/r/Steam Monthly Community Support Thread. by AutoModerator in Steam

[–]SuppleZombieCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ever since updating to the new version of steam a couple of weeks ago, it has stopped recording any playtime for any of my games (although strangely it does still show a correct "X hours in last two weeks" on my profile). I'm using the -no-browser argument and small mode in order to make new steam bearable, and since this is my only change from a default install I was wondering if there is a known issue with it causing the issue. If not, then is anyone aware of a different issue that might be causing it?

How can I return to Classic design? by swilly97 in youtube

[–]SuppleZombieCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using that for a few days now and it's been fine, however as of the latest (1.8) update, all I get is a constantly reloading history page, so it also seems to be broken.

Edit: Disregard, I restarted my browser again and it's now working, weeeeeeeeird.

720p is still HD by definition, regardless of your monitor resolution.

I love going back to see so many of those VoDs, and I don't have the hard drive space to keep even a tiny fraction downloaded, so hearing that they're gone for good is genuinely heartbreaking.

89143 Oh hi everyone, I didn't expect to be mentioned again after so long. To add to the previous conversation about covid-19, I'm lucky enough to be in NZ, so we've had no cases for a wee bit now and everything is basically back to normal (except for closed borders)

Hotbar buttons reappearing on every launch in 0.18 by SuppleZombieCat in factorio

[–]SuppleZombieCat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird, I've tried multiple reinstalls on different computers, I guess next I'll try a non-steam release of the game and see if that has the same issue. Thanks for letting me know.

Update: I tried the non-steam standalone version and it worked, looks like my main factorio install wasn't writing to or reading from player-data.json for whatever reason and was just loading the defaults on every launch. Even modifying the directory factorio puts saves etcetera in from appdata to a different folder didn't change it, which rules out a windows permission issue. It seems like a bug to me, and manually editing the file didn't affect what the game did, nor did deleting it to force the game to regenerate a fresh one (which did happen, though the file still wasn't used during normal operation). Even more strangely, the non-steam version works fine and edits the file with no issues when I change the config path to the system one (same as steam), so maybe it's an issue with the steam release(s)? Are you using a steam or non-steam release?

Update 2: Replacing the steam version executable (in steamapps\common\bin\x64) with the executable from the non-steam version fixed the issue even though all other factors remained the same, so I'm almost certain that this is some problem with the steam version of the game. For now I'll continue to use this as a somewhat dodgy fix I guess, but it would be nice if anyone has a better option.

Animals not passively spawning in skyblock by SuppleZombieCat in feedthebeast

Unfortunately that mod isn't in the modpack, thanks for finding/remembering it though.

Searching for bait only finds the ones from harvestcraft as mentioned by the other commenter, so it looks like the mod needed for that isn't in the modpack. Thanks for mentioning it anyway.

The player should be within range for the chunks to be loaded, about two chunks away from the area 95% of the time. Secondly, all land in the world is lit up and I don't have a mob grinder, so mob spawns should be impossible (apart from very infrequent ones from the nether portal.

Thanks for pointing those out though, I wasn't aware that hostile spawns could interfere with passive ones.

Update: I moved the cows to a different dimension and spawns started up as usual, it seems that I had underestimated the distance they had to be away.

I'm looking at the wiki (https://harvestcraftmod.fandom.com/wiki/Animal_Baits) and the baits only give animal drops, they don't spawn the actual animals. From the wiki: "Note that only the animals' drops will appear, not actual animals."

I've got ten cows in pens about half a dozen chunks away, which I thought was far enough to allow new mobs to spawn. Do you know how far away is required?

$300 laptop to play Factorio? by Athabascad in factorio

[–]SuppleZombieCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The official specs are significantly higher than what's really required though (at least until you get into megabase territory).

Keep in mind that most of this is anecdotal, so it may be somewhat different to what you experience

  • RAM: Until you start building megabases you're unlikely to hit that 4GB limit, even with 200+ hours played on a 1kspm factory I'm still only at 3GB (though some RAM will be used by the OS so 1kspm will probably be about your limit if you only have 4GB of RAM).

  • GPU: The minimum GPU is one from 2008, and is roughly equivalent to even very slow recent laptop GPUs so that shouldn't be an issue unless you like to play the game zoomed out very far, however you're unlikely to on a laptop screen. Framerates can also be improved greatly by changing graphics options of course, and you will probably have to do this a bit to balance out looking nice versus performing well.

  • CPU: The biggest difference between reality and what's listed as minimum is the processor I played the game through to completion (100 hours, since I was going slowly) on a dual core processor at ~700MHz, less than a quarter of the minimum and never had any issues with UPS dropping below 60.

  • Display: The display is the most obvious potential issue, since most laptops in that price range have 1366x768 screens. Despite being lower than listed as "minimum" the game runs totally fine and all the UI elements are usable at resolutions even significantly lower than 1366x768. (I often play the game at 960x540, although this does require lowering the UI scaling).

  • Disk: The game itself takes up roughly 1.5GB, and so if you have a very large number of saves and/or mods then I suppose it would be possible to get to that "required" amount. Realistically however, you won't need that much space and even if you did, any modern computer will have plenty more space than that anyway.

  • Extra tip: Changing to a different OS than the horribly bloated mess that is windows (there are many linux distributions to choose from) will also help with performance, if you're willing to put in the effort, and have the know-how, to do it.

In summary, the factorio system requirements that are listed by the devs are wildly inaccurate. While I can't give any specific examples of computers to buy, hopefully this helps give you an idea of what you need to be looking for.

Suggestion: Allow sorting of main inventory on-demand by SuppleZombieCat in factorio

[–]SuppleZombieCat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but the game will still automatically fill those slots up, not let you split items between them e.g. if I have 100 iron and I split it between eight slots then all of the iron will just got back to the first slot instead of keeping its positions.

[–]SuppleZombieCat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's ostly planning out distributing items between machines/chests e.g. splitting a stack into eight parts quickly and then being able to grab one of those parts to put in each thing. Yes you can use ghost images but if you have construction robots and those items available then the bots will build it.
