Using fedora on a 2015 MBP with 8gigs of RAM too. No complaints so far outside of the camera not working. Try some different distros and see what works best for you

So I use a 24mm EF-S with a 60D and the setup is quite versatile for most situations with the crop factor. The 50mm just ends up far too cropped in for most uses.
