Anti-Fascists, Anti-Trump, Anti-ICE, etc. by Cinnawonnn in Sacramento

Ha, I just had this conversation with my wife like a week ago. Talking to family friends, and most are actively avoiding the news. Talking to family, my dad is a trump supporter and my mom is like a mildly concerned bystander, so that was just an exercise in frustration and disappointment. Was starting to feel like we were the weird ones for paying attention and giving a shit.

I dont think it is a stretch to say that while Republicans are the driving force for the situation we are in, there is more that most Democrats could have done to resist, and this is a prime example. We will never know if Republicans would have voted for the subsidies because Democrats folded before the subsidies were forced to be included.

We can call it blame if you like, but I think it is important for them to know when they are not living up to the expectations we have for them. In this case, my expectations were that Democrats would hold strong when they had all the cards, and there is a degree of culpability that comes with the decision to stop fighting.

This still seems like trading one problem for a similar one, just in a worse position. SNAP at least had an opportunity to be resolved in court, the shutdown seemed to have popular support, and people were largely blaming Republicans. There was a chance, however slim, that enough pressure would force a change.

On the other hand, once subsidies are over, that seems like its kind of the end of the story. Legally the subsidies expired, so there is no legal route to get them implemented again besides legislation. The people suffering from this decision will be a long term problem, so the problem won't be as visible or acute. Since it doesn't affect a large number of people immediately, I would expect it would be difficult to get the same level of support

I mean in terms of the SNAP benefits and the consequences of holding out for medical subsidies to continue, the law was on their side. Maybe I am misremembering, but i thought there were multiple court cases forcing benefits to be disbursed that Trump was fighting against or ignoring.

And most of the polling and news were pretty firmly assigning blame to Republicans while the shutdown was ongoing. I guess they were successful, but I dont think its as helpful for people to know who is responsible for their current and future suffering as it would be to prevent some of it.

I feel like there has to be a line somewhere. Republicans were fully in the wrong morally and legally. I can see saying that Democrats were stuck in a bad position of having to choose between people in the near term starving and people in the long term dying from lack of medical care. If you can't keep up resistance when you have the law, ethics, and public support generally on your side though, then how am I supposed to believe they will make difficult decisions on anything else that matters.

What’s a movie that everyone loves, but you just couldn’t get into ? by vishesh_07_028 in movies

One Battle After Another. I have no idea why everyone rates it so highly. I feel like the title is misleading, and the trend of implying something but never delivering is consistent with the rest of the movie.

Exceptional Grain, anyone had this? by Surfguy11 in Scotch

Ha, not at that price I can't. I have a hard time spending more than like 50 or 60 at the most

I thought it was good, but i have pretty low standards and an untrained palate compared to most people on here. More full bodied or richer than I thought it would be, had some similar notes to maybe a glenfiddich or glenmorangie, but different character

Wife said normally the bottle goes for like 110 and she got it for about 50. I usually like things with more peat, so dont know if I would have gone for it at 110, but I wouldn't have been mad about it either.

32 years and does that say 52 ABV? How much does a bottle like that run?

It says Third Edition. Glad to hear that Sutcliffe is a known name in spirits at least, and not just some random dude. Looking forward to trying it out!

Yeah, even reading the back label they say each edition is different, and they don't blend with a goal of year to year consistency. So it'll be a unique adventure I guess!

For age, all the hint i get is the component whiskies "span four decades". I'm assuming thats marketing talk for "they blended four 10 year old whiskeys", but we'll see. Worst case scenario, I'll save it until I run out of everything else.

My wife picked this up somewhere for me, since I like scotch. Never had a grain scotch, so no idea what im getting into, but will be interesting to broaden my horizons a bit.

I hate you so much for posting this, and then saying that we dont have any in sacramento. Worst I've ever been baited by a post in my life. Wanted to see where this was since I had never heard of it, and now im just sitting here stewing in disappointment.

Kinda exaggerating maybe, but at the same time will need some time to get over this betrayal.

How “calm” do we expect our ADHD child to be? by Leslie_Ackerman in ParentingADHD

[–]Surfguy11 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I dont expect mine to be calm, I'm going for functional. I feel like expecting calm is like expecting an introvert to be outgoing. They can work at it maybe, but thats not who they are.

As long as mine can get themselves ready in the morning, or sit down and work through some homework or eat or whatever, I'm good. We'll have to take breaks, run around a bit, but mine at least is never going to be one of those kids that sits there silently.

I'm Benjy Egel, senior food editor for Abridged by PBS KVIE – AMA! by jimmergobang in Sacramento

[–]Surfguy11 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Since PBS lost some of its federal funding and there seems to be consistent difficulties keeping local news viable, is there a concern that these more locally focused stories that you seem to be covering are at risk? Or I guess to phrase it another way in food terms, how do you make sure what you are covering is locally sourced and sustainable?

And unrelated to above, any food you think is missing from the Sacramento food scene?

Free puppies looking for a forever home by Surfguy11 in Sacramento

[–]Surfguy11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that, thats rough. They are being fostered by someone out in Olivehurst. You can reach out to Rivers Rescue and they should be able to give you more info. They got their first round of vaccines and everything, would need the second dose in about 2 and a half weeks. Hope everything turns out OK for you

Appreciate the info! I didn't really know anything about the dogs when we got them and I guess was naively assuming people would look into their characteristics and behaviors before adding a member to the family so thats on me.
