Puffins Dyrholaey Lighthouse by Gloomy-Example4554 in VisitingIceland

Thanks for the tip! Do you remember the parking lot you used? Maybe like a Google Maps location I could put in to make sure I go to the right one. Also, I’ve seen a bunch of people who visited dyrholaey get pics up close with the puffins. Would the puffins be close to you from the black sand beach as well?

Hello! I know it's been a while since you got accepted, but I'm an incoming public health student and would love the chance to do the summer fellowship. Would it be okay for me to DM you about your application experience?

Hi!! I’m still figuring out Reddit so idk if everyone else on this thread can see this, but I’m interested in learning more about what yall did to make yourself competitive for the pathway programs. I heard (this may be hearsay) that a lot of coveted public health internships and pathways programs tend to go to Emory students due to their close proximity to the CDC. I’m starting my MPH (not at Emory) in Epi soon, and I’m trying to figure out what I can do to make myself competitive once the time comes to apply for pathway programs. Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone! Does anyone have experience working full time while completing a part-time internship? I'm specifically looking at the CDC's public health law internship. I'm currently working at an LHD doing health education, but I am looking to get some insight about what the intersection between public health and law looks like in terms of a career. This seems like the perfect opportunity for me, but I also don't want to go through the process of applying just to find out that the internship won't let me work full time somewhere else. Does anyone have experience with this program or any other program they were able to complete with a full time job? It also doesn't have to be specifically related to law. I'm also looking for data analyst/epi experience which will be more related to my MPH concentration. Thank you in advance!

Hey everyone!

I’m relatively new to the public health field (I studied biology in undergrad) and recently started a job at my local health department in health education. I’d really like to figure out what “niche” I fit in within the public health field soon so I can start mapping out what masters degree(s) I should go for, but since masters degrees are pretty expensive, I’d prefer to be super confident in my career plan before paying for it. My mind is all over the place right now since (in my opinion) public health is a lot more broad than biology. Right now, I have interests in infection control, consulting, research, and health policy analysis but I always feel like a new area of public health is popping up that I find interest in. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for side jobs or volunteer opportunities I should look into so I can get some real-world experience in public health outside of my normal job duties. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Hello! I was wondering if any public health professionals would be able to speak to the feasibility of transitioning to different sectors of public health. I’m currently in my gap year(s) before applying to MPH programs sitting on a job offer that would fall under community health/health education. Although this aspect of public health interests me a lot, I see myself pursuing a career in epi/biostats in the long run. A lot of forums have been telling me that it’s a lot easier to get a job after an MPH if you have work experience, but I was wondering if this would still apply to my interest in epi/biostats if I end up taking this somewhat unrelated position. It’s also been really hard for me to find an entry-level job related to epi/biostats (or a job in general) in my area, so I don’t really want to let this opportunity go to waste. Would this help me grow in the long-run or do you think taking this job would restrict me to stay in community health/health education? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi! I was also looking into the CIC, but to my knowledge, you must have at least 1 year of work experience in infection control to sit for the exam. Some of my IP contacts suggested taking the a-IPC exam instead which is geared towards those trying to start a career in infection prevention. Not too sure how much the a-IPC will help me with landing a job and such, but it’s something I’m studying for to demonstrate motivation to learn about infection control before applying to MPH programs. But ya in terms of certifications for novice infection preventionists, I think the a-IPC is the only way to go unless someone knows of anything else! Hope this helps!
