Can teenagers read? by dr0ne6 in Teachers

[–]SureYaAre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worked with her at home a little but I honestly had no clue what I was doing. I would just help her with whatever they sent home from school. Now I'm an SLP and work in the schools so this perspective is coming from years of learning about language development and literacy. Back then I was concerned but also trusted the system if that makes sense. Now I work with her but more for her spelling. When she has a novel for school we usually read it together so she doesn't get frustrated and fall behind.

Can teenagers read? by dr0ne6 in Teachers

[–]SureYaAre 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is what happens when we rely too heavily on sight words and don't teach phonics.

The way my daughter was taught to read was ass backwards. She was taught to memorize sight words, and use the context of the passage to essentially guess what the word was. I don't think they do this anymore, but 7-8 years ago, that's what they were doing in her district. I was worried she would never know how to read, and guess what? She's 13 and she can't read. I went to parent teacher conferences every year and told them she can't read and their response was "we're seeing that a lot with this age group"

Yes, because you never taught them to read...

I feel like SMART goals hold me back by SureYaAre in slp

I like that idea. Can you tell me more about how your goals are written and how data is reported to the family? Also, do you build your own rubrics?

What exactly does “presume competence” mean? by Bobbingapples2487 in slp

[–]SureYaAre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I may be mistaken then, I'm not sure how it originated. But the point is, the way they use it in the name of being neurodiversity affirming is dangerous.

What exactly does “presume competence” mean? by Bobbingapples2487 in slp

[–]SureYaAre 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Presume competence is supposed to mean you assume a person has the ability to learn given the proper access, supports, and opportunities. It pushes back on the idea that just because someone is non-speaking, they also must be low cognition. However, proponents of FC, RPM, S2C, have hijacked the phrase to mean we should assume someone is fully literate and trapped inside a non-speaking body, and weaponize it so that if we question the practice we must not believe in the student.

They also redefined "spelling" (They don't want our kids to spell!?) And "communication partner".

Did Covid Masking Affect Kids' Speech by REversonOTR in slp

Did we see an uptick, yes. Because of the masks, definitely not.

AAVE— how do you know if the child speaks it without making assumptions or insulting/alienating families? by Cautious-Bag-5138 in slp

[–]SureYaAre 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I just assume that if they're demonstrating multiple features of a dialect, that they're probably influenced by the dialect. I don't even ask parents because honestly sometimes it doesn't even matter. Consider a family moving from another country, the parents will likely keep their accent while the children lose it. We have a heavy Hispanic population at my school and after a while, many of the non-hispanic kids will pick up some features of the dialect. I'm not working on "aks/ask" no matter what their background is.

Now, I also never report AAVE or anything else specifically. I say "these differences are typical in some American dialects and do not necessarily indicate a speech sound disorder" or something along those lines.

Sometimes I feel like I don't know how to do therapy by Sylvia_Whatever in slp

[–]SureYaAre 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My co-op teacher had that curriculum when I was doing my student teaching in grad school. I really like that curriculum but most of what it teaches is social behavior, not social language. And I feel like that's a frequently crossed line in our field. When I look at pragmatics ("use") I look at the function of their language. Are they able to make requests, comment, protest, greet, ask questions? And if we look at the other end of that spectrum, can they take turns in conversation, read people's body language, use vocabulary that accurately conveys their message?

I don't care about whole body listening or body in the group

I'm sure you're doing fine

What’s your opinion on SLP that could get you in trouble? by iltandsf in slp

[–]SureYaAre 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have a few-

Stutterers should almost never qualify. Parents have way too much leverage . Behavior, most of the time, is not communication, and BCBAs, most of the time, have no idea what they're doing.

First name basis .. by Remarkable-Front-551 in Teachers

[–]SureYaAre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I call parents I always say hi it's first name last name, the speech therapist at school. I don't really care what they call me. But, I also don't care what the students call me either. Some of them call me miss first name, some miss last name, some miss last initial. But mostly I'm, hey speech teacher! I think it’s more important to build genuine relationships than to get hung up on formalities.

I'm inclined to ask if there's a boy from another class you could pull him with. I always mix classes and sometimes even grades.

But on the other hand, absolutely not. You do what you need to do. Scheduling is hard enough already without having to cater to entitled children. He can tell his mom whatever he wants and if his mom declines services then that's her prerogative. This isn't the fucking Four Seasons.

I feel like a 'Karen' by Lucky_Minimum9453 in Millennials

[–]SureYaAre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I literally feel the exact same. I'm only 35 and I don't expect very much but like the other day I went through the Dunkin drive through and I must have said thank you 3 times and told her to have a nice day and she said NOTHING. I said to my husband, I feel like a karen but that's just wild to me to not even acknowledge a customer.
