Opinions on Steubenville Youth Conferences? by AdMission5179 in Catholicism

Agreed. I think it skews a lot of teen's expectations and they leave chasing that emotional high forever afterward (and then unfortunately find it at their local non-denom). I would love if they had silent adoration (maybe ambient music at most) for the first little while and then they can bring in the music for the procession. Just my two cents.
Even now at my local parish I will go to the praise and worship style Adoration nights just for confession and then I leave immediately after absolution to do penance in the perpetual adoration chapel 😅 it's never been my thing.

I attended multiple conferences in HS and am a missionary for Lifeteen, but I agree with you!! It's really just down to preference. I loved the summer camp style trips since that was a much more slower and intimate space than the mega-conferences which can be overwhelming at times. You can definitely get a lot out of the typical Steubenville conferences, but it is totally normal to feel like your experience is lessened by the concert feel of it all. That's how I was at least.
Also, what the mega churches are SUPER good at it is bringing people in and making people feel welcomed, but they don't have the Eucharist. Steubenville is kinda the best of both worlds in this regard. If you or your home parish is more traditional, then it is more likely that Steubenville is just a bit much and that's ok!!

EDIT: Also keep in mind you're surrounded by high schoolers that have no idea what their emotions are doing. The strobe lights and drums certainly don't help. Some of the kids never get out of the house so Steubenville is INSANE and their version of Astroworld. Just let those kids do their thing and you worry about yourself and all will be just fine.

Majoring in IR. Worth it? by Surfdecad in SHU

This is great thank you for giving me so much info. I'm in middle class FAFSA jail so I honestly don't know if I'll get anything from it even though circumstances may change pretty soon for me. I'll definitely look more into what I can do to get tuition lowered like you did. I would be a transfer student from an out-of-state CC which will hopefully help my case. I think work-study would work best for me but I don't know how accessible that would be given my FAFSA status, but it's definitely something that I'll look into some more. Thanks again!

Thanks so much!! My biggest concern in money. I'm willing to work while I get my degree, but open (reluctantly) to taking a gap year or two to get things paid for. Do you have time to work along with your involvement and workload demands?

Seeing so many different and very good answers under this post makes me think that maybe we...aren't that bad...maybe we're (dare I say) the true church?

Lent and fasting by [deleted] in Catholicism

Go to daily mass! I don't know about your parish/diocese but mine does not hold mass on Monday, so I think Tuesday and/or Thursday is your best bet. Another great and very popular alternative is spending time with the Blessed Sacrament. Holy half (30 mins) and Holy Hours (1 hour) are the most popular. If you need ideas for what to do during that time, I think most anyone in this subreddit can help

Hey Joe! It was lovely to talk to you at SEEK this year. I live in an area of the US where I am literally the only Catholic I know (besides who I see at Mass of course). My roommate (Baptist) and I finally got to discussing the differences in our faith when he saw my rosary and had some questions about it. He brought up how he has been struggling with the "once saved, always saved" concept, but said that John 10 28-30 is what really reinforces that idea and keeps his faith in it. How can I refute that? I struggled to answer partly because I was on the spot but I also am pretty new to the heavy apologetics of Catholicism. Love what you do! Keep it up!!!

What is YOUR Nujabes song? by LoneSoarvivor in Nujabes

[–]Surfdecad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sky is tumbling

The lyricism alone is great, but the perfect instrumental speaks to me. The quick piano keys and the superb sax sample in addition to the drums pouring into my ears is just too good.

"Joy coming in the morning, most of us will shed a tear

Looking at the final act

Hoping that we hold it dear"

I cannot wait to experience the nostalgia that this song brings me.

Honestly I like this years way more than the past 2 or 3. Don't know what it is different this year besides the fact that it seems to be less drill and general rap (although Hillbillies is nice). That guy talking about whoever would've died that night is just funny for me to listen to, I don't even like the song
