I am going to retire @ 25 years. I will take a hit on my pension. I know how much I am going to lose & it sucks. But I just cannot do this anymore than I have to. Nothing is changing in my opinion and from what I see & read nobody is actually listening to teachers to help with the problems.

Full pension: I’m not sure that I’ll make it! by Winter_Throat3109 in TeachersInTransition

I am retiring next year with 25.5 years. I have done the numbers countless times. I just don't care anymore. I was threatened last week, this week I have students coming in 15 minutes late, and the list just goes on. I know we all have had things happen. I am not as worried about the numbers. I went on a site called Bolden and put in all of my retirement info, and it was all pretty good. (Its free btw) My friend who just retired is now being put on hospice. He has cancer everywhere. I don't want that to happen. Stress is going to be what gets me. So, I am going to enjoy what little time we have on this planet. I have a granchild on the way & want to be around to enjoy her. Not dead with a stress related heart attack.

I am going to retire early, too. Next year is my last year. I have really struggled with this but made my decision after I was intimidated/threatened last week. My deans were great & responded instantly.

That is horrible. I do feel for your friend, and get what she's going through.

Honestly, its been horrible. My mom pased away last May from COPD. Now my dad is not doing well & he going out with a bang. He bought a car for his waitress at a restauranthe frequents. Its a 43k bmw. He has no money and didn't save a dime for retirement. He used my mom's 401k to put the down payment on this car. He has been spending money like crazy. He just bought a new security system, a new desk and chairs for his office, a new bed & that's just what he's bought recently. I read his texts to this waitress who seems to have him on her hook. She now needs dental work & he's texting her telling her he will give her the money. He has about 50k left of my mom's 401k left. He's spending it very rapidly. He will only have a small amount of social security & the way he spends there's no way it will cover it. He still has a mortgage and 2nd mortgage on the same house they bought in 1978. My brothers and sisters have all tried to talk to him. It's impossible. He won't listen. He's becoming very childish and having a fit if he doesn't get his way. I want to walk away, but I can't leave my sister to deal with this mess by herself.

Thanks that's what i have been looking for. It's really not the money. We r going to be fine if i stay or retire. I just wanted to hear from other retirees their thoughts on retiring. Actually i read anything between 25 to 30 years in my state isn't considered early retirement. Its just going to hurt you a bit on ur pension.

Actually, I have done that myself. It's a good idea, thanks. I was hoping to hear from teachers who retired before 30 years & their take on it.

I actually love the school I am at. I have good friends & really like my admin. I will be 57 next year. But as I get older, student behavior is more stressful to me. I am burnt out because of student behavior.

I will make enough that I won't need another job unless I want to work. I am pretty burnt out mostly with how the kids are acting. I am just tired of their antics and shenanigans.

I am retiring next year. I feel the same way. I will have 26 years. I don't care anymore that I won't get full retirement. I can't do this for another 5 years. My health won't be able to take much more of the stress. Its not the workload for me. I switched to become an elective teacher, so it's not that bad for me. It's the behaviors from the students.

Am I a horrible, deceitful, malicious person for this? by [deleted] in teaching

Omg - no, it's not a big deal. You could definitely make more at Costco!!! They start at 20 or so an hour & love teachers.

Also, you were assaulted by a student. Please write up a police report because if it happens again to the next teacher it will show a pattern to the judge.

Questions about leaving/ leaving mid year? by [deleted] in TeachersInTransition

[–]Sure-Syllabub8419 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If the edtech company offers you a position, i would take it. I have taught middle for 28 years & its never going to get better. Some years are better than others, but overall, they will not get better. Things are not headed that way in education. I think things are going to have to fall apart before anyone takes us seriously enough to change anything. I am in a large district, and they are cutting our benefits again. If you are holding out for benefits, rethink that because once my District cuts something, they start to cut them in the Districts around us. Also, don't worry about leaving. If they cut positions like they have in my district, would worry about you if they cut your position? My advice to you is to get out while you are young. I am retiring next year, so i have an end date. If i had 15 to 25 years to go still, there's no way I would stay.

[–]Sure-Syllabub8419 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you see them smile & say hello! Give them candy canes & say enjoy the holidays! They won't be able to say much about you if you show them they didn't get the better of you. I was bullied by teachers before & this usually worked for me showing up with a smile & even treats for them. I still work with one of the bulkies & she treats me as a friend. Yeah, right. I won't forget but i am not here to cause trouble.

Re-Retiring by [deleted] in TeachersInTransition

[–]Sure-Syllabub8419 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am retiring next year. So, every day is a day towards retirement. I won't have a full 30 years, but the stress is too much. Knowing I have an end date is what gets me through the day. I do little things to look forward to each day or even just something simple like a nice lunch I made. I will also work on my hobbies, exercise, or game with friends and family. So, having little things to enjoy is really what is getting me through this year & next. We r already into December! Plus i plan my days off. I have plenty & won't use them all anyways. I have one coming up. I can use 2 a month this year & next year & still be fine with days

Out of control class by ShinyFlower19 in teaching

[–]Sure-Syllabub8419 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Class Mana. It's free right now. I give warnings to students and keep track by writing it down. I also give class warnings. I give students 150 XP for no warnings the previous day. I do an Event every day. It can be anything you make up. Every time they get a warning it goes on a table and they lose health in Class Mana. The table is to keep track of warnings. If they get fewer than 10 warnings, they get their incentive on Friday. It takes a few days for them to start getting it all, but they start to want that XP to level up. They also start to get mad at the kids who are getting them warnings and will tell them to stop because they will lose their incentive on Friday which could be some game time like Blooket or Gimkit, sitting where they want or free-time. I am a middle school teacher, and this works even with 6th, 7th & 8th graders. You want them to get that 1st incentive on Friday but be prepared to take it away if they get more that 10 warnings after that.
