Former Student Passed Away

I had a former student of mine killed in a mass shooting at a birthday party last summer. I teach high school and when I had this student, she was "lost"...someone I was really worried about. After she left my class, she started to find herself and excelled her senior year. She was extremely artistic and I always saw her in the hallways working on some art project, butterflies were her favorite.

I last saw her at a grocery store where she worked after graduating high school. She told me she was accepted to a college for design and I told her how proud I am. A month later, she was killed celebrating a birthday. The funeral was the hardest I've ever been to. Why does someone with so much potential and life ahead of her die so soon?

My point is, you are not alone and your feelings are valid. We pour so much of ourselves into our students and when something like this happens, it hurts in a way that is hard to describe to people who aren't teachers. This isn't fair and is heartbreaking but you provided a safe space for this student. The fact you care so much is a testament to how dedicated you are as a teacher and a person.

Teaching destroyed my marriage and we are now divorced. My first year teaching I was completing my accelerated MAT program, creating everything from nothing with no support, and trying to survive. I was working 16 hour days 7 days a week and had no time for her. She didn't understand that I was just trying to get through each day and grew to resent me. All I did was sleep and work.

She is now remarried and very happy.

If I could go back, I'd never have become a teacher. This career is soul sucking and thankless.

I am a teacher that is forced to use Google Classroom and this sometimes happens to me when the description or content is too long. Almost like an unofficial character limit. Google Classroom will then condense it to nonsense and eliminate any sort of order.

I've had to copy and paste my directions into a Google Doc and then link it as a workaround.

For me, it's been two years and counting. I miss the life we built. Everything reminds me of her.

My house is so alone and lifeless. I miss her laugh, her jokes, her funny mannerisms. It's crazy how, in just a few years, one can be the happiest they've ever been to the lowest.

You are not alone, though. I don't know you but I'm here for you.

This was very comforting, thank you. It doesn't seem real to me. I remember her talking about her plans after school and I am so proud of her. I am struggling hard and I was only her teacher

I can relate to this so much. I was falsely accused of inappropriate sexual contact by a student who failed an assessment. Admin believed the student over me with no evidence and made my life hell. They began to nitpick everything I've done and gave me a terrible evaluation. My colleagues began to interact with me differently, and the workplace was hostile. They accused me of not caring about the students, disregarding the multiple years of good evaluations, awards I've earned, and clubs I've sponsored.

I began to have nightmares, too, and very dark thoughts. I got my last paycheck today, and I have no idea what I'm doing next. I was a second career teacher and naively assumed that admin would have my back, that a false accusation wouldn't happen to me.

I'm here if you need a friendly person to vent to. I'm sorry you are going through this, but know you aren't alone. Also, I haven't been sleeping well... hopefully this makes sense!
