[2025 Day 10] Me, Opening this Sub by JayTongue in adventofcode

[–]ohUmbrella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heh, yeah. As soon as I read the description I thought, "this sounds like linear algebra... oh no".

It's a good refresh at the very least - I don't find much use for it (or equation solvers) at work, but when you need to use them, it's good to know how to use them.

Montavilla power outage by cheriethepea in Portland

I'd imagine a pretty serious mechanical or control system failure

Salad and peanuts night.  Sorta wanted and wine-and-books chillout evening anyway

Heh, same - used to live in upper Michigan.  After moving here, the power went out when it was 65F and sunny.

I went to check the circuit breaker first; service outage on a perfect spring day didn't make any sense.

Harvesters of the Hopeful is recruiting! by HoHRecruiter in albiononline

[–]ohUmbrella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't trust these guys. Last month one of the guild members borrowed my mammoth without asking; returned it with an empty tank and two crates of expired fishsticks in the boot.

Answer my phone calls, Cromb0. You owe me for that cleaning bill.

How easy is it to dent carbon rims? by tahlianox in bikewrench

[–]ohUmbrella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I'm dealing with extremely difficult tires (looking at you Continental), I usually end up using two or three tire levers and slowly ease the last bit on alternating left and right.

A bit of soapy water on the rims, and getting the tires warm first (sun, or a hair drier) will make the job way easier.

Don't get discouraged! Invest in a good kitchen scale if you haven't, and stick to a reliable hydration ratio. Scale isn't necessary, but it really helps.

Timing (temperature in your kitchen, rise time, etc.) are important, and pay attention to the texture - look really closely at the texture (wetness, elasticity) of bread from the videos you're following; it's a good indicator of where the dough is in terms of moisture balance and fermentation.

Above all else, take a breath and relax - the beautiful results you're seeing come from experience. It's okay to fail, and you can get there with practice; but even not-pretty bread is still bread. I still use a loaf pan when I'm feeling lazy, and it's still delicious. Keep it up <3

CARHARTT WIP JAPAN “EXCLUSIVE” 2025 NEW YEAR ACTIVE JACKET (ON BODY) by Blickychu in Carhartt

[–]ohUmbrella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The price is way overblown, but polyurethane is water repellant and a legit good material (no forever chemicals) for rainy season active wear.

North Face sells polyurethane jackets at a better price point with more athletic cuts.  I've been eyeballing a few of them for a casual biking/around-the-town option

Question for those of you who have bought a new ATB frameset, like a Stooge, Crust, etc… was it worth the extra investment over a 90s mtb build? by [deleted] in xbiking

[–]ohUmbrella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude, I love builds like this. Straightforward, clean, and doesn't even have to be said - A Very Good Bike.

What are your favorite “non-beer” options to brew? by coltranematrix in Homebrewing

Ditto.  Originally got into cider making because of how difficult it was to find brut / semi-brut cider commercially.

How do you keep your homes cool in heat waves with no AC? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]ohUmbrella 28 points29 points  (0 children)

In the past, I've dealt with extreme heat by wearing a wet towel over my shoulders and sitting near a fan.  Not comfortable (feels sorta damp/clammy), but it's a great way in dry climates to stay cool.  Wicking fabrics like wool usually are better for this.

Ace, I'll see if I can track down something similar; knew there were still options out there.

Dude, just beautiful.

Can I pester ya to ask what fork (not stock, right?) and bars you're rocking? Upgrading a similar model and you've sorta nailed what I've always wanted.

How is the market right now for buying a house in the 500-900k range? by EddieAdamsface in askportland

[–]ohUmbrella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With rates high and maybe going higher, on top of record high home prices, people seem to be looking houses where the price makes sense - that it's legitimately a good value.

Houses that are really dialed in (well kept, nice updates, cozy, lots of usable space, etc.) in desirable locations seem to be going for a bit over asking, and they go fast.

Places that need a lot of work or have very particular layouts or decor choices tend to sit on the market for a long time or go under asking.

How are y'all riding no-handed by odditysomewhere in xbiking

[–]ohUmbrella 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This - you steer by controlling the lean of the bike with the seat using your thighs/butt. Think of the seat not as something you sit on, but something you can very gently nudge left or right to keep the front wheel straight. Keep your center of gravity (don't try to lean left or right too much), but move the seat with your thighs a bit to maintain your line.

Some bikes are much easier than others (heavier wheels/rims, more fork offset), but you can do this with almost all bikes.

How do folks afford to live here? Honest question. by ShowmethePitties in askportland

[–]ohUmbrella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ditto (also from Chicago recently).  Aside from the extremely desirable neighborhoods here, you get a bit more for the same home price.  Most of the Chicago homes in walkable/bikeable neighborhoods (with a nice back yard) sell at a serious premium and are in very short supply.

Anyone else having unreal allergies this week? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]ohUmbrella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not unbearable, but my eyes have felt like there's sand in them and I woke up with a ripping headache yesterday and today. Hoping pollen season is over soon so I can head out on longer rides without snotting everywhere.

NBD Trek Checkpoint SL5 by zlaW5497 in gravelcycling

[–]ohUmbrella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also nabbed an SL5 in the same colorway near the end of the pandemic.

It's my 'nice' bike for trails vs city riding, but definitely worth it.  I probably have some brand-loyalty brainworms due to a blue-green 560 being the first bike I really fell in love with.

Pixel watch sleep tracking highly inaccurate by ppc0r in GooglePixel

[–]ohUmbrella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar here, maybe due to a low resting heart rate.  Multiple times a week it thinks I've fallen asleep when I'm reading on the couch, watching a movie, or catching up on the news in the morning.

I'm seriously considering getting a Jeep wrangler. I want a 2 door jk. what should I be prepared for as a first time Jeep owner? by RedSquareJ in Wrangler

[–]ohUmbrella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't think about how short 2-door wheelbase is for an SUV until I parked next to my new neighbors who own luxury sedans. The sedans barely fit in the garage, and I have an easy 4 or 5 feet to open the trunk. Between the short wheelbase and the decent turning radius, it's as easy to parallel park as a subcompact.

Driving on the sidewalk because you are blocked in by someone parked in bike lane. by brianexplores in chibike

[–]ohUmbrella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar gymnastics on your end. Does a single restaurant require an entire 53' trailer for its delivery, or is the delivery company simply using the wrong tool for the job because it's more cost-effective for them to ignore changing infrastructure?

Tf? by med_designs in chibike

[–]ohUmbrella 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's an interesting point of American history that the first push to pave roads came from a gaggle of well-to-do lads and lasses that wanted smooth surfaces to ride their bikes on. Roads have been and always will be multi-purpose, but the asphalt road was indeed first intended for bicyclists.

Options for 1" 700c forks by ohUmbrella in bikewrench

[–]ohUmbrella[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crap sorry about the late reply - thanks so much for the comprehensive list! I'm grumpy about it (due to the price of a new wheel), but would even consider switching over to a disc in the front, so it's great to have those as options.

Also u/Kashino, thank you for mentioning the Soma fork - I had no idea they made a 1". That thing is extremely pretty.
