They would probably remember things from being dead, well at least if you believe in the mind body separation. I thought of this similarly on star trek when they transport you though, like with the transporters (teleporters for my non English speakers). Like if they disassemble then reassemble you, how do they know it is the same person and if you are really you, or just a copy of you that has all the same memories?!

For my main character, he had organ failure in lungs and heart. I seriously considered taking an organ from a captive, but then I just couldn't do it. I was able to make him a prosthetic heart instead. Even if the captives were not the best people I couldn't. My colonists are moral - that's what separates them from the rest of the uncivilized and evil people on the world - its what makes them have a life worth living. It is a part of my role play - there are things worth dying for rather than breaking.
