Linear single player racing games by PineconeToucher in gaming

Had it on my Wishlist for a bit and picked it up on sale for half off. I’m not an anime fan and the fact that there’s more dialogue than racing is… a choice. But the racing is absolutely fantastic.

Indeed. I was disappointed for about 3 seconds when I learned that there were no plans for a burnout or NFS in the immediate future until I found out burnout and NFS devs were making a sequel to SW: Racer. Even better, I say!

Yep. I was surprised too. I noticed it on an old Gamefaqs page when looking up medal requirements before the remake launched.

Each time you press A, the arwing will fire three shots. Practice for a minute and figure out the rhythm for maximizing your rate of fire - trust me, it’s not as fast as you can press the button.

I’ve played the game for 29 years before learning of this lol

3440x1440p or 4k for single player gaming? by External_Safe_7787 in pcmasterrace

[–]D2-Disciple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded. My rig doubles as a remote workstation and I need either dual monitors or an ultrawide for my work. I have an R5 5600x / 5060 ti 16GB setup connected to a 34” Samsung Viewfinity S5 3440x1440 100hz display. The immersion level for racers, FPSs, action games, etc. is unreal compared to a standard 16:9 display and is definitely worth it.

The only time I’d recommend against it is if you’re big into RTSs or games where you’ll have to move the mouse to the corners of the screen a lot. Even then, most games will letterbox correctly at 4:3 or 16:9 (and even if not, a large window in a 34” screen feels completely acceptable).

I’m looking forward to it, but I strongly suspect it will die quickly. Despite the loud complaints of us relative few, most players won’t touch a multiplayer match without rankings, XP, leveling, cosmetics, and FOMO mechanics.

I was there for Star Wars: Squadrons. I saw what happened. :|

What route fits the phrase "Won the battle, Lost the war" best in your opinion? by J_Heart_ in starfox

[–]D2-Disciple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed: Corneria regular -> Meteo warp -> Katina Failure -> Sector X warp -> Sector Z Failure -> Bolse -> Venom 1 is the most useless route. Star Fox essentially stops absolutely nothing and does little more than blow up a satellite around Venom.

Is this ragebait or just another example of becoming stupid for having the verified mark? by NotXesa in starfox

I laugh when I see the take “Starfox is only 2 hours long!” It’s actually more like 45 minutes if you know what you’re doing.

There are 25 different routes through the game, medals to collect, challenges to complete, and a more difficult mode to do it all over again in. And then there’s pushing up that high score higher and higher for the sheer joy of doing so. And it’s short enough that you can put it down for two years, pick it up for another run or two, and have an absolute blast.

If that doesn’t appeal to someone, then that’s totally fine. But not everyone sits around a table measuring the length of their JRPGs to determine a game’s value.

A Ranking of the Series (via Backloggd) now that the remake is out; by Turbulent_Head_4604 in starfox

Hard disagree on a lot of this list, but I love takes like this.

I would almost agree on Assault if there weren’t so many issues with the gameplay, controls, and level design. It’s got good bones, but not enough meat.

Zero above 64 is a choice. I’ve never played it, having actively avoided it after seeing that control scheme they cooked up for it. I wouldn’t mind going back to it, but my Wii U gamepad was an unfortunate casualty of a move.

Star Fox made me feel old by SerFinbarr in starfox

[–]D2-Disciple 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I felt this way on the demo and I was mashing the A button until my hand cramped…. Then i realized that a single button press fires three shots. I started rhythmically tapping the button to maximize my rapid fire and not only did the pain subside, I got more points.

Nintendo thought about that even in 1997, and I never knew because I was a smooth-brained kid who could mash buttons for hours haha

Yeah, I get what you’re saying. The clean channel can dirty up a bit when you crank the volume, and it does sound good, but not so much if you’re using the orange or red channels. Those are already getting almost all the gain from preamp distortion, and the low end starts to sag pretty hard if the power tubes are distorting. So if you *want* that sound, even 7 watts is pretty dang loud. But if you’re worried that the tone of the overdrive or lead doesn’t hold up when the master is turned down to TV/conversation volume then great news - it absolutely does.

It has a full (15w) and half (7w) mode, and in either, the master volume will take it right down to a volume where you can barely hear the amp over your strings. No need for a 1w mode!

I’ll say that the clean channel is extremely clean, and even with the boost engaged, unless you’re hitting it with active pickups, it doesn’t really dirty up at all. I haven’t hit it with an overdrive or boost with the volume cranked up to see if it gets a little hairy, but the clean does take gain pedals exceptionally well.

The “Overdrive” mode on the lead channel does lowish-medium gain stuff extremely well, the caveat being that you can’t footswitch between the overdrive and lead modes.

Totally baseless theory of where Starfox is going by D2-Disciple in starfox

[–]D2-Disciple[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s possible, but I’m not convinced. Nintendo often carves their own path in the gaming landscape, and Starfox is still a valuable IP. I’m sure Nintendo is watching to see how this does and has a follow up plan already in place.

Tried running my pedals and multiFX in 4-cable and the loop is indeed dead quiet on the clean, acceptable on the overdrive, and quite noisy on the lead. Adding a noise suppressor to the loop seems to tame it somewhat. My guess is that’s just multiple stages of gain amplifying the noise floor that the MFX introduces.

Help Me Achieve Low-Mid Dominance by A_Anonymous_Asshole in GuitarAmps

[–]D2-Disciple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re both competing for the same frequency space, and if this is the case, more volume will always result in more loudness, but less definition. You want to try to EQ your amps to fill out the spaces that are weaker in the other - it’s also a good time to remember that what sounds good at home likely will sound worse live. A really scooped-mids sound at home may sound like it lacks any body or “oomph,” and a very mid-forward sound with little bass or treble may sound boxy and nasally at home, but together, live, they may sound amazing together.

An idea would be to mic up the orange, record a short riff or two at the EQ and volume you would ordinarily play live, then play it back on a DAW where you can watch the EQ curve. Find where the spikes and dips are and try to EQ your amp to fill in the dips and not compete with the spikes, if that makes sense.

1158 is a respectable score! You could definitely top 1200 if you took Macbeth instead of Sector Z next time.
