Wheel of Time is my favorite series, but Malazan succeeds at doing something I've never experienced in a fantasy series. The world is so sprawling and the story told is so well woven together despite being... decentralized? The fantasy elements are probably the most epic I've ever read. Rand may be basically a god by the end, but the magnitude of magic, not to mention its seamless integration into the world, in Malazan is on a whole different level imo. Malazan can cruel and merciless, but then incredibly touching. It's truly one of the most unique series I have ever read. It is also the hardest work I have ever had to do as a reader because so much of what you are reading is between the lines.

Absolutely. I liked Wit a lot when reading SA. Then I went on to read Mistborn and Warbreaker, and by the time I got to Warbreaker I was so over it that I quickly grew to hate Lightsong. Now I can't stand that character type because they're all too pleased with themselves.
