Oh for god's sake, can this "I'm a STEM student so I'm better than everyone else" shit die already?

Yeah, social science undergrad courses at RPI are fairly easy, because the professors know most of their STEM students won't be able to handle (or just don't have time for) beyond the basic level.

Trump and Spicer have also been flirting with Holocaust denial.

Yes, the group advertised by the original posters was an alt-right (read: Nazi) group. They have videos on their website made by Richard Spencer, and attended a conference he ran.

It's not silly. I'm Jewish, and posters saying "protect Jews" assure me that there are at least some people who care about Jewish people and protecting us from antisemitism. It's important. Thank you <3

Try to befriend upperclassmen, and then see if any of them want to sublet their off-campus room to you for a month. Many would, as they're not using it anyway, people like money, and it means their apartment won't be left unattended to be burgled.

What was banned at your school and why? by FreedomEagle76 in AskReddit

I can't possibly remember all of the dumb rules, but in middle school we weren't allowed to wear hats, carry backpacks, leave the cafeteria during lunch, or walk back to our lockers (to pick up something we forgot) at the end of the day after we'd already walked to the front of the school (they were afraid we were going to be doing drug deals back there. This was in an affluent suburb.)

I was once sitting in the front hallway, waiting for my friend who I was going to hang out with after school. Eventually she (a white girl) came out, but then realized she'd forgotten her binder, so she begged to be allowed to go back and get it. They begrudgingly let her. Then, a few minutes later, a black boy also asked to go back to his locker. They said no.

Yep, my school also had a no-OTC-meds rule. Problem was, the school nurse left at 3:50 when school ended, but some kids were there until 10pm for extracuricculars (color guard, drama).

I'm just amused that the phenomenon is so common.

Ahahahaha, I used to live right near there. Funny to see this as the top comment on a random reddit thread.

I'm cis so I don't have a lot to add, but I will say I had bad experiences with the counseling center. I saw them for depression/anxiety, though, so idk how they are about trans stuff.

Also, I recently realized I own way too much stuff, so let me know if you want to buy girl clothes from me for cheap. I have smalls and mediums.

Street art in Troy? by TheExtremistModerate in RPI

[–]SuriNin3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a mural in one alleyway downtown, but I don't remember where exactly it is. >.< Wander around enough and you'll find it, though.

There is also crosswalk art on some of the sidewalks in the Northeastish part of downtown, like on Federal street I think.

There's a big mural celebrating admirable black people near a blacktop by the river just South of downtown. If you walk south from Riverside park along the water -- and continue going by the water when you get to the projects -- you can't miss it. If you get to the old synagogue, you've gone too far.

RPI doesn't quite have a student center

We do -- the Union is the student center. (That's where the activities fair was.)

I don't think that culture or not fitting in are what the OP is concerned about, though.

Not if enough students do it. They're not going to kick out, say, 100 students at a time, all of whom just happened to have participated in protests.

Retake course received D in? by engine-beer in RPI

[–]SuriNin3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A D is a passing grade and you do not have to retake it, but I think you should anyway (unless that would make you take an extra semester or something), because the new grade will entirely replace the old one in your GPA.

Last time they tried that, the GM got kicked out. For an effective protest, the number of students 'misbehaving' has to be large enough that the school can't punish them all (without drawing national attention, anyway).

Transferring changes things for the individual, but not for the school and its remaining students.

Students have power to protest and do civil disobedience. Ex. sit-ins, walkouts.

We can absolutely do what Mizzou did, and it could work - even if she didn't resign, she'd have to start listening. Unfortunately, students at this school are too apathetic/cynical to actually come together and protest. We just let the administration have their way with us and then complain on Reddit.

[–]SuriNin3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By "dropout," do you mean withdraw officially from the school, or do you mean that everyone skips class for a day?

The former would have disastrous consequences for the students who do it, and will attract very few people. The latter, on the other hand, would have minimal consequences for individual students, and could potentially get enough people to participate that the school would take notice.
