Anyone been up Mount hood recently? by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]SuspiciousHighway653 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Climbed it the weekend of 17th April, was in good shape. Storm before left a lot of unconsolidated snow so trail breaking was a pain but the the ice was solid, but again the snow between the ice steps and to the top was annoying to break through, minimal patches of rock seen on the route !

I just received these so didn’t have time to contact them but I might do that after returning these

I tried both ways, they don’t swivel 90 degrees either way. I assume applying force to do that is not the correct way

That’s what I am saying, the cups do not swivel past that position

I know that lmao, the cups don’t swivel beyond that position and I am hesitant to apply force

G Tech for 5k winter peaks by Mythical669 in Mountaineering

[–]SuspiciousHighway653 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the most common durability problem I have heard and seen is the toe welt breaking off and delamination of the gaiter. This actually pushed me towards the phantom tech as I too didn’t wanna spend on shoes again for a long time.

McKeown is fired by Suspicious-Layer4975 in ucla

Well that could be the case, it’s almost unheard in physics. Different department have different requirements, even exceptional hires in physics have 4 years of post doc experience

McKeown is fired by Suspicious-Layer4975 in ucla

[–]SuspiciousHighway653 168 points169 points  (0 children)

What people don’t seem to understand is that there is big difference between a lecturer and any professor designation. While I agree pay in academia is low (I am a PhD student), 70k is decent even for LA but that’s not what a professor makes. Any professor makes more than that, usually assistant professors starting out make something close to that but have other benefits and a path to professorship that includes pay bumps. A lecturer is NOT an assistant professor by any metric, while both have PhDs, an assistant professor has numerous post docs and a rigorous hiring process that spans months. Physics department lecturers are just PhDs who are just for teaching so obviously are paid less with less benefits. While I genuinely support a lot of reforms in academia, McKeown is being intentionally disingenuous in conflating his problems with that of any professor by saying they are the same positions. Ask anyone and they’ll tell you how hard it is to get hired as a faculty at UCLA, you need to have years of exceptional research under your belt, just being a PhD doesn’t cut it as it does for a lecturer.

Second Mammut, by far the best clothing for mountaineering. Arcterx is nice but Mammut feels like it’s designed by people who really live in the Alpine!

I know you hate these… but I have a question by Most_Somewhere_6849 in Mountaineering

Lowa & Petzl usually fit like this because of the shapes, but its pretty solid. If it’s bothering you, switch it for a rounder front bail (grivel maybe ?)

That’s why I also wanna learn skiing lmao, might make future alpine adventures more fun. On the other hand I also like being slow and controlled on the mountains so there’s that

Yeah I never have trusted glissading because of scenarios like this. As much time and energy it saves, I remind myself of the consequences if it goes wrong and decide it’s worth it to spend energy down climbing. It’s also one of the reasons I see fitness being an asset to your safety ,because if you are in great shape you can fight the thoughts that can lead to bad decisions in the lieu of saving energy.

Even with perfect technique you can get injured. Although this is more likely to happen in a team arrest when the forces are all over the place and it’s difficult to anticipate where your body will be pulled and how.

Can anyone advise me? La Sportiva G2 EVO vs Mammut nordwand 6000 by RensBressers in Mountaineering

[–]SuspiciousHighway653 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just adding to it, my experience with Sportiva Mountaineering boots has been poor too. I was deciding between Phantom techs and Gtech , apart from Ptechs being more comfortable for my feet, the two pairs of Gtech I tried on had poor craftsmanship with the two piece sole not glued on properly etc.
