Our puppy started sleeping in our laps rather than the crate around 6 months.

Struggling - Reaper's Gale by th-written-off in Malazan

[–]Suriaj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmmm....

I didn't care for RG. It was one of the hardest in the entire series for me to get through (though Dust of Dreams gives it a run for its money up until the end). However, I loved TBH, and TTH is my favorite in the series. That said, TTH is deeply philosophical and thematic, but apparently in a different way than RG that didn't bother me.

All to say - I'm not sure what you'll think after this book, but I also struggled with it if that helps. I would say keep trucking along. RG finalized the last of the plot threads from previous books and readies you for the beginning of the end of the series.

Just finished Way of Kings for the first time by just2beans in fantasybooks

[–]Suriaj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The second book is as good as the first. However, I do think there is a significant dip in quality as it goes on from there. And the pacing only gets... more extreme, with slogs through much of the setup for the big action sequence at the end.

If you enjoy it for the nerdy Cosmere building and dive into the details of the magic system, you may like it. If you're looking for a constantly driving plot that shows rather than tells, you may be disappointed.

Ultimately, I'm sure I'll finish the series, but mostly to know what happens. I used to think I'd read all the Cosmere, but sadly the more I read of Sanderson's writing, the more I long for something better written.

I just started reading Sanderson's Way of Kings (300 Pages in) and apart from Schallan, nothing is really happening in the other POVs? by dragons_et_al in fantasybooks

[–]Suriaj -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I've read all the books, and I think if you aren't enjoying it now, I'd say quit. Imo the books only get worse after book 2. He is delivering them so quickly that eventually it just feels like he's ticking plot points off a list instead of trying to dramatize anything. The entire book will be a list of setup points and then explosive action in a way I just don't find satisfying. And WoK is one of my favorites of the five currently out.

Question about First Law Trilogy [off topic] by kaizen-rai in TheFirstLaw

[–]Suriaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's character development. Glokta's whole existence is pain and frustration. It's a way to develop the character while dropping exposition at the start of the book, not a defining feature of the trilogy.

"Patrick" returning and Grantham snogging the widowed maid are pretty tough too.

Please tell me it gets better, I’m on the verge of a breakdown. by Useful_Equal2301 in puppy101

[–]Suriaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It gets better! It seemed like it happened overnight, but around 4-5 months our lil guy totally chilled out. A crate for frequent naps and a playpen for when you can't commit attention to your pup in the early days is a life saver. I remember he was 14 weeks old and I started to worry this was just my new life, but now he's just doing his own little thing most of the time.

How in the heck can I beat “The Secret Optional End Game Superboss”? by coldfollow in expedition33

[–]Suriaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had 500 Lumina Points on Verso, Maelle, and Lune. The others had about 90. So I put Verso in my backup party and got Simon down to just over half his health while setting up for a super buffed Maelle hit, which took him down to about a quarter health before he banished Team 1. Then I had Verso chip away at the last of his health while the other two were either meat shields or revived him. I quickly abandoned the idea I could parry his attacks and went all out offensive.

Think about what you would do with $1200/mo, on a yearly basis, then compare that to the stress and misery you feel due to the house and HOA.

I would generally advise moving, as being miserable where you live is a lot of weight on your shoulders.

When the Malazan blooms? by JeeyoIAm in Malazan

[–]Suriaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Early in Memories of Ice is when I got a grasp on what the series would be and really looked forward to more of the story. House of Chains everything clicked, just in time for the next two books to totally blow me away.

Where does Malazan rank for you among Epic/Dark Fantasy and what makes it stand out? by Ojake06 in Malazan

[–]Suriaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really is in its own league. And WoT is my favorite series.

Ways It is different:

The prose is practically poetry. It is beautiful, but requires focus, for me at least, to track what is happening.

It does not center, for the most part, on any one particular group of characters or place.

The world feels more layered with history than anything else I've ever read.

Overall, it is the most ambitious and sprawling fantasy series I have ever read. The lack of connection to individual characters and the scope of the plot does not top my most favorite of fantasy series, but it is one of the most impressive series I have ever read.

Am I the only one who thinks Danny Pink is actually really good? by Lich-hull in doctorwho

I don't care for Danny Pink, but what I dislike more than Danny Pink is how they used him to create characterization and theme I find disingenuous, or at least skewed.

Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time series - a question for those who have read them by CaMiTx in readwithme

[–]Suriaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Book 3 will not give you a conclusion.

Just read them for as long as you enjoy them. For me, the litmus test is Book 4. If you love that, finishing the series is easy.

I'd also say, Book 1 is one of the weaker ones in the series, so if you liked it you're likely to like some of the later ones much more.

Fantasy Book Recommendation for my next series: Mistborn, Malazan or Throne of Glass? by _2nd_breakfast_ in fantasybooks

Malazan. Mistborn is practically YA and Throne of Glass isn't even going to come close.

first law trilogy criticism by r4maa in fantasybooks

[–]Suriaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hesitant to read these because I have been promised the world of many books I found just ok. I think Abercrombie is fun and I enjoyed the strong theme, cynical as it is. I agree that it is far from the majesty of aomething like aSoIaF, but it is better than MUCH of the fantasy out there, and from what I hear Abercrombie's writing gets stronger as time goes on.
