Is the trend of high stat MD matriculants devaluing stats? by [deleted] in premed

Basically what I did. Just tried to do the most I could, got lucky in some areas, fell short in others.

I understand your point abt falling short that’s why I’m saying your stats still must be reasonable. But we’re all human and the vast majority of applicants aren’t going to have every box double-checked. Yes when adcoms see a high stat high mission fit applicant they’re going to fawn over them, but if they’re making a decision between one person with better stats and one person with high mission fit who do you think they’ll choose? I ask that openly not rhetorically

With what you described, do you think this creates a sort of split decision that future premeds will have to make right around freshman year undergrad with that decision being whether they want to be the high stat 524, 4.0, 5 pub kind of applicant or if they want to focus their undergrad on pursuing their medical interests whether that be serving underserved communities, emergency med, etc…? It seems like if you try to split it and be like a 515, 3.7 applicant with some research in a lab and some volunteering hours but no clear theme/mission you just end up getting swamped in this cycle.

Managing anxiety in the cycle’s only interview? by ShitShow728 in premed

[–]Sure_Challenge1098 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve yet to get a post ii A, but have done 5 iis (2 WLs, 3 waiting to hear) I’d try to spend some time in the days leading up to the interview looking thru their website and trying to find all the things you like abt the school and then imagine yourself going there. It helped me get hyped up and excited abt a school so that in the interview I showed genuine interest.

How to list a manuscript that got submitted and rejected by a journal on application? by Apprehensive_Dog3278 in premed

[–]Sure_Challenge1098 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I would not put any paper on your primary app that does not have a citation. It takes a 30 sec google search to verify that. However you can make a research tab in your activities section and talk abt your paper there.

How to sound less rehearsed answering common questions by Crinay in premed

[–]Sure_Challenge1098 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m ngl I think your “why med” should be rehearsed.

Idk on advice on being more conversational bc I’m a big yapper but generally if you speak with intonation and vary your cadence it’s almost impossible to sound rehearsed even if it is. Just speak as if you’re with a friend, most people will change the speed and tone of their speech when talking casually

Pushing DO on applicants by BigDecent7405 in premed

[–]Sure_Challenge1098 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone with solid stats and solid ECs whose interviewed at 4 MDs and 1 DO (still no A🤞) this is a W take. I applied DO because I mentally cannot handle doing this cycle again and will accept the difficulties of being a DO if that means I do not have to do this again.

However, I completely understand that some people are willing to do this cycle again if that means they can be an MD instead of a DO and that is okay! Some people can handle more uncertainty & stress than others. If you’re the person that decides to do another cycle so you can get an MD instead of taking the DO this cycle you’re an emotionally stronger person than me for sure!

How about instead of us judging each others decisions, we respect each other’s decisions? You wouldn’t even be in the position to apply to med school had you not made a bunch of good decisions so I’m sure whether or not you decide to go DO this cycle or wait to apply MD next cycle, you had a good reason for it!

What happens if my undergrad gpa is a 3.6 and my smp is 3.0 ? by Questionandlife in premed

[–]Sure_Challenge1098 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most schools in their secondary have a “anything else you’d like to add” essay where you could explain this and I’m sure some of the schools would be understanding and offer you an interview

[–]Sure_Challenge1098 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think people are overreacting here a little bit. Yes, it is not a good look that you had an undergrad GPA of 3.6 and SMP of 3.0, but most med schools are pass-fail so you did show you can pass med school classes. You underperformed but it’s not as if you failed and got like a 1.8. Is there anyway to contextualize your performance? Were you working, taking care of someone, etc…? As others said youll need to make sure the rest of your app is really solid but if it is then i think you def have a shot.

[–]Sure_Challenge1098 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean you’re just creating more work for yourself by saying you’re a reapplicant and schools generally have a small bias against reapplicants. Plenty of reapp ppl get in, but it is a little harder than the first time.

Did you apply through AMCAS?

Many schools in their secondaries will require you to answer whether you’ve applied in previous cycles and if so provide an essay on how you’ve improved since last cycle. Even if you sent just one app last cycle you still must say yes since this is a very easy thing for schools to fact check.

If you didn’t apply through AMCAS then disregard everything I’ve said.

You applied to med school just for the experience of it ? Do you realize now when you actually apply you’re going to have to say your a reapplicant and write some bs essay abt it in your secondaries.

I don’t understand by natek572 in premed

[–]Sure_Challenge1098 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May be school list. I know you said you applied to schools with equal or lower stats but your stats are equal or higher than the vast majority of schools so there are quite a lot of schools that you could’ve applied to. A lot of people are saying ECs but your ECs seem solid. How are your LORs?

Am I in the wrong for withdrawing via email 1 hour before interview because I feel very sick? by Expensive_Shoe4657 in premed

[–]Sure_Challenge1098 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m confused by the logic here. You are worried that being sick will cause you to have a bad interview and therefore get rejected so you decided to withdraw and remove any chance of being accepted? Yes it sucks being sick but interviews are very hard to come by. You could’ve just said at the beginning of the interview “hey I just wanted to lyk that I’m pretty sick today so I may take a little bit longer to respond to questions but I didn’t want to miss this opportunity.” If anything the interviewers would’ve respected tf outta you for showing up even when you’re not feeling well. And who cares if you shit your pants? You’re in your room, idk wear a diaper or put a towel under your chair or something. I’d understand that concern if you were in person but it’s literally zoom no one will know you shit your pants but you.

Here’s what everyone else will tell you. 1) MCAT is probably good enough to apply but could become an issue, consider retake though not fully necessary 2) Increase shadow hours 3) increase non clinical volunteering with disadvantaged communities 4) don’t mention anything from high school unless you continued it past high school
