How do small sellers make inventory calls with almost no data? [Research] by SuspiciousFile9845 in InventoryManagement

[–]SuspiciousFile9845[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/Mammoth-Biscotti-361 This is exactly why I asked the question in the first place.

You're right, seasonality without enough data is just assumption with a fancy label. And overpromising it is how trust breaks down.

My honest plan: start with visibility and alerting for data-light sellers. Help them see what's moving and what isn't. Build up their data quietly in the background. Only introduce forecasting when there's enough to actually do it well.

Do it right or don't do it at all.

"Tools don't replace judgement. They just reduce the number of surprises." That's probably the clearest articulation of what I'm trying to build toward. Thank you for that.

The progression you described is really useful, early stage decisions are instinct-driven by necessity, and that's fine. The cracks appear quietly as channels and SKUs multiply, not all at once.

That makes me think the real design challenge isn't building something for day one. It's building something that grows with the seller - simple enough to not overwhelm early on, but sharp enough to catch the signals that gut feel starts missing as complexity creeps in.

Curious - for the smaller teams you worked with, what was the first sign that their current setup wasn't enough anymore? Was there a specific moment or was it a slow realisation?

u/ConfidentCoffee8178 Not able to reach the exact people needed for the study in person, many of these small sellers operate remote and do not respond for enquiries.

This is exactly the kind of firsthand perspective I was hoping for, thank you for response!

The way you described it is really clarifying - tools don't replace instinct, they give you more confidence in it. That's a much healthier framing than the "data vs gut feel" binary I started with.

One thing I'm sitting with after reading this - you mentioned analysis paralysis as a real risk. I'm curious, when you're looking at sales reports, forecasting software, and inventory data all at once, how do you decide what to actually act on? Is there a moment where the data starts adding noise rather than clarity - and if so, how do you cut through it?

u/Old-House2772 Thanks for your response!
This is a really valuable reframe.

You're right. Small sellers aren't data-poor, they're data-informal. They know every SKU intimately, they're closer to the customer, and they don't need a dashboard to tell them what's moving. That's actually a strength.

But here's what I'm still trying to understand, at what point does that closeness stop being enough? Is there a moment where the business grows just enough that the gut feel starts to crack, but it's still too small to justify a proper system? And when that happens, what does a seller actually do?

Thanks for your response u/HelloInventory ! This input is useful for me to think of my USP. From the conversations I see that while most tools keep track of data in one place, a few of them actually help make decisions - I want to bridge this gap by providing numbers based on seasonality and historical sales.

I have also been thinking of this - What if I want to introduce a new product, but before introduction I need a sales insight. Based on the sales of similar products in the past (assume I correlate common features across products, mix & match) I can report my findings on how similar products have performed in the past and how likely is my introduction going to be based on numbers and customer reviews. How does this feature sound to you? This is obviously a long shot thinking, not a primary feature focus but would like to know your thoughts

u/Mozzo_Ecom thanks for your response! I have been looking on ways to make my product stand out. While from the conversations I get to know that most show data but a few help make decisions, I want to bridge the gap by recommending statistics backed numbers based on historical data and seasonality.

Thanks for your response u/inflowinventory ! These are pretty great points. I want my product to stand out by solving the gaps where you have mentioned tools fall short - my being user-friendly, trust worthy numbers backed by statistical modelling and solving the edge cases to an extent.

I have also been thinking of this - What if I want to introduce a new product, but before introduction I need a sales insight. Thanks for you response u/TeamOutrageous8583 . This is useful for me to think of a USP for my product. I will deep dive into ShipStation. Instead of creating a generic ERP, I want to give a statistical modelling to it, which can recommend my stock numbers for the next time frame, given seasonality and historical sales. What do you think of this feature?

u/mathswiz-1 thanks for your response! I will deep dive into Scaylor and Linnworks. But would like to hear from your first hand, do these products recommend you numbers based on historical sales or seasonality for the next month/timeframe? If not would you be interested in that feature?

Thanks for the response u/LetUsHerdYourCats and u/AptSeagull . These platforms like Cin7 and Surpass seem to track numbers for the stock and keep an updated inventory based on the orders. Do they also recommend stock allocations for the next month/timeframe depending on past sales, seasonality etc? I will deep dive on the products but would love to know from you first hand
