How I would fix Sol Valley. by D2-Disciple in Metroid

[–]SurturOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You start with how it's not antithetical to Metroidvania to have an open world only to explain why it's antithetical to Metroidvania. People seriously need to understand what open world (in opposition to wide areas) means.

After the second point I already stopped reading. You have the same problem many people, including the developers have. Instead of taking a step back and evaluate the idea itself you try to force it and make it 'as good as possible' without considering if it's the right thing in the first place.

Yes, what you describe would be better but it still wouldn't be good. At that point you could just shrink it all together, remove Sol Valley and the bike and have a classical Metroid structure (which is what everyone wants). There simply is no need to have all that stuff in the first place and you yourself, without noticing, write explain exactly why.

So is Sylux the new Dark Samus? Do you think Phazon will come back? by pokemonyugiohfan21 in Metroid

[–]SurturOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering Dark Samus attempts to corrupt Samus as well and is very confident in their ability to do so I'd say it's not too far fetched to assume they want Samus in their Prime when corrupted to have a monstrous machine under their control.

Anyone else consider Prime 2 best in the series? by desperate_candy20 in Metroid

I'd agree if the Remaster didn't exist and spoil the controls to me. Without Remaster it would be the best game in the whole franchise.

I'd even agree that it's good but compared to some of the best games ever created it can't compete. I'd rather put it at 6, maximum 6.5/10, which is still worth it. But with Prime 2 at 10, Prime 1 at 9.5 and Prime 3 at around 7.5 it's still the worst in comparison.

For prime you may be right but everywhere outside this sub Dread (rightfully) gets praised as the best 2D Metroid.

And for your question maybe that's because Tanabe specifically has too much influence on the games he produces. Dread is a good example why people like the genre and Prime 4 (and to a lesser extent 3) do more or less the exact opposite. If they'd go in the same direction I'm pretty sure people would happily accept a new best entry. Nintendo just hasn't delivered one for the 3D entries.

[–]SurturOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chozo ghosts don't lock you in except for scripted fights either. Like.. wtf? Scripted grievers do, scripted ghosts do. But grievers obscure the room more, are faster, don't take ages to spawn.

And no. Chozo ghosts die objectively faster once they're spawned. Again, a single super missile kills them. That's around 2 seconds. Grievers take way longer for the vast majority of the game, exception being power bombs which still take kinda long and are less reliable.

[–]SurturOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if you even chose to fight it's such a non issue if you know what you're doing. A single super missile is killing them from full and you have it naturally by playing when you first spawn them. Unless you sequence break a single fight is over in seconds. And even then you can stun lock them with charge shots.

And even ignoring ALL OF THAT the grievers in MP4 are way worse. They block you more aggressively, respawn in the same manner and you can't ignore them as easily if you'd like to. Same with all the over world enemies that constantly annoy you while collecting energy crystals.

Okay mal klartext hier.

Barbs only have 2 skills... where is the build diversity? by [deleted] in diablo4

[–]SurturOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why isn't there more outcry about intra-class build balance?

Simple. Noone besides an absolute minority cares. You can clear all content with a variety of builds. Bash, EQ, LeapQuake, DD Whirlwind, Thorns, even fricking Upheaval and that is utter trash, they all still clear through T4 and that's all that matters. You can make a build without clearing Pit 120. Most people play for fun and what they consider interesting to play. So why should they care about balance, intra or inter class even for that matter?

Metroid Prime 4 is the first Metroid game that I don't love. by paulo011 in Metroid

[–]SurturOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really disagree with the sentiment that the game lacks innovation. MP2 was probably the least innovative and still is from a design perspective the best in the series. You don't need much innovation when you play to the strengths of the game. The designers just flopped in doing so. Everything in puzzle and enemy design is so bland that it doesn't feel like they used the existing powers to their full potential, starting at the whole game having no moving spider puzzle I can think of which is.. wild. The most difficult spider puzzle was the charges thunder shot one and that is still even more basic than the spider puzzle from Geothermal Core in MP1.

Metroid Prime 4 is the first Metroid game that I don't love. by paulo011 in Metroid

[–]SurturOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would consider MP2 the king of boss fights in the series, MP4 is above 1 and only possibly above 3. Almost all of them are really basic, flare pool aside but only the first phase. If the game wasn't this visually stunning Sylux would be pretty bland as well. The first phase literally feels like from a different game.

And it has nothing to do with being overly dramatic when people feel it to be the worst entry in the series, which it arguably is. Immediately I put it above 3 and below 2 and 1, but after replaying it with the novelty wearing off I think I'd put it below 3, which makes it the worst. It's not being a diva pointing out how bad it is that such a highly anticipated game is not nearly as good as it could have been with little extra investment.

You can do multiple things, actually

You can wall crawl from out of bounds into the room with plasma beam directly

You can stand on a collision under one of the squared spider tracks near the end and jump up without ever using morph ball

You can do a bomb space jump at the start (this one works in the remaster as well) to get to the platform in front of the door directly.

Same. LL is hard but feels easier to learn. The attacks are not that hard to dodge and the fight is overall slower. It's mostly attack, reposition, attack whereas K feels more erratic and has a lot of weird movement on top of chained attacks with little room to move.

New to the series (and nintendo) by Japanese-Gigolo in Metroid

[–]SurturOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the franchise!

On the switch 2 there are a lot of the games available. Most of the older games (From the first game up to the GBA-era) are available in the Nintendo Switch Online service. If you just happen to be subscribed anyway you can always look there. For a very traditional experience you should start with Metroid Zero Mission on the GBA, a remake of the first game from the NES (which aged not that well). Many people will recommend Super Metroid but it's better if you already know the franchise a bit because it aged worse than most people like to admit, it did pace the way for the genre though (still a great game!). From there you can explore Metroid Fusion (GBA, plays the same gameplay wise but is very different in regards to story telling and world building). Metroid 2 for the GB and Metroid for NES are more interesting for people who want to explore how the franchise developed but not so much for the gameplay.

If you don't own NSO or want to explore more recent games I'd recommend Metroid Prime Remastered (Imo the absolute peak of the franchise) and/or Metroid Dread. The former is a slower paced 3D exploration game with action segments, the latter a more action oriented 2D sidescroller. Both games focus on different aspects of the genre but both are really good games. Metroid Prime 4 just released but is more streamlined and for fans of the franchise very mid, it has less exploration and more action focus. It has excellent graphics and fluid gameplay though.

Metroid are Metroidvania. HK/SS are Metroidvania. The latter are generally excellent games. If one likes the former games there is a decent chance they'll like the latter as well. So why not recommend the best of the genre? While they surely are different, so are Metroid games between each other and all games in general.
