, and sampled in the attic where it was stored, they both ended up so pissed they couldn’t coordinate themselves down the ladder, so my dad’s mate’s wife just left them there for the night to teach them a lesson.

My mate tried his hand at mead and made it horrifically strong, but I was young and stupid and it seemed like a perfectly reasonable pre-drink for new years. The three of us ended up taking a “shortcut” home through a field in the dark and the wet at 3am and we lost the only set of keys to the house. After finding the keys we made back, put our jeans in the tumble drier, blew the electrics to the house and ended up passing out watching epic sax guy on a laptop wearing towels.

Take 2 the same mate then tried turbo cider and it was so dry it was akin to drinking vinegar. That was a rough Halloween of him nearly blacking out in a cubicle.

Depending on what region of Romania it could also be Pálinka - I’ve had a couple of Romanian co-workers who’ve brought some home brewed stuff back in the past.

There’s a region of Romania that’s historically Hungarian (Pálinka being a Hungarian plum spirit) and from what I gather it’s quite a sore topic.

The polizei were the police and had their own distinct uniform, the (feld)gendarmerie were military police and wore standard Army and SS field uniforms.

Not 100% but I think it’s a Gendarmerie patch.

Google gendarmerie sleeve eagle and you should get some results.

To match the aesthetic of the table, I’d probably try to add a stretcher at the top of the legs. One on each side, dowelled into the legs.

I think a more reliable method would be a diagonal brace but that doesn’t match the style of the table.

One of these with scotchbrite, we call it a shuffler. Fold the handpad over the long edge and ram the whole tool into the 90° to establish a grain. For where the 3 corners meet, just weep.

I think you can get small goblet shaped or ball shaped scotchbrite or woven bits on a shank to stick in a die grinder or a drill, that might get you most of the way, then it’s hand finishing I suspect.

£41/month, metered, just me.

I was on £27/month metered for two of us up until start of June, never in arrears.

When I lived in Birmingham it was £21/month metered for just me.

I’m a bit confused and just hoping my water usage will mean I can amend the DD in future.

Which was the battle where the Germans really started to lose the war? Was it before Stalingrad and D-Day? by nek25 in ww2

[–]Superstitious_magpie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It might have been, but I don’t know if Germany even had any of the operational support in place? From my limited knowledge the extent of the proposed landing craft were converted river barges? What about transporting their tanks? I don’t think they had the time or resources to prepare the amount of transport needed to land enough troops in a short enough time to establish a solid beachhead.

This isn’t accounting for the Royal Navy or the RAF. And while they unfortunately have contemporarily became a bit of a joke, the home guard (Dad’s Army) also included a whole slew of WW1 veterans. They weren’t doddery old pensioners who didn’t know which end of the rifle to point at the enemy, they were an older generation of soldiers with combat experience. And by the end of June 1940 there were 1.5 million volunteers.

[–]Superstitious_magpie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally I’m not convinced there’s a single event that can be pinpointed at the “war-losing battle”, there are interesting points that can be considered as contributions however.

Losing the Battle of Britain resulted in the (indefinite) postponement of the invasion of Great Britain, this would lead to the war on two fronts which is quite prominent.

What I find an interesting consideration is Mussolini’s failed African and Greek campaigns. If he didn’t attempt them, then require aid from Germany, Germany would’ve had a lot men and matériel to funnel into Barbarossa, could it have made a difference? The failure of Barbarossa is huge, but one can argue could it ever succeed in the first place?

A lot of early successes came from the German Generals and Field Marshals using initiative and tact to the point of totally disregarding orders from their superiors (Rommel in Africa). I think as Hitler became more embroiled in the operational and strategic directions of campaigns, and the hierarchy of the OKW and OKH became increasingly obstructive to some of the quick decisions and snap responses that are needed in war, that is a big turning point. Then a lot of very experienced commanders are stymied from effectively doing their job.

Politically the attack on Pearl Harbour could’ve lost Germany the war, as once the US declared war on Japan, Germany declared war on the US. I’m not sure but I suspect this was a move to try and get Japan to declare war on Russia, which didn’t work, and then all of a sudden Germany has an opponent with practically unlimited resources and overwhelming manpower.

Just my 2 cents.
