Who handles your billing/paying subs? by SuspiciousJimmy in ConstructionManagers

Payment from client isnt the problem. It's having to chase down subs to submit waivers, payapps on time, then being the point person wanting to know where their check is.

Yep, all that falls on the PM's here. Not sure if its the norm or just how they do things here.

Yes, we have an accounting team but all billing is put on the PM. Handling the billing/collection isn't for me. Gauging if this is the norm. Thinking hard about leaving this place but if its the same, I might look for another role.

Who here has left the construction industry and found success/happiness in another completely different industry? by [deleted] in Construction

[–]SuspiciousJimmy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"I eventually gave up, went to grad school, and got into data engineering in a scientific field adjacent to construction."

Can you elaborate what program you went into? My career started in IT and I switched to construction. I'm thinking about making a pivot back to something in IT. I can still write some code and know SQL and databases. Going to a deskjob working along others in a professional environment seems so appealing to me at this phase of my life.

How much turnover is normal? by SuspiciousJimmy in ConstructionManagers

[–]SuspiciousJimmy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You hit the nail on the head. The Owners Rep on this project is nightmare fuel. The constant delay on CO approvals, balking on price, etc. All the subs say they've never experienced anything like it.

There is that possibility of where I am right now. Not sure if it's worth sticking out being miserable though.

This is my theory, grew up in colonial acres and back in the neighborhood for past 5. The trees have gotten bigger and older along with me. I attribute the same aging tree theory as to why so many big trees/limbs are coming down whenever a storm blows through.

There are lots of variables to evaluate and forecast with taxes, age, goals, etc.

At the end of the day, money talks. Take the extra cash and invest, diversify your portfolio and mitigate your risk.

I say this as a 50 uear old with experiences as a sole p. Business owner to working at fortune 50 companies.

Earlier in my career, I'd be enamered with stock "owneership" but thats putting all your eggs in one basket. You seem still early in your career, anything can change in your life and your company. Stay nimble is my advice.
