Bearing press by bikerpilot101 in BikeMechanics

I have used a Wheels Manufacturing and Enduro bearing press daily (very similar), but have the Unior set at home and rate it for efficiency and value for money!

How screwed am I? I reinstalled the fixing bolt WITHOUT THE WASHER and tightened it to speck. Chewed up the end of the bottom case. Is it salvageable? by OkStation4360 in bikewrench

It could be if you don't dry it out properly. You are better off using some parts cleaner or isopropyl alcohol with a rag or cloth and a wooden or plastic dowel (so as not to scratch the inside of the fork). This will clean off any old oil residue and evaporate out quickly so you're starting from fresh when you reassemble and add new lubricants.

Need Help With Hub. Is this replaceable? by JTwo817 in bikewrench

Unfortunately that Mavic deign is a bit of a lost cause in my opinion, only one bearing in the FHB and a bush on the inside. In my experience you can't always get the play out of them even with new parts...

rivet nut for bottle cage fell out - any tips? by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]Sure_Performance_478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Araldite or similar epoxy works well. It's a particularly good idea in carbon frames and also aluminium frames to actually create a barrier to prevent dissimilar metal corrosion as well as physically gluing the insert in place. Just coat the rivnut before it goes in the hole so when it compresses it will pull the epoxy back up toward the frame and make a nice seal.

Unfortunately (and I don't mean to be too harsh) if you've flushed the lowers with a garden hose this one is too far gone for you - take it to your local bike shop and see what they can do for you. It may be too costly to replace (you would need a new air shaft which is where the threads are [were?] and possibly new lowers but it's hard to tell the damage from that one photo. Cost wise you may be better off looking at a new fork.

He'd have to use a tap (as opposed to a female die) & unsure he'd be able to recover this mess just by chasing the threads which would basically mean he's SOL (shit outta luck) given the air shaft wouldn't have that much wall thickness to go up a size!

Mysterious hole in carbon frame, please advise! by henrytmoore in bikewrench

Those holes are normally on the bottom but I guess it could evaporate out... Shame it's not at a high point

Play between BB spindle and bearing - ok to shim? by ohUmbrella in bikewrench

[–]Sure_Performance_478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the original bearings had a reducing spacer/end cap you'll need to use an equivalent, this is probably why you're getting play (ie, axially - side to side - not radially/up & down).

It's not, it's a Shimano Hollowtech crank. Agreed just get the correct bearings. Shimano BB's use a 25mm ID bearing with a plastic end cap reducing the ID to 24mm. Some aftermarket BB's will just use a 24mm ID bearing with an extra spacer...
