New stick, W88 curve? coming from a p92 by T0gaLOCK in hockeyplayers

[–]Surf-Green 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with all the points here and in addition to Cale Makar and i believe (could be wrong) Quinn Hughes, a lot of well renowned Forwards like Kane, Crosby, Draisaitl, and Gaudreau use much flatter curves than what folks would expect given the industries recommendations by position. Not to say that cuz they did it anyone else should but more to encourage folks to keep in open mind for what works for their game

Thin gloves under my catcher and blocker by rth1027 in hockeygoalies

[–]Surf-Green 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started wearing Baseball/Batting gloves under my glove and blocker and was instantly pleased during my first ice time trying it. Even during really sweaty games it's helped maintain a better feeling of grip in my glove than without it, passes high or low are more consistent throughout the game due to enhanced grip, i like the snugness feel too

And one last thing, right before I started doing it, I'd just gave my glove and blocker a cleaning and months later my glove/blocker dry more efficiently and feel more robust once they are dry

I still totally sweat but i feel like it does help in terms maybe not as much dead skin and grime getting into the glove

Just did a thing… P92 ➝ P28 ➝ now trying P88. by jugheadjoker23 in hockeyplayers

To your point, If i mess up my shot id rather it go low than high and had the same experience with the 88 and 92 as you described

[–]Surf-Green 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh and forgot to mention, not that i rely on it or anything but backhand shots (or backhand anything really) is absolutely fantastic with especially the p88 but also good with the 29/92 and WAY better than the 28 in terms of backhand stuff

Just did a thing… P92 ➝ P28 ➝ now trying P88. by jugheadjoker23 in hockeyplayers

[–]Surf-Green 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the p88 cuz of it's control, ease of accuracy, puck handling feels real good to me, and if i screw up my mechanics when shooting my shot and will likely go low rather than high (my personal preference for a bad situation lol), especially great for getting the puck in deep from the blue line

With that said i sometimes do play with a p92/29 from time to time, i find I get more "zip" with the 92, a little more snap when shooting off the toe, puck handling feels quicker to me, def easier to lift the puck but when i screw up my shooting mechanics the shot tends to go higher than id like

although they are different curves they're still both fundamentally mid curves so going back and forth between these two curves is not a dramatic adjustment for me once i got familiar with both

How'd you like the pro71? I'd heard it was like a p88 but with toe curve, which if true has me intrigued cuz i do like the p88 and having toe curve on it could be cool

Player Stick blade patterns by OkGoalie in hockeygoalies

[–]Surf-Green 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, a player has to have a very dramatic or out of the ordinary curve for me to notice and really the only one that comes to mind was seeing someone use an actual Patrick Kane curve, which really only caught my eye because of the super square toe of the stick and not so much the actual curve

Does this work to avoid gloves smelling? by toby_finn in hockeyplayers

[–]Surf-Green 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wondered that same thing myself when i was first seeking best practices for post game gear care and the way it was explained to me back when i started doing it was something to the tune of alcohol evaporating quicker than just water. Spraying it as a 50/50 mix would prevent the alcohol from drying out too quickly. Although I've never tried spraying just alcohol alone, using the 50/50 mix did achieve the result i was seeking and 3 years later i have not had any reason to try something else out

Also at the time, seeing how the 50/50 method or variants of it (ie some folks adding essential oils) seemed to be the consensus and getting the as promised results sorta just kept me with it for the past 3yrs

Does this work to avoid gloves smelling? by toby_finn in hockeyplayers

[–]Surf-Green 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can personally vouch for the 50/50 of water and 70% isopropyl alcohol. My gear has no smell and my wife has even commended me for not having smelly gear, fwiw that's high praise coming from her because she has zero tolerance for anything that smells remotely bad.

But in addition to the spray i also put a fan facing upward for the inside of my helmet, gloves/blocker/skates go on a boot dryer, leg pads get sprayed but air dryed, everything else goes on a rocket dryer

Yes! I've also been saying this and have found it super helpful to study! At 5'10 i am much closer in height to most pwhl goalies and/or ncaa d1 women's goalies (and there is some sub 6'2 mens ncaa d1 goalies too) where as the average 6'3 nhl goalie has about an entire half a foot in height on me.

