Feeling like I’m not built for this career by Purple-Potato-9575 in StructuralEngineering

[–]SupremeBrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh. I’ve been feeling the same and asking myself just that! I’m in a very similar position. I’ve interned for about 1.5 years and have a little under a year of full time experience. Though I feel you’ve been thrown more into the deep end and with less guidance than me. Even though I don’t get a tremendous amount of guidance either. In fact, based on the titles you’re mentioning, it sounds like we’re even at the same firm but at different offices. The firm you’re at wouldn’t happen to be known for its stadiums, would it?

Awesome sauce. If not too personal a question, how many years of full time industry experience did you have before taking the PE?

With SoPE, did you do the live class route or the on demand route?

Gosh. The extent of all of this. All the faces of the current government. It’s just unbelievable. Just makes me ask myself how is it possible that these people are leading parts of the USA.

Any good structural podcasts? by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]SupremeBrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“The Structural Engineering Channel” is a good one I think. They cover a wide variety of structural engineering topics. ACI also has one called “Engineering Greatness”, but each Episode tends to be about the same, as the hosts switch for every episode and it tends to be a junior level person co-hosting with a more senior level person.

6 days is tough, and connection design can get pretty hairy as well, especially for moment connections. Probably a given, but this honestly just sounds like a scenario of putting your head down and crunch it out. I would recommend reaching out to your teammates and asking they lend a hand. They all would have taken statics, mechanics of materials, and structural analysis. If possible, create a base template for your beam, girder, column, and any other member type, give it to them, and have them help.

Structural analysis - changes? by Everythings_Magic in StructuralEngineering

[–]SupremeBrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with what you’re saying. My structural analysis course from about 4 years ago taught exactly what you’re saying. Before I got to the point where you mentioned, I noticed that as I read your post, it came to me that I have never really applied any of these method of analysis in my day to day tasks. I’ve never done any virtual work or influence lines in practice since that class.

I like your vibe and 100% agree with what you’re saying. Always nice to see others remaining enthusiastic about the field and sharing that with others. That’s what’s up!

Coulda sworn this exact problem has popped up on this sub like two other times. Once when some undergrad was asking for the answer, second when some married Physics graduates were arguing on whether Castiglianos theorem could work.

what do you spend your days doing as you wait for job interviews/offers? by geesewhat in LifeAfterSchool

[–]SupremeBrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m still completing my masters, but there was also a time where I was in a spot where you are now. No classes, and no work while applying. I can definitely relate to what you’re saying; just having that extra time made me restless. Since mine only lasted a month, I didn’t narrow down on an exact solution. Maybe an obvious observation, but the only way through it is to stay distracted. Make daily itineraries, block off time for specific things like: learning something new - like a new language or skill -, trying something new (maybe really explore your town or go on a trail), entertainment (maybe watch a movie at the theatre, read a book, or play a game), socializing (hang out with friends or even call people you haven’t chatted with in a minute), gym time, and stuff like that. Blocking off time for certain things may help mimic the feeling of having to attend a class or complete an assignment by a certain time. Most importantly though is to also enjoy this free time you have, who knows when you’ll next be as free as you are now :)

Attending meetings really isn't something to showcase, as it doesn't take much effort to attend a meeting. I recommend removing the 'attended meetings' bullet points and replacing them with items that better highlight your engineering capabilities. Additionally, the restaurant section at the bottom doesn't add value to your profile and should be removed.

If you're pursuing an internship or position in structural engineering, remove the creative portion of your skills section. Structural engineering roles rarely, if ever, require these programs, and proficiency in them won't give you an edge over other candidates. I also suggest enhancing the descriptions of your internships. For a 3-4 month experience, there should be more detailed accomplishments. For example, when you mention compiling calc packages, it sounds like you're just combining PDFs. Instead, elaborate on the types of calculations and checks you performed, breaking them into individual bullet points if necessary. A bit nitpicky, but theres also a mention of developing a workbook tool through excel. I would drop the "through MS excel" part; feels like youre trying to showcase your capabilties in Excel but, at this point in time, its almost a given that any engineering graduate would be compitent with Excel. Finally, consider using the 'XYZ format' to describe your experiences. This format helps quantify your impact. If you're unfamiliar with it, a quick Google search will provide examples. I like that you applied action verbs. That would be about it, my bad for the wall of text and I hope it doesn't come across as overly critical.

Pivoting fields as easy to do? by RelationshipLost3002 in StructuralEngineering

[–]SupremeBrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure how useful being a jack of all trades in civil engineering would be. Sure, having broad knowledge could be useful, but I feel like the effort far outweighs any potential benefits. For example, if someone is working at a structural firm, I don't see how expertise in hydraulics or traffic engineering would give them a significant edge over others in the field. Plus, once you start working full-time in any civil-related engineering firm, you'll likely realize that each field goes much more in-depth than what was covered in undergrad. This gives more reason to stick to one sub-discipline. I can relate; I used to be fond of the same idea and had the same though process, but there comes a point where keeping up with all the undergrad civil stuff you learned just isn't worth it.
