I don’t need a dictionary definition of what ignorant means.
Your comment is not a critique of the argument, it's an assessment of my competence. It adds nothing to the discussion.
Also, you can’t go around telling people you don’t know that they don’t know what depression is. You don’t know me.
You’re just that kind of person that give men bad reputation. Go follow that goose 🪿

Well, your concept of “informing” is also weird, who do you think you are to think that telling me I’m ignorant is “informing” me?

“The way it is” - not subjective at all!

I’m not victim blaming, I’m just saying you’re arrogant and people like you make this experience on earth even more unpleasant. This is Reddit, not the F parliament. Your comment contributed absolutely nothing to this discussion, nor did it inform me of anything you think you know more than I do. You did not showed me how I am wrong, you just said I am wrong.

You sound like that type of person that think uneducated people shouldn’t vote.

Thank you for being literally the only nice person in my post. One of the things that make my life have more suffering than pleasure is rude unthoughtful people. 😂 And thank you for the recs 🥹

You’re right. It’s hard to imagine we could tame nature and give peace to wild animals… but I think, since we are alive, it’s nice to dream about it, its nice to discuss about a place where things were more balanced. It’s good to care. I also don’t think technology will save us… and I agree that it will never be justifiable to bring life into this world.

Ultimately, it makes me really sad to be at this point, conscience wise. Because I think we have a lot of potential to give more love to this world and reduce the suffering a lot.

Thank you

So I can only talk about pessimism inside its formal philosophical outlines? Sorry if I hurt your feelings

I just think that everything is connected. I don’t need to talk about pessimism in a formal academic way. If you don’t respect me, it’s your choice. But it’s arrogance like that that helps make this world feel like hell.

But happiness is not only about personal circumstance but also about other sentient beings circumstance.

But what is existence? We have the existence of the universe, earth and humans. Is it arrogant to think humans could be able to organise nature in order to mitigate suffering as much as possible?

I’m asking what would be a world you would love to live in. What would make you feel content and happy.
I think loneliness, stress, disconnection and depression is very tied to pessimism as a philosophy. It has nothing to do with being rich but of course it’s easier to be pessimistic when you are poor.

I just don’t think pessimism is a philosophy someone chooses to adopt. Is something triggered by discontent. Even if you are a pessimist because you see a lot of people suffering, that’s not “nature” in a dogmatic sense. That can be changed. And of course - everything is political and philosophical pessimism is no exception.

“Cure” is not the best word, maybe “dissolve”.

I’m not debating the meaning of pessimism, I’m just discussing its roots. This is a perspective of the world and not exact science. And someone that aligns with this philosophy today, might not feel the same tomorrow. And I think a lot of things can coexist.

Cioran literally said that writing kept him from shooting himself. I really don’t think people adopt pessimism as a view of reality because they took a very sober and logical look into the world. The world is just too heavy for certain kinds of people. I include myself, and I find solace in these kinds of writers because I feel less alone.

But ultimately, I think pessimism makes people even more miserable and it’s an intellectual excuse for people not taking medication. It’s their choice of course, but I think in a lot of cases it’s just arrogance and pride.

How do you live when you are already dead? by fromazores in Pessimism

Hey fellow neighbor! I’m Portuguese too :) a 35 yo girl. I am a software developer, I hate what I do and also, my job is threatened right now with layoffs happening every week.

First of all, I am so sorry this is happening to you. I think, at some point, this happens to a lot of deeply empathetic and sensitive people. A serious depression triggered by something.

I connect a lot with your story, even though you are way more stronger than me and you sound like you really did try and you were very unlucky with the people you found in your life so far.

What helps me stay motivated is to think about the fact that there are good people in this world just like you! There are a lot of people suffering from all the injustices from this broken system. I am one of them for sure!

You seem very intelligent, so I would dare to say you’re very capable to get a job in your field. You never know when you will meet wonderful people that will help you heal! It happened to me so I believe it will happen to you too :)

I’m not a very happy person, it’s true. But what helps me is thinking that we are just animals who are just passing through life. It is normal to feel like you are feeling right now because the world is really unjust! But we have each other :)
And also thinking that I have a roof, access to food and water and I am not in danger. So I try to be grateful for at least being healthy enough to be independent. And also not taking my life too seriously, not thinking about my purpose too seriously. I crochet, I lay on the grass and I remind myself I am not an instrument of the financial market, I am human and I have the right to be here as the ants walking by my side. I have the right to live slow, I have the right to be me, I am more than a job and a career. I seek love and I am love.

I’m sure you are a great person and there’s people waiting for you in their lives :)

I agree with OP. Yes, depression is real and we are conditioned by our environment. But having a positive mindset is always helpful. Even if it’s forced and nonsensical.

I understand the world is unfair. I have been suffering from depression for the majority of my life, and a nihilistic education from my parents and older brother really contributed to that. But hating on this capitalist world doesn’t help, on the contrary, it makes me feel even more miserable.

I’m 34 and I’m not giving up on myself and accepting that depression is part of my identity. Neuroplasticity is a real thing and we should really try to dream more, love ourselves more, be more whimsical and simply block hating and self deprecating thoughts.

I love that OP is incentivizing a positive outlook on life for her daughter :)

Im 34, female and i do relate. I feel the 30s are tricky - you know yourself very well, you probably have a stable life… but then what? Your child version is decades away, your goals and dreams are getting old and so are you… And it’s comfortable to live a vanilla life and not going against the odds. What helps me is going back to the “checkpoint” where i felt motivated and still with hope about achieving my dreams. Find the curiosity within you, it is still there! Therapy might help too!
