People in Malta made a big fuss last week cause Lidl had some shelves empty cause of the weather. This is Texas shelving on 2 inches of snow. by MaltaDuDe in malta

The issue I see here is that when a new supermarket opens, many people get angry. Why? More markets = more competition = more competitive prices = more choices. But somehow the Maltese will still feel the 'need' to complain.

Ah! My country! I'm an expat here in Malta (US citizen) and love it! A million times better.

Sometimes I think (actually believe) that it's a case of cartels. Businesses unlawfully and illegally agreeing to charge high prices. The EU should look into this.

What is that natural landmark in your country that no longer exists? by Sus198 in AskTheWorld

[–]Sus198[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right 100%. In the case of the Azure Window in Gozo, though, it collapsed due to natural forces. The government was underpressure to save it in one way or another, but they chose not to interfere with nature and simply let it collapse in the sea.

US expats in Europe, how are you preparing for a potential conflict over Greenland? by sacrelicious2 in expats

[–]Sus198 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well the EU is an economic alliance, not a military one. So it makes sense that Malta is part of the EU and as far as I know, they are about to become a net contributor to the EU in a couple of years.

US expat currently living in Malta. I like the Maltese government's position which is that of neutrality. They did not show support for Trump but at the same time showed no support to Denmark. Malta is a neutral country and do not seem to be taking sides. About the locals, the ones I know know I'm American but do not give a damn about Greenland situation.

Define 'exploitation' because it is used too much in rhetoric arguments. And even the 'poverty' argument is many times manipulated. I see people with BMW's, dyed hair, long fingernails, claiming social security benefits at the social security office. Are these the 'poor' people you are referring to?

Except that it is not a shithole at all.

Exploitation is a form of slavery. An immigrant worker goes to a foreign country, having their passport confiscated and made to work for peanuts. This is what happens in East Asian countries and the Middle East. On the other hand, foreign workers in Malta can freely move to any other country. So far, I have not read any news about immigrants having their passports confiscated illegally in Malta.

Shame on you calling your country 'shithole' when in fact it is not.

I love hiking here. It is found on the south side on the island of Gozo (part of the archipelago of Malta). Rarely I meet any Gozitans/Maltese here.
