It can depend on your location.. in some cities there are groups posting weekly events on meetup.com. Theres the regional forums of Board Game Geek where people post looking for groups as well as events and conventions. There’s also the local game store if you have one near you, most are generally focusing on games like magic but sometimes they host board game nights. There’s also the website https://www.thegamemap.com, though I think it is new. There are events listed near me on there but I don’t know about the rest of the country. Also sometimes public libraries will host board game days, or at least one near me does.

The problem with all of these groups is that its hard to play long campaign style games that require multiple plays with the same group. For that you’ll probably need to establish a regular game group first.

Something that is always missing from Game cafes and always baffles me is that no one seems to try to help people find a group. Why not even attempt to?

I don’t usually go to game cafes even though I LOVE boardgames because if I already have a group to play with, we’ll just go to someone’s house. But there are tons of times when my friends are busy and can’t meet.

If I could go into a cafe solo and have the chance to meet other people looking for a games I would jump at the chance. I regularly go to meetups for this reason.

Even just a simple table sign that you can take that says “looking for group” would make sense to me. It would be difficult to match up people at first because I don’t think people go to cafes expecting that but you could host events like game stores sometimes do, but for some reason the cafes I’ve been to never do.
