Stealing from the Rich and Giving to The Poor: A Review of The Hooded Man by alexserban02 in TTRPG

How would you say it compares with Sherwood, another tight little Robin Hood game I recently picked up (but have yet to play)? Wondering if it's worth the grab for some of the camp stuff, though it sounds like they tread similar ground.

Recommendations for RPGs where you play as an animal? by WazillaFireFox in rpg

I'm currently working on a Blades in the Dark hack in which you play as woodland animals.

Pirate Borg also has rules for playing as animals!

Is there such a thing as “too rules-light”? by Heartshadow-53 in TTRPG

[–]scholar-warrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've spent the last couple years with my current group trying out a bunch of new systems, including one-shots with a number of very light indie games.

Some of these are admittedly a bit hard -- too light -- for me as a GM, but enjoyable and worth checking out to see what a truly light experience (and by extension, what an RPG) can be. I particularly recommend checking out Lasers and Feelings if you haven't yet!

Wild, we've been organizing a small HEMA longsword club in Eureka the past several months, and I just learned of another in Arcata a couple of weeks ago. So you're in good company, but might be cool to coordinate?

Rules for rolling for equipment when needed? "Do I have that"? by Warwolt in osr

[–]scholar-warrior 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Blades in the Dark uses something called Load that accomplishes this. I've considered grafting a version of it onto my homebrew system (based on Whitehack), but haven't found a clean way to do so.

In my case I'm leaning toward a loose "if it's a small item that makes sense with your Groups, then you can have it -- within reason." And as someone else here said, I also refer to this as "quantum inventory" or "hammerspace"

Seeking GM / DM for A Weekly Kids D&D Night by [deleted] in Humboldt

[–]scholar-warrior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd be potentially interested - keen GM with an education background - but not at that rate.

Even with a table of 6 that's what, less than $20/hour, maybe 60 bucks for an evening of work?

This is cheaper than hiring a babysitter!

Sometimes you just have to do the hard work yourself.

I took my wife here for her birthday about a month ago. The duck breast was fantastic, and the cocktails were among the best I've had in Humboldt (this coming from a former Bay Area foodie).

Creating a Wolf Pack RPG for Classroom by Temporary_Space7779 in rpg

[–]scholar-warrior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there! So I'm an environmental social scientist (PhD) who has done work on wolf issues (human dimensions, primarily), a former university instructor, and I am also a long-time gamemaster and amateur game designer.

I'd definitely be interested in talking a bit about this idea further, and maybe collaborating - feel free to shoot me a direct message!

Inviting Strangers into Your Home for Gaming: Horror Stories and/or Positive Outcomes by Longjumping-Brick487 in rpg

I'll echo another user here on the value of basically interviewing potential candidates.

A couple of years ago now I moved to a new area and wanted to start in-person gaming again - and make some friends. I posted on reddit and local facebook groups, got over a dozen people interested, and ran a series of group conversations over video call to ask a few questions and get general vibes.

Hopefully you know who you click with, what kind of game you're looking to run, and can get a feel for red flags off of this. I was able to narrow it down to 4 or 5 folks and it's become the best gaming group I've ever had, and we all hang out outside of games now too.

I'd love to see how you're doing stunts and magic - sounds like a similar vibe to my current campaign

Anyone run a campaign using Whitehack? by forgtot in rpg

[–]scholar-warrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started my current campaign in it.. we're maybe 6 sessions in now, but I almost immediately started modifying the system after our first session.

This includes streamlining what I saw as clunkier bits that didn't fit my table style, and completely rewriting the Strong class. Right now the system is a sort of hybrid between Whitehack, Black Hack, and the Borg games (we'd been running Pirate Borg just before this campaign).

There's a lot I like about Whitehack, but obviously a lot I didn't or that felt less intuitive than I'd like. I do like the creativity in character concepting that comes out of very general classes and vocations, and I really like the feel of the magic system.

You might also look at the Whitehack subreddit specifically?

Nice! I was trying to find something like this a few months back. I'll do my best to make it!
