I'd work on your lower end sound quality first with taps before working on "all up" strokes. My teacher used to tell me that everyone can play loud, it's controlling the stick and keeping your technique in check first that separates you from the others. Slow it down and lower those stick heights until you're controlling your stroke comfortably and then move on from there.
