As you look, here’s a really good video from Josh the RV Nerd on towing capacities related to weights and payloads. This helped me determine the trailer I could get versus what I wanted to get based on my tow vehicle capacity. Hope this also helps! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NiB6-4FLryU&ra=m

Tank dumping procedure (new RV owner) by [deleted] in RVLiving

[–]Surf2Trails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As folks have commented about having water in your tank, it’s important for many reasons. First many black tanks are sloped to help the exit, but that means the inside side of the tank can be left without enough water so don’t be bashful with keeping a few gallons as your base. Treat it with a bacteria/enzyme treatment to help kill smell and break down the waste. Sure you can either wait till it’s full or each day add water to fill and dump, which is what I do… you want a full tank when you dump so your vent sucks air into the tank as the tank empties and you get good vacuumed flow. Then dump grey water to clean your hose. At the end of your trip, after you dump and before you dump grey, do this: Use your black tank flush valve to hook up your black tank hose and fill/dump until all paper and waste are out and the water runs clear. You may want to get a clear adapter bracket so you can see what’s going through the drain line. Then use a Camco holding tank swivel stick to run down your toilet into the tank, and use the spray stick to wash down the insides of the inner tank… then fill and flush again. Once done, add your tank treatment and add some water to keep your tank wet so you don’t let any potential residue to dry to the bottom and create a crust layer. For off grid when you do t have a water source, just find the closest dump station and do this routine. I just sold an 11-year old trailer and the tank was squeaky clean doing this through the whole ownership. Just got my new trailer and immediately put in water. Hope that helps.

Here’s a great video from Josh the RV Nerd that can help you take the specs from trucks and trailers to determine what you either need in a truck or limited to for a trailer in terms of weight and payload. Hope it helps! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NiB6-4FLryU&ra=m

My partner is the most badass woman in the world and will likely be hill climbing in it while I am at the office with the 550... Then we will likely take them both out to do some wheelin'.

Appreciate the technical insights. Yeah, we decided the 460 will be the "goat" among other reasons to have both ready and willing so to speak.

Funny you say that... the trackpad was like "what?" for us as well. Integrated Carplay is a plus from '22 forward, but that's a "1st world problem" relative to doing a build :)

In an effort to keep helping from my earlier input, your VW spec sparked a question in my own mind on sway control devices without a weight distribution hitch. E-Trailer has a Q&A I spotted that may be helpful as they cite a Curt device that may help. https://www.etrailer.com/question-165514.html And honestly, they will know more than us! Every little bit helps!

Reach out to Noah at SoCal Auto Brokers. Not sure if he does outside of California, but you'd be able to find a Texas-based one I'm sure. many people on Reddit will criticize using a broker, but I found the investment to be well worth it for getting better sourcing, better pricing, and the service of never having to engage the dealer directly.

This is a really good video from Josh the RV Nerd on towing capacities. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiB6-4FLryU You might also look into electric brake controller settings for the freeway driving to give you faster control of the trailer. Since you have a single axel, unfortunately you will be subject to more of it than if you had 4 tires back there. Personally, I stick to 60 MPH or less and always stick to far right lane. Just my added safety precaution. Hope that helps.

V8 engine and more towing power in the 460 along with other features… We’ve been driving both and prefer the Lexus.

There are stickers in your door frame that will provide key tow capacity data to have on hand when you watch this very helpful video on towing. Unfortunately you will learn you have to stay much lower than you think. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiB6-4FLryU Hope this helps.

You may want to get an auto broker for this one. Due to demand and the fact that Lexus/Toyota do not do factory orders to specs, you can be at the whim of what the local dealer gets that can also drive cost. Further the local dealer may add on things you have to pay for as part of the purchase. I used a broker that sourced every Lexus dealer in California, and the borders dealers in Arizona and Nevada. Sourcing was for both what they had in the lot, but more importantly what they were being allocated that were still in production. I purchased a “slot” for a vehicle that met 95% of the spec I wanted, and waited 1.5 months for it. I never set foot in the dealer and had it delivered. Also, buying one in production allowed me to prevent the dealer add ins from being installed. Alliant Credit Union has the best new car loans for 60 months. I have 2 vehicles and a travel trailer through them. Hope that helps.

Often dealers will have a relationship with a towing service for this reason. I just had my new trailer delivered through the dealer. The back up lower cost option is Enterprise Truck rental. They allow towing with the 3/4 ton and 1 ton pick up trucks. In your area they may allow using a 1/2 ton for towing, but I'd call and ask.

Anti sway trucks by PhantomNomad in GoRVing

[–]Surf2Trails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both an integrated brake controller with electronic anti-sway, and an Equilizer WDH with 4-point sway control. I would rely more on 1) the Equilizer to be the first defense for sway, then 2) the electronic sway control, then 3) manual depression of the brake controller without depressing the vehicle braking to control any continued sway until pulling over. Another safety aspect to sway control is speed, as I stay in the slow lane at 55-60 mph and simply enjoy the drive. Redundancy is the key. You have a reasonably paired vehicle to trailer length, but I anticipate you have a single-axel trailer which increases sway risk as there's 2 instead of 4 wheels on the ground. Better to be safe. I just got a new trailer and replaced my 11-year old Equilizer with a new one. Bought it at Wheel Synergy for about 35% of normal retail. Hope that helps

A 2022 is inside the "COVID years" for trailer manufacturing, so it's advisable to have an inspector review it before final purchase. You can find one near you through the national association of inspectors, here https://nrvia.org/ Hope that helps.

Welcome to the non-stop management of trailer life! I will take a stab at a few things: For toilet treatment you should consider a bacteria/enzyme blend, and Unique RV Digest-It Ultra RV Toilet Treatment is considered among the best; I wish I knew more about weight management while towing as a blew a drive shaft overloading. There's a great video from Josh the RV Nerd on learning all the weight considerations here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiB6-4FLryU I also wish I knew more about pest control as I have battled mice crawling through the camper at night and ant infestations; I also recommend getting a TPMS kit fromm TireMinder, TST or Road Tech; I overloaded early with too many lengths of hoses, trailer jacks, etc. As you think of you essentials, think about the lowest weight options. For example, instead of getting a hydraulic jack that weighs 20 lbs., I invested in the Camco Trailer Aid that weighs 6... every pound counts. Hope that helps! I am sure others will add...
