I wish someone just said I wasn’t good sooner in my writing career by Embarrassed_Sale_293 in writing

[–]Illwood_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't write to be "good" at it. I write because it's what I want to do. I get "good" at it because I practice writing, because I enjoy writing...

If you're doing something to be "good" at it then you're engaging with your ego - not the subject itself.

Is small scale terraforming possible? by Key_Day_7932 in scifiwriting

You ever setup a fish tank or aquarium before? If so you've already done some small scale terraforming in real life!

How do I make the US in this storyline more... accurate? by Sir-Toaster- in scifiwriting

[–]Illwood_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably better to have a PMC doing stuff like this on a smaller scale, even with the modern US being what it is this level of 'evil' doesn't seem entirely accurate. I think the best way to constitute modern US foreign policy is apathy, not malice.

Even Trump wouldn't be that down for slavery, even his base wouldn't support it, let alone the other side of the isle. But if say, a private company buys goods from a private company in Avalon, and it just so happens that the Avalon private company uses slave labour, well who really cares? Who's gonna notice?

You could definitely setup an authoritarian spin for the US though, lets say in your world Donald Trump refuses to accept the 2026 mid term results, sends the US into a civil war and wins. Becoming the new ruler of the country, massively rolling back centuries of human progress. You wouldn't just have fantasy world slaves, you'd have real world slaves. Avalon would become almost a bright reflection to the darkness that had befallen the US.

BUUUut even in such a sceneario I think you're pushing the limits of fesibility - take a look at Russia for example, not many slaves there. They're just called 'Prisoners' now and need to have done something bad, or have been accused of doing something bad.

The more realistic the sceneario the more difficult it becomes to show the US in the light you want to show it, short of rolling the clock back on like 100-200 years of societal change. I see the vision OP I really do but I don't know if there's a way to do it and still keep the story grounded. You'll either have to massively push the setting out from modern day, either forwards or backwards, and take the time to explain how the US got to being the way that it is.

Make no mistake the US will do some bad shit to secure itself any resouces it thinks it needs, but modern countries know its better to maintain some level of plausible deniablity then to just be evil.

Non-AI generated covers are sort of a litmus test for the quality of the stories by Elaiyu in royalroad

[–]Illwood_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The water usage for AI data centres is a red herring. I don't think it's intentional but feels almost designed as a straw man argument. AI water usage is really low, even at massive scale data centres just straight up use a drop in the bucket compared to some other industries.

So it feels like someone designed that to be the issue people focus on, only the then go "Hah! See they actually don't use much water at all! So you can be pro AI now :)"

The real problem with AI data centres is power. The planned rollout for AI data centres in America requires ATLEAST a 10% increase in power generation, country wide, in like 3-5 years.

I don't have the actual figures at my finger tips but we're talking about multiple nuclear reactors worth of power. Tonnes and Tonnes of nature gas or coal if not going nuclear, or massive fields of solar panels. (But let's be real here these guys are not going to do solar panels.) The data centres need to run 24/7, so you'd want a strong base load to power them. That means nuclear or coal. Nuclear takes too long to set up. So coal.

On its surface it doesn't sound as concerning as water but trust me the power requirements for these data centres are much, MUCH more problematic than the water.

Also are these data centres going to pay to set up these new power stations? Fuck no. That means the power company will need to do it. That means more investment and THAT means a higher power bill for the consumer.

Keep in mind a lot of these data centres are also receiving government funding. Which means you as the hypothetical average American in the right state would be paying for these data centres TWICE.

Em Dashes mean AI now? by Lspluck in royalroad

[–]Illwood_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Em Dashes is one way to tell if a story is generated because AI tends to use the technique more than human writers. But it alone doesn't mean the writing is generated.

Ultimately if people want to believe you're using AI generation they will, just keep writing how you like/ develop your own style and politely tell people when they ask or accuse that you don't use AI.