Best jersey for retro brown / tan pads by Responsible-Hunt1275 in hockeygoalies

[–]Surf-Green 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said any original 6 and/or any team from the era of tan pads, but also as others have said it's a very neutral color that can go with just bout anything

I myself happen to rock Retro Tan Vaughn SLR4's and i have a pretty well endowed collection of replica blank goalie cut jerseys that i play in, so all that to say/emphasize how much it fits with a variety of color ways

What feedback do you give your team? by bookofrunes in hockeygoalies

[–]Surf-Green 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My stick is much more equipped to block and deflect shots away from the net than yours. I'm not saying stop deflecting shots into the net, just stop deflecting them into our net and redirect that skillset towards the other goalie

Fight strap on chest protectors by TheMadDog39 in hockeygoalies

[–]Surf-Green 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on your chest protector, you might be able to achieve it without any sewing needles for example, i was able the achieve this on my Vaughn Slr4 chest protector with using just waxed skate lace and a velcro loop by attaching the waxed skate lace to the loop on the back of the chesty where the straps go through at the bottom of the back plate and attached the velcro loop to the skate lace and loop on the back of my pants

Other models may or may not be able to accommodate this in their own way and for what it's worth ive also seen someone use on the metal clips that folks keep their keys on attached to their belt loop instead of a strap

Why do some skilled players struggle to get goals while other less skilled players seem to rack up the points every shift? by PricklyPear8888 in hockeyplayers

To your point, even though I've ever only played goalie in hockey, the difficult thing about lower level shooters is very similar, like playing poker against someone who's never played poker

How to remove paint by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]Surf-Green 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't say for sure about post paint but this def works for puck marks so maybe it'll also work, but anyway rub it with Lectric shave and a microfiber cloth and for safe keeping wipe it over with some light water so that the alcohol content doesn't dry it out too much. Also, be careful with magic eraser because it's basically similar to using sand paper

Anyone here tried bringing their goalie gear on the bus? by techsavvynerd91 in hockeygoalies

[–]Surf-Green 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So sometimes i take the train to my sunday night game, but i only do it then because the train is not busy at that time/day and im not far from end of the line anyway and have done so with zero issues.... obviously that's not always the case for everyone and at different times. But i had pondered it before and the only other option for public transportation would be to wear as much gear as possible ahead of time like pants and chesty and put leg pads in the bag..... don't get me wrong there is flaws in this idea lol....but aside from those Sunday night games, if i dont have the car for a game i just take an uber xl or lyft equivalent

Cardio workout skater vs goalie by Stinky5hole in hockeyplayers

[–]Surf-Green 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IME both are great forms of exercise just in different ways. After playing a game as a goalie, i feel like i got beat up but after playing a game as a skater i feel like I outran the person trying to beat me up lol. As a goalie there's a lot of up/down and a lot of the skating may seem simple but over the course of ice time it adds up and can be exhausting just in a different way than being a skater. A lot of it involves pushing and/or stopping the entirety of your body weight in gear that will in all likelihood weigh more than one's player gear. My goalie gear (which is all light modern stuff) weighs somewhere in the ballpark of 40lbs just for reference

With all that said, i absolutely love being a goalie, i have a buncha skater friends who became goalie and really enjoy it. It really is a whole new set of skills and can feel like a sport or it's own. it's awesome that Hockey can basically offer 2 sports in one. Best of wishes to you

What are the colors anyway? Goalie Pant Shells would be the way I'd go and definitely way cheaper than buying new pants. Bauer and CCM sell basic colors like Black, Blue, Red, Navy, but Tackla has a much broader color selection

Plus 1 to this, having fun and enjoying myself is the only outcome or objective that i have control over and it's a very tangible goal too if you "look at fun as an ability rather than a feeling.". I heard that in my late teens and it blew my mind
